Guest Brian Vaughan Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 For several weeks, every few reboots of my computer, Windows halts booting, with an error message, including the following: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\system" This error will not go away until I reboot from the Windows installation CD and use the recovery console. However, even if I do nothing but simply exit from the recovery console, Windows and all my applications will operate normally, and I can usually reboot a few times before I get the error again. Several web searches, including on this forum, lead me to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I thought the instructions implied a situation in which Windows cannot be booted normally. In my case, I could, so I tried restoring my registry to a restore point a few days before the first time I saw the problem. After about two days, however, the problem came back. I also noticed that Kaspersky Anti-Virus, following a complete system scan, reported that it could not scan one file because the file was corrupt. Frustratingly, it did not identify the file. Also, I ran "CHKDSK /r" from the recovery console, and it reported that my hard drive had unrecoverable errors, but didn't offer further details. I've tried the Windows graphic scandisk, which reported no errors, and a hardware diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer, which also reported no physical problems with my hard drive. I'm at a loss how to proceed.

What happens in these situations when you try to boot the PC off a floppy boot disk? Here is how you can make one: - Format a floppy disk. - Copy these hidden files from C:\ to A:\ - c:\ntldr c:\ntdetect.com c:\boot.ini
Guest db ´¯`·.. > Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Re: Intermittent booting problem since it appears the issue focus's on the registry, then it may either be corrupted, inflated and or fragmented. you can download pagedefrag by sysinternals from microsoft.com then set it to run at each boot. when it does it will defrag your registry hive before the desktop loads. another thing that would not hurt for you to try is microsoft's one care. although it is a system, the options to tune up the disk and the registry can be selected: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm -- db ·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·..><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º>¸. ><)))º>·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·.. ><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º> ..
