xcopy /z and resuming - and the no percentage
by Guest jameshanley39@yahoo.co.uk- 13 replies

I know that copy /z gives a percentage. But it seems that xcopy doesn't. Fair enough. But i'd like to know how far it has got. Suppose I break and resume (I know, prob only possible to resume for a network copy, but ok, let's say it's a network copy) Are there any ways - even very techie ways - to show how much has been copied e.g. how many bytes. and so when see that it resumed, ..that it has added to those bytes. so that if one pauses it, and then resumes, one can see. Maybe a program that can quickly browse through bytes of a 200MB file ? note- I know that copy and suspect xcopy too, only resumes for network copies, like (or i.e. rather) co…

NT 4 machine hard drive trouble
by Guest Penny- 8 replies

I have an NT 4 machine that suddenly won't boot. I tried repairing the NT installation but the machine doesn't see the hard drive. Does anyone know if it's an option to slave the hard drive to another machine with a different OS to attempt to get files off of it? I don't have another NT machine available. Then there's running chkdsk I've got a windows 2000 machine I can slave it too, would that work?

re earlier thread i checked my win-NT4 NTFS version (i never did service pack 4; just 3,5,6a) http://thinkpads.com/WinXP_Comments1.htm (instructions for using dskprobe to determine NTFS version - makes brain surgery or rocket science seem trivial) 2nd line after the 70 line was 01 02 so my NTFS is still 1.2 ?? these might help? On the computer with Windows NT Server 4.0 (SP6a) in the Event Log I received next message: Source: Disk ID: 43 Crash dump is disabled! NT failed to initalize the boot partition paging file for crashdump. This may be because the system has more than 3.8GB of physical memory. What's the problem? Michael S. Androsov

Size of harddrives to Ghost with NT Server 4.0
by Guest wombat52002@yahoo.co.uk- 5 replies

I have a legacy server with NT 4.0 server. I have ghosted back up drives around 80 GB IDE/ATA and they have been fine. I recently bought some 160 GB IDE and they ghost but they will not boot. Should I stick to buying 40, 60 or 80 GB IDE's to ghost. I can still find new drives in a box in 40-80 GB range. Is there something in NT Server 4.0 that cannot handle drives over 80 GB? I will be moving to VmWare soon. Thanks.

by Guest mirin- 4 replies
Hello Experts, Every time my machine restarts, the RasMan (Remote Access Connection Manager) Service is disabled as a network security policy. I cannot change this policy for a single machine. So I want to write a batch file, scheduled to run at startup, which will: 1. Set the startup type to Automatic or Manual 2. Start the service I suppose for #2 I'll need to run the command 'NET START RasMan'. What command do I need to put in the batch file for #1? Much appreciate any advice. Regards, Mirin

Help with Event Viewer timetamp for login/logout?
by Guest Scott Ehrlich- 3 replies
I have a Windows XP w/SP2 machine on an isolated LAN, with a Linux server acting as a Samba NT 4 PDC. A review on the Windows machine's event viewer revealed a user's account that only had a logout entry and a very unusual hour. Just before that entry, someone else had logged in and logged out, but several hours beforehand. I keep very tight controls on the systems, and I'm the only one with Admin/root rights. What might be the cause of that unusual entry? Thanks for any insights. Scott

Hello after applying Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-001 Unchecked Buffer in Locator Service Could Lead to Code Execution (810833) gives some problems on this dual processor NT4 - Sp6A system. ** The information at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810833 looks about the same as my pdf file made at 26 January 2003 ** Since applying the patch to this system I have some trouble starting up which might take two or three tries. Since I have installed the patch for a part the first time (forgot to switch off the NOd 32 AV) and later I installed completely I can't roll the patch back. I can't find what files are involved in this patch but I would be happy if s…

changing the domain of a windows NT server?
by Guest Edward Letendre- 2 replies
I have a bit of a confusing problem for myself. I have a windows NT 4.0 server that I am looking after, as the administrator is long gone. This particular server was part of a domain called ATS. The domain controller for the ATS domain quit working a few months ago and there was no backup domain controller (bad design I know but that is the way it was setup before I got there). Anyway, the only computer left in the ATS domain is the atsadmin server that I want to move to a different domain called SQL2. On the atsadmin computer, there is a SQL Server 7 database that is usually stopped and also an IIS server that seems to be disabled at the moment. The…

Server not recognized
by Guest RonC- 2 replies
I have an NT 4.0 computer acting as the domain controller and file server for a small network (4 computers). Only one domain involved. I am trying to install this hard drive into a faster computer. When I do, although the OS boots up and logs on to the domain, the domain cannot fully recognize the file server. WINS Manager sees the server computer name, so does NT Diagnostics, but the Server app in Control Panel shows no sessions, Network Neighborhood shows the domain but no server, and any attempt by other computers to access shares on the server fails. What can I do to resolve this?

Greetings, I have 2 NT4 sp6a Servers. After installing a patch agent I noticed I was not longer able to get to the Internet on either machine. I got an error "The ordinal 437 could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll". I uninstalled the patch agent and I reinstalled IE6 w/sp1 but got two file missing or deleted errors. File names were Cryptdlg.dll and Crypttext.dll. I was able to finish the IE install and IE worked except for SSL sites. I have reinstalles SP6a high encryption to no avail. I need to get SSL working because we use a remote control agent to access these two machines and the agent wont install correctly until I fix this …

DoD Harddrive Secure Erase Wipe
by Guest oktokie- 2 replies

DoD Harddrive Secure Erase Wipe I have a project which I need to DoD harddrives for the company. I have large raid-scsi enclosure which I can use. I have access Quad/Octa Xeon P4 servers with 3 dual channel LVE/SE ultra scsi 160 cards. With these, I would be able to drive 4 x 14 scsi drive (IBM EXP300 / 3531-1RU) units. What are my options? I was thinking about doing following. 1. for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do time dd /dev/random of=/dev/sda bs=1048576; done Use the random bits into drive 7 times. I think with 14 x 36GB scsi in raid5 setup would take approximately 18 x 7pass = 5 days. This is pretty bad. 2. I could setup stripped version of gento…

Slightly OT - 98 or NT4?
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 2 replies
My apologies for the OT post, but I am curious to ask an opinion on this. The machine I have originally came with your choice of 98 or NT4 on it. I have 98SE running pretty well thanks to the support and experience of this group. A friend of mine has a full install CD for NT4 Workstation he hasn't used for years and he is happy to gift it to me if I want it. Apart from the fact that NT groups on the Internet are fairly quiet now-a-days I think am more likely to get an unbiased opinion here I think from anyone who has used it. I don't use the machine for games - I run MS Office 97, and use Firefox and Thunderbird. I would gain stability from switching to…

Correct drive letter after an image restore?
by Guest Sven Berg- 1 reply
After I restored an partition image of NT onto a new PC, the restored system assignes a different drive letter to itself than originally. As a consequence, its boot process does not even procede to the desktop display. Unfortunately, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188 applies only to w2k or later. Now, what can i do to get NT back to the original letter? Possible registry changes by regdt32 would not be a problem. Thanks, Sven
