"New Simple Volume" missing in Disk Management Console

I have just created a new iSCSI target on a Synology NAS and can connect to this via the iSCSI initiator in. I can then initialize the disk in the Disk Management Console, but I cannot create a volume, because the "New Simple Volume" choice is not available for this disk. How can I add a simple volume to the iSCSI target?
