Microsoft Word (docx) does not always open when I double click on it

When I do not have any other Word documents open and double click on a Word document it will open. Occasionally when I have already opened one or more Word documents and then double click on another Word document in my files it will not open; instead one of the Word documents already open will come to the front. I have to close all the documents already open in order to get that document to open. Then I have to double click on each of the other documents to get them open at the same time. This is a nonsensical problem.
