Issue:

Install WIA2.0 driver and connect to WSD scanner device in network through 'Add device'. Open MSPAINT application and execute scan. Following error occurred,

"An error occurred during preview. If another program is scanning, please wait for it to complete and select ""Preview again".

Client PC setup 1:

Windows 10 64bit Fresh OS, Firewall = ON, System network = Public

Above mentioned issue occurred on this environment.

Client PC Setup 2:

Windows 10 64bit Fresh OS, Firewall = ON, System network = Private

Above mentioned issue DO NOT OCCUR on this environment.

Analysis using network logs:

On investigating through network logs we found that, DPWS events from Scanner/MFP are blocked by Client PC Firewall. DPWS will send intermediate scan events which are not allowed by Firewall as 5357 port is blocked by default for in bound network traffic in Public network.

MFP retries sending scan events multiple times but failed for the same reason. Due to which Client side WIA service time out and hence sending RESET packet to MFP and close the connection.

Note that, in 'Private' network scanner events are reaching Client PC through 5357 port and scanning happened without any error.

Looks like OS has got different Firewall default settings for Public and Private networks. But as explained above, Client PC is failing to receive scan events on Public network due to Firewall default settings.

Isn't it the issue at OS side to block DPWS events in Public or Domain networks (allowed only in Private network)? Is there any standard workaround for this?

Note, as per Microsoft suggestion opening 5357 port on Public network has security vulnerabilities and hence this option is ruled out for workaround/solution.

Looking for your quick reply as it is very critical issue for us.
