Hi,

VM on Win 10 Pro - How to deal with viruses, malware etc

I am using Windows 10 Pro and I am also a complete newbie when it comes to VM. I would appreciate helpful comments from an experienced VM user.

I am thinking of reinstalling from scratch and then setting up my computer to work under a VM configuration, mainly to make it quick and easy to be able to restore earlier clean 'snapshots'? - and get back up and running asap.

Well that's my aim. But as I know nothing, I thought I'd check whether this is a useful way to go about it. I don't even know if I have to buy a VM app to be able to meet my aims, or whether the Win10 Pro can deal with everything.

Main questions

  1. Do/could I create a newly installed 'clean administrator' snapshot and then also create a 'day-to-day working administrator snapshot'. The idea being that the 'clean administrator' snapshot is the first, master install, and having done that I can go on to normally use the second 'day-to-day working' administrator snapshot?

  2. What happens if my 'day-to-day working' VM gets a virus - even nasties such as Petya? How can I cope with this situation - as I am thinking whether it might be able to copy information from one VM configuration to another, and then go on to delete the infected 'day-to-day working' VM (partition??) and reload it clean again.

  3. What happens if my initial 'clean administrator' VM gets a bad virus - again including the real nasties like Petya?

  4. I think that VM would help me in another area. And that is to reduce the amount of running programs within a VM configuration. For example create a VM with the accent on Video recording and editing, with another for Entertainment like iTunes, iPlayer etc, then another VMset up for general stuff like Word, and lastly a VM setup for Utilities such as backing up with Vice Versa Pro or Acronis.
Does that sound a good idea - or even possible?
  5. Finally, are there some really good videos or helpful web pages available? I am aware there are many, and thats the problem - sorting out the good from the bad advice.

Thanks in advance for any help.
