Product Key lost following reversion to windows 8

I have a HP all in one PC acquired in 2014 and experienced a range of issues following the free windows 10 upgrade. Following a 2nd crash of windows 10 I finally managed to revert back to original windows 8. Computer is requesting a product key which was apparently preset on the original motherboard and not supplied with PC documentation. I cannot access this through the PC. Microsoft is advising only assistance they can provide is to repurchase Microsoft Windows and retailer advised could not help. Looks like I will not be able to re-install windows 10 even if I find the original product key and would have to now pay for upgrade. Really don't like paying for a product twice. Anyone have any suggestions on how to recover product key.
