Paging e rallentamenti

Recommended Posts

Il mio PC XP SP2 si è messo a rallentare sensibilmente e presenta

prestazioni sensibilmente abnormi visibili in http://i21.tinypic.com/vr563c..jpg

e a GoogleDesktop.exe si possono attribuire i picchi fino al 73% di

utilizzo della CPU.

Il mio PC è ben descritto da Microsoft System Information

http://i23.tinypic.com/34nl5iu.jpg

Mi stupisce il fatto che, avviando un programma oneroso tipo Photoshop

elements 4.0, la CPU vada spesso in saturazione (al 100%) come si

vede in http://i23.tinypic.com/29z5yit.jpg

ma l'utilizzo del file di paging resti praticamente invariato.

In tale momento potete vedere applicazioni e processi in

http://i22.tinypic.com/3502dt1.jpg e http://i20.tinypic.com/296c903.jpg.

Qualcuno può darmi una spiegazione e magari un hint per migliorare la

situazione?

I knew I could rely on you for an excellent Italian translation,

even though the last one was in Spanish. Any more to come?

BTW, can you say "molto più meglio"? I tought this was a

double-dip.

Sorry! There is a similar italian newsgroup and I tought it was the

one I was sending may question.

Now I am training to make a translation, so may be somebody can help

me.

I will not translate also what in the jpeg files unless somebody will

ask me about specifically...

My PC XP SP2 is slowing down and show up a unusual low performance as

in http://i21.tinypic.com/vr563c.jpg

and to GoogleDesktop.exe I impute the peaks up to the 73% of the CPU

utilization.

My PC is well described from Microsoft System Information

http://i23.tinypic.com/34nl5iu.jpg

As I start an havy program as Photoshop

elements 4.0, the CPU become saturated as you can see in

http://i23.tinypic.com/29z5yit.jpg

and I am confused about the fact that the paging file remain almost

unaltered.

At that moment http://i22.tinypic.com/3502dt1.jpg e http://i20.tinypic.com/296c903.jpg

show applications and processes.

Anybody can explain me about and, may be, hint me a solution to

improve the situation?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

What version of Zone Alarm are you using?

Is your computer always on or do you turn it off after using it?

Photographic programs often have an Undo feature and this does place big

demands on memory.

How large is your hard disk and how much free disk space?

You fooled me! I thought you knew Italian. I'm far from fluent, but I

know a little Italian, so I figured that since I could understand what

you wrote, it had to be near perfect.

Agree, but this is not the case: the Adobe program was open but not

used.

I have two internal disks (142GB, 36GB free) and an external one

(64GB, 13GB free) .

Thank you Gerry for answer me; any idea about the paging file being

almost flat?

Re: Paging and slowing down

Re: Paging and slowing down

In Task Manager click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is

the Total, the Limit and the Peak when you have been editing with

Photoshop Elements 4?

Does Photoshop Elements 4 release memory when it remains open?

You might do better not to leave the computer on overnight.

What do you mean by the paging file being almost flat?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and

click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents

Folder and post a copy.

In Task Manager click the Performance Tab and you see the history of

the paging file usage: I mean that I am surprised by the fact that, in

any circumstance, there is pratically no variation in the diagram.

I succeded with three disks but now for the remaining disk XP is

asking to chkdsk /f before. I will privide asw soon as I can restart.

Now the reports, hoping you can understand, maybe using Microsoft

The size of your pagefile is very large. I am not sure what the

implications of this might be.

"Utilizzo Memoria" is a misleading description. It is an allocation of

virtual memory to a programme and not usage.

http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage. Start it to run

immediately after start-up and look at the log. Pagefilemon takes

snapshots. You need to run it at the beginning of the session at then

run it again at intervals throughout the sessions. The log is Pagefile

log.txt. If you right click on the file in Windows Explorer and select

Send to, Desktop (Create Shortcut). The same applies to

XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Note programs using undo features, particularly those associated with

graphics and photo editing, require large amounts of memory so if you

use this type of programme check these first observing how the page

usage increases when they start and whether the usage decreases when you

close the programme.

>>

Is that because you have Photoshop Elements 4 load on booting the

computer or for some other reason?

http://www.bradford.ac.uk/lss/documentation/photoshop-elements-4/photoshop-elements-4.pdf

How would you describe your use of Photoshop Elements 4? Occasional,

often or all the time?

What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System log in

Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in

the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No

Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in

a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning

of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description

are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you

should double click for further information. You can copy using copy

and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further

information.

http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

The amount of free space at 14% is not enough. Files are badly

fragmented, which will not help performance.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore

on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700

mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System

Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this

time find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and

exit. When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and

exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to

Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also

select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,

More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System

Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Please post a further copy of the Disk Defragmenter Report after

carrying out these suggestions.

I reduced the total paging file size to 1.5 time the RAM, i.e. to

~1500MB an now results are

781MB, 2520MB, 931MB

Thank you for signaling such a good page!

Again thank you! This is a shot taken at start-up, as soon that the

icon connected ti pagefilemon became operating:

01/10/2007 18.51.28

Pagefile Physical Location: E:\pagefile.sys

Current Pagefile Usage: 80 MB

Session Peak Usage: 80 MB

Current Pagefile Size: 1534 MB

and after stabilization, with only Google Sidebar as hungry program in

operation:

01/10/2007 19.00.55

Pagefile Physical Location: E:\pagefile.sys

Current Pagefile Usage: 100 MB

Session Peak Usage: 100 MB

Current Pagefile Size: 1534 MB

Not so much! In this same section I started Photoshop Elements 4.0

with the following result as per havy us:

01/10/2007 19.09.21

Pagefile Physical Location: E:\pagefile.sys

Current Pagefile Usage: 104 MB

Session Peak Usage: 105 MB

Current Pagefile Size: 1534 MB

No errors.

I already provide for defragmenting the main drive.

Re: Paging and slowing down

Re: Paging and slowing down

What does the Disk Defragmenter Report look like after defragmenting? I

think the report was after Analyse but before defragmenting. You should

not have a list

"Frammenti Dimensioni file File maggiormente frammentati". If you

have a list after completing Defragmenting we need to find out why. To

get a Report before Defragmenting you click on Analyse and to defragment

you click on Defragment.

Hope this helps.
