Guest madmich Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Hi, need help, my son was playing a game on my pc and called me in to see that there was a blank screen with pink vertical lines through it. Can't get much info out of him as he is only 4. I did a restart by pressing the button on the front as I didn't know what else to do. Now getting a screen that says DEL:Setup F11:Boot Menu F12:Network Boot Cache Memory Error Press F1 to run SETUP Press F2 to load default values and continue I pressed F1 which took me into the BIOS setup screen, loaded the default BIOS settings, and saved and exited, then was faced with same screen...Cache memory error...etc. I then tried F2 which gave me same screen practically... DEL:Setup F11:Boot menu F12:Network menu Cache memory error Run SETUP Press F1 to resume I then press F1 and get a blank black screen with a tiny flashing horizontal line in the top right corner....and that's it ....nothing! Please help I am no tech expert and have no idea what this means -- This was supposed to be FUN!
Guest dobey Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Re: Cache memory error This is a hardware problem, which seems to indicate a cache memory error, which is on the CPU. Ask in a group that deals with your make/model of motherboard, or google for more info. You might try going into the BIOS again, (if you can get there), and disabling the cache. You will need to read the mobo manual to find this setting. If you don't have it you may be able to download it from the motherboard manufacturers website. If it does boot it will be slow. This could be a board problem also, but from the message it seems to indicate CPU. Is the CPU fan and heatsink attached properly? You will need to take the side of the case off to inspect. If the BIOS has a "PC health" menu, look at that to see what the readings are. Wouldn't hurt to check the RAM, but at this stage it's best to start from the CPU. Processors have a small amount of very fast memory, commonly referred as L1 or L2 cache, the error most likely means that this super fast memory isn't working properly. The processor may need to be replaced but that will have to be determined by a competent hardware technician. John
Guest madmich Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Re: Cache memory error Thanks John John, your answer was much more helpful than the other one I got, but it was as I feared, I hate to send my baby away. Well thanks again cheers -- This was supposed to be FUN! Guest John John Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Re: Cache memory error You're welcome. In this case you have little choice but to send the computer for repair. If you have sensitive information or valuable files on your hard disk think of your options for these files before you send the pc out for repairs! I have seen some computers go out for service only to come back with replaced hardware along with freshly formated drives and restored/reinstalled operating systems! Ask the tech support about this and if you have really important or valuable files it would be wise to pull the hard drive and mount it in another machine so that you can backup these files. This isn't hard to do, one of your friends or work colleagues may be able to do this for you. Better safe than sorry!
