Save As to Desktop takes foreever to respond

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

I have windows XP SP2, Intel 1.86 GhZ, 1.5 GB memory (and almost 10 GB

of free space in C:)

Im facing a strange problem with my corporate laptop for the past 4/5

months.

When ever I try to do a "Save as" from PDF, any of the MS Office XP

application, Notepad etc, and try to choose desktop location from the

Save as dialog box then my laptop takes a long time to respond (as

much as even 1 or 2 minutes or more)

I have deleted all my temporary files, cookies etc and still see no

increase in response time.

Can somebody suggest a resolution.

Do NOT want you to do a format and install. Go to start--all

programs --accessories--system tools---disk Clean-up.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarification egarding disk clean-up. I could remove

30MB of temp internet file space based on the same.

But, Im seeing the same performance issue.

Specifically, whenever I click on "SAVE as" from any application (Word/

Excel, Notepad, or even Non-Microsoft softwares)

a) then there is lot of delay in opening up the dialog box (here delay

is much more in Non-microsoft softwares)

b) After the dialog box opens up, if I use the left hand icon DESKTOP

(from "Recent", "Desktop" "My Documents" "My computer" "My network" )

then it takes a good 2/3 minutes to open up desktop locations

irrespective of whether it is MS software or Non-MS software (here

delay is same for both MS and non-MS)

c) If after I come to desktop, I navigate to some other location like

My computer and then again click on left-hand side icon for Desktop,

it again takes as much time as b)

What could be the cause?

I want to add 2 points:-

a) My desktop does NOT have too many files, folders and the biggest

size folder is just 236KB. Majority of items (23) I have is in form of

short-cuts to different folders in D: drive.

b) I dont see any performance issues while using Windows explorer to

navigate to desktop.

I located the source of the problem.

It is the many shortcut items which is causing delayed performance!!

I removed all the shortcuts (to different files, folders in D:) from

the desktop and put it within a sub-folder in desktop. This time SAVE

as opens up immediately across different applications!!

k, here is my next question. I have always refrained from keeping any

big files, folders on D: as one of my colleagues said that big sized

files will cause windows loading up etc to get delayed. Hence, I

started keeping shortcuts and more shortcuts to different excel/word

and other applications in desktop. But, now I come to learn that even

this will cause a performance degradation.

What is the solution to this? I would like to be able to quickly

access different important files and still be able to not be bogged

down with performance issue.

Re: Save As to Desktop takes foreever to respond

Try normal maintenance at least once a week. I.E. First run Disk Cleanup

then defrag.

As you already know, keep the number of shortcuts down.

Configure your machine to load the minimum number of programs on boot up.

I.E. Don't load them if you don't need them.

(Start--run--msconfig---OK--startup tab--Remove

X's from items not needed.)

Don't run programs in the background ---virus scanners and malware programs.
