Monitor not recognized properly by Windows 7

Hi- I am running Windows 7 Professional. When I booted up this morning, my display settings were different- dropped back to a ridiculous 800 x 600 or something. The monitor itself keeps giving a pop up that says to change my screen resolution, but the monitor type is not recognized in the drop down under settings in Windows (just getting "generic"). So, I can't optimize the resolution and it looks like a fishbowl.

 

 

We have been recently hit by a rage of viruses and I'm worried I've got something we can't detect using Avast.

 

 

Any ideas/advice welcome!
