Guest Serhan Ogan Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Hi, my wireless modem is 20 feet away, there are no obstacles or digital interference (that I know of) in the way. My laptop (Toshiba A-10 Satellite) is running almost 24/7. Everyday at least once, my connection drops. Annoying...., anyway, XP locates my modem and network,(Signal strenght: Excellent, means nothing when you can not ride that signal) and lists it among other wireless networks it picks. It tries to connect automaticaly and sometime does. Usually I have to click CONNECT and after 6-7 trials get it to work again. Laptop connects to the best network immediately, anywhere else. (Meant to be mobile or what?) The computer does indeed connect to a very weak unsecured network, deep down in the "priority list". I did check the list and even delete that far away network just to see it coming back minutes later. This problem sometimes last 2-3 hours. It does say Acquiring network address When the connection drops I do; Hit repair. Restart, Turn the wireless adapter on-off. Unplug the wireless modem for 5 minutes etc. Wireless Modem: US Robotics 54Mbps ADSL Router PC : Toshiba A 10 XP SP2 Centrino

Guest R. McCarty Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Re: Unstable Wireless Connection Most Wireless setups default to Radio Channel #6. You might want to login to the Router and switch to an alternate channel. Usually this is effective when you have multiple Wireless networks (SSIDs) found in your area. Be sure that every suggestion has been taken into consideration. The Pc is well maintained and clean, but switching the channels may help. We'll see. Give me a 48. Best Serhan

Changing channels did not work either. Could not connect for an hour. I also realized that when I take the laptop and go next to the modem it does connect. Wonder if the modem is all right. Is it possible to run diognostics on a wireless modem? Thanks.
