Guest MarkSolly Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I'm in the dog box at the moment and need some help getting out. I recently downloaded a few months worth of XP updates. These somehow managed to corrupt Norton Internet Security to the point where my computer would basically just freeze anytime Norton activated to scan something. I tried to uninstall Norton - have used add/remove, the norton uninstall tool, had three diff't people from Norton tech support unsuccessfully try to fix this too - all to no avail. The problem now is that any time I open a MS Word or Excel file, a message comes up at the bottom left of screen "requesting virus scan". But Norton is corrupted and basically gone, so the PC hangs for a few minutes while it looks for the file. How do I redirect office apps to AVG (new anti virus I downloaded). I've tried reinstalling office as well which didn't help. Mark
Guest Bob I Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict The problem is that Norton installation. If you can't get into it to disable the "Office Plugin" you will need to visit Symantec website to get the uninstaller. It isn't a Windows XP or Office issue, it's a problem you need to correct throught the use of the norton uninstall utility. Guest JS Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict You could try using FileMon for Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Filemon.mspx After you open FileMon let it run for a short while, then set the filters to ignore the background activity. Next open MS Word (don't open a document) and again add filters to ignore most of the activity when Word first opens. Now you can clear FileMon's display (Ctrl+x), open a document and while Word is stalled out (the PC hangs) then use the 'Capture' (Ctrl+e) option in FileMon to grab the activity. Next inspect the Path information display in FileMon to see if Norton is still involved in the process of opening a document. Guest MarkSolly Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict Thanks, JS. I've not used this before and it was pretty interesting. I followed your instructions. There seem to be a few things going on. When the document first opens, Word accesses AVG files which are fine. See below under my heading GROUP ONE. These processes are completed in less than one second. Then word pokes around - lots of processes, but again, only takes less than one second. See the reference below under GROUP TWO Then we get to what I think is the culprit. This bad boy below is the process that keeps coming up that takes a few minutes to clear. This appears multiple times. 5:50:46 PM WINWORD.EXE:3504 QUERY INFORMATION C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSet.dll SUCCESS Attributes: A So having done all that, how do I get rid of this #@!! file. Guest JS Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict So FileMon did find the culprit. There is a removal tool on Symantec's web site. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 If you have already done the above and as it appears there are some pieces of Norton still on your system let me know and we will take the next step or steps. Guest JS Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict Most likely there are still some Services that are/where part of the product that are still running which could explain why the DLL files can't be deleted. Example: C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe which is the Live Update Scheduler service. To find out what if any Symantec services are still running click Start/Run and enter: services.msc Right click on a service and select properties to see if any belong to that Symantec product. Guest JS Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: Norton - Office XP conflict I almost forgot, there also could be some processes that are still running which could also explain why you can't delete the DLL files. Since you deleted most of the Symantec files try deleting them again the next time you boot. If they still will not delete then there are two tools that may help resolve the problem.
