Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads 1 2 3
by Guest BMillikan- 56 replies
- 3.9k views
I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE & ME. However, I have a ton of learning CDs for my 3-year-old and they are Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only (some of them). So, I need to be able to get the patches/updates for Win95-WinMe somehow. Can anyone point me in the right direction? problems with 32.dll when loading drivers 1 2
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 31 replies

'95 'group included as I use the '95 shell, via 98lite "Sleek" option. I recently had a play with soporific's UBCD, a. k. a. "Windows 98, 10th anniversary edition". I think a vast amount of work has gone into it, and when installed from scratch as I did on a laptop for a friend, it worked well (including the universal USB driver). However, as with many such things, trying to install over an existing system (even though it does include an option to do so) is more problematical. Anyway: I've finally got my original system back, due to use of some ERDs from before I tried it, with one exception (that I know so far, anyway): it initially manifested as t…

shift-delete not working the _first_ time
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 23 replies
- 2.1k views
I usually delete files (folders too) with shift-delete rather than delete; you know, so it says "are you sure you want to permanently delete" rather than "are you sure you want to ... recycle bin" (and with a different icon). Thing is, nearly always, it doesn't work first time: it usually comes up with the recycle bin prompt. To which I say no, then shift-delete again, and it comes up with the right one. It's only on this one machine, and I'm pretty certain it _isn't_ a dodgy shift key - my fingers move very little between the first attempt that fails and the second that succeeds. Any idea what's causing it? (I know I could change it - I know the…

Running 95B on a P166 system. Both Hotmail and GMail lock up the pc or at best take 10 to 15 min to load. I don't want to upgrade to 98SE (I have the oem software) because I don't run any anti-virus and have had _no problems. Need suggestions for a e-mail program. Don't need a 'client', just a simple program to send and receive mail. Regards......... -- -------------------- http://NewsReader.Com/ -------------------- Usenet Newsgroup Service $9.95/Month 30GB

Windows 95 and 98 on same PC?
by Guest rpgs rock dvds- 11 replies

Is it possible to have a PC (that has one HDD) which allows you to 'dual-boot' to either Windows 95 or Windows 98? The reason I ask is that I don't seem to be able to get an old 3dfx voodoo1 card to work using Windows 98SE. The latest driver that appears to be available to Win9x users for the voodoo1 card is a Direct X 5 version. As Windows 98SE ships with Direct X 6, (and then gets updated to Direct X 9 when I install my primary graphics card driver package), I don't think I have a suitable system to use this card. When I run dxdiag or a 3dfx game, I get serious problems such as the screen goes all weird looking and I then need to reboot. Perhaps I'd h…

WIN95 Registry problem & can't get to Start Up Menu
by Guest Robin- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
Have a win95 system that will not boot, says there's a problem with the registry, need to restore registry and reboot, and then I can't get it to do anything else, nothing. I'm trying to get to the startup menu to boot to safte mode. Everything I've read says to hit F8 when the 'start windows 95' screen appears. I do this but nothing happens. I get the 'start windows 95' blue screen twice during startup. I try hitting F8 (over & over again) at both times but it doesn't give me the start menu. I've tried F10, F9, & F4 also. Any ideas? The system ran fine Monday & shutdown seemed to run properly. Tuesday AM it would not boot. I have …

periodic desktop icons moving?
by Guest J. P. Gilliver (John)- 9 replies

From time to time, the icons on my desktop rearrange, all to the left. I do not have auto arrange icons set. I have Ez-desk, so it's not a major problem to put them back where I want them, but it _is_ irritating. It seems to come and go in phases, and I've had it on at least two machines. At the moment, I can't remember when it last happened on this laptop; on my desktop machine, it tends to happen at least once per session, within about ten or twenty minutes of booting. WinXP Suddenly Playing Win95 Start-Up Jingle!!
by Guest Prisoner at War- 9 replies

Hey, anyone know what happened here?? After I installed MS Office97 Small Business Edition the other day, my WinXP SP2 laptop has been booting up with the Win95 -- that's **95** -- jingle instead of the usual WinXP one! How did that happen??? And is this something I can customize?? Pretty cool, but it'd be even better if I could define what audio gets played (or not at all, even!).... Anyone know?? TIA!!

I have an old 1996 HP Pavilion Desktop running Windows 95. A few years ago my youngest keep turning it off and on until and it froze up one day. It's been that way for 3 year. Now, I need to recover some data off the HD that has been safely stored, I hope all these years. This is what happens after I turn it on. I need help with Dos mode
by Guest SeeKay- 6 replies

I have an OLD computer that I use to run old games. One game needs MS-DOS mode and CD-ROM access. The default MS-DOS mode on my Win-95 does not have a driver for the CD (or the mouse driver, but I can fix that one). I can find the MSCDEX.EXE but only the CDFS.vxd file. Do I need to find a .sys CD-ROM file or can the CDFS file work in the Config.sys section? If yes, what do I type in Config.sys to get it to work If no, any suggestions on where to find a .sys CD-ROM system file that works with Win-95. And no, I don't need a CD-read/write one. I'm not 100% sure the make of the CD drive since this is a cobbled computer from old parts, so I'll need a generic drive…

Win95 Time Machine
by Guest Luvrsmel- 5 replies

Hello.. I'm posting this with a Seanix P266 (overclocked to 300MHz) and designed for Windows 95 and running Windows 95. It feels like I'm back in 1996 again when I first started on the internet. I was on the internet before most folks knew what it was. At that time, I was using a 486 with a 2mb Trident video card and 16mbs of ram. I was on dial up and I thought I had everything! I will never forget that feeling when I configured my computer and got connected for the first time..wow. I have been on the internet ever since. OK, well, bye.

What web browser works inWin95 & still read modern web pages?
by Guest Marian M.- 5 replies

I'm trying to set up my old Win95 machine to use for email over dial-up connection to the U I'm a student at. Problem is, the machine has Netscape 4.7 & IE 5. something, and neither can read the U's web page for registering your computer on their system. I brought home a download for Firefox 2.0.0.9 & installed it, but whenever I start Firefox, the whole machine freezes. The only way out is to shut off the machine. What version of which web browser(s) will work under Windows95 and also be able to see modern webpages? Tia, Marian

Sounds stopped working-HELP!
by Guest Lori- 2 replies

This is for my aunt's computer. She out of nowhere has had her sound stop working in her machine. We have tried to disconnect and reconnect her speakers and you hear the crackle like there is sound, but nothing comes through that should. Of course it has been rebooted. Don't know where to go since I operate on Windows XP and it's been a long time since I've been on 98. Does anyone have any suggestions, please, as to how to troubleshoot this? Thank you very much.
