Safe removal of USB devices doesn't work Win 10

After inserting a USB device on my desktop, the safe removal of the USB devices doesn't work properly when I try to remove it. When I click on the icon it just sits there, there is no indication to safely remove the USB device. If I connect my iPod, I get the same results. It won't let me know when it safe to remove anything that I have connected via USB port.

 

 

While I can disconnect safely, there is no indication that I can do so.

 

 

Any workable solution appreciated.
