DISKPART-like utility for Windows NT?
by Guest Taed Wynnell- 1 reply

We have a large number of remote Windows NT Server systems that we want to wipe clean and replace with a Windows Server 2003 disk image. To do that, we were considering doing something like: -- Create a new bootable partition -- Copy a WinPE disk image into it -- Mark the WinNT partition as not bootable -- Reboot the system, thus booting into WinPE -- Delete the old WinNT disk partition -- Create a new Win2003 disk partition -- Copy the disk image into the Win2003 disk partition -- Reboot and we're done! We've done the latter steps previously, so we're not bothered by the WinPE work. But to get there, we need to be able to…

I have nt4 sp6 on drive D of a 10gig WD HD but it only sees 8 gigs? Also I have DOS and Win 3.1 on Drive C. Neither of these see the full HD and DOS does not see the cd rom on this 133 packard bell. Now I would like to install the original Win 95. Since my current boot up is dual where I type Win to enter win 3.1, what would be the best way to install this and fix the other issues? thanks mc

..Hello, When I attempted to register my ssl certificate, I could not find Certificates in the mmc Add Remove Snap In window. During investigation I found that CertMgr.msc was in my system32 folder, but CertMgr.dll was not. In fact it doesn't appear to be on the server when doing a file search. Where can I go (and trust) to find this file so I can download it? Thanks! Chuck

I have an NT4 server running Exchange 5.5 in a Server 2003 interim mode AD domain. Just today, the server started experiencing issues that make me think its related to the computer account or secure channel between the server and the domain. When I try to start services sch as Exchange services, which run under a domain account, I get error: 2140 An internal Windows NT error occurred. If I reboot, I get the same issue. I checked DNS, and I'm only using internal DNS servers. I have my hosts and lmhosts setup just fine with all the proper entries which worked fine for years and has not changed. I am thinking about joining the server to a workgroup an…

There is a PC named "pcname-01" in my LAN, there are several shared folders. I can use "\\pcname-01" to see all of them. What I want to do is to map it as a network drive. However I can only map to a specific folder, like this "net use \\pcname-01\sharefolder1" Is there a method to map all the shared folders? Just like I type "\ \pcname-01"

changing the domain of a windows NT server?
by Guest Edward Letendre- 2 replies

I have a bit of a confusing problem for myself. I have a windows NT 4.0 server that I am looking after, as the administrator is long gone. This particular server was part of a domain called ATS. The domain controller for the ATS domain quit working a few months ago and there was no backup domain controller (bad design I know but that is the way it was setup before I got there). Anyway, the only computer left in the ATS domain is the atsadmin server that I want to move to a different domain called SQL2. On the atsadmin computer, there is a SQL Server 7 database that is usually stopped and also an IIS server that seems to be disabled at the moment. The…

NT4 NTFS Versions

re earlier thread i checked my win-NT4 NTFS version (i never did service pack 4; just 3,5,6a) http://thinkpads.com/WinXP_Comments1.htm (instructions for using dskprobe to determine NTFS version - makes brain surgery or rocket science seem trivial) 2nd line after the 70 line was 01 02 so my NTFS is still 1.2 ?? these might help? Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) has come a very long way since its beginning both in terms of stability and performance. IIS 6.0, which is the latest and greatest version of IIS, rolls out with Windows Server 2003. How does it compare with earlier versions? Convert user from workgroup to domain keeping settings
by Guest poppet- 1 reply
We had a new server installed some 7months ago at which time we converted from all users from belonging to a workgroup to a domain. When this was done I recall the tech guy going round each workstation logging onto domain, changing a registry setting which enabled them to retrieve the old settings they used to see when logging on as their old logon when part of workgroup. Does anyone ever remember using this tweak? I need to add another pc to domain which didn't get done @ time of change which currently has lots of programs we can't afford to loose so really would appreciate if someone could help Pete

Server not recognized
by Guest RonC- 2 replies

I have an NT 4.0 computer acting as the domain controller and file server for a small network (4 computers). Only one domain involved. I am trying to install this hard drive into a faster computer. When I do, although the OS boots up and logs on to the domain, the domain cannot fully recognize the file server. WINS Manager sees the server computer name, so does NT Diagnostics, but the Server app in Control Panel shows no sessions, Network Neighborhood shows the domain but no server, and any attempt by other computers to access shares on the server fails. What can I do to resolve this?

NT 4 machine hard drive trouble
by Guest Penny- 8 replies

I have an NT 4 machine that suddenly won't boot. I tried repairing the NT installation but the machine doesn't see the hard drive. Does anyone know if it's an option to slave the hard drive to another machine with a different OS to attempt to get files off of it? I don't have another NT machine available. Then there's running chkdsk I've got a windows 2000 machine I can slave it too, would that work?

Correct drive letter after an image restore?
by Guest Sven Berg- 1 reply
After I restored an partition image of NT onto a new PC, the restored system assignes a different drive letter to itself than originally. As a consequence, its boot process does not even procede to the desktop display. Unfortunately, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188 applies only to w2k or later. Now, what can i do to get NT back to the original letter? Possible registry changes by regdt32 would not be a problem. Thanks, Sven

bat file access denied on nt server
by Guest txodo- 0 replies

I have a batch file which is a simple xcopy of files from a workstation running xp pro to an nt server on our domain. Every time the batch file is run, the file copy fails with "access denied". If the user on the same workstation simply uses explorer and highlights and drags the files to the server, it works just file. I have given the user full rights to the folder she is copying to but I am assuming I am missing something in giving her rights to copy by using a batch file. Any way to solve this apparently simple problem. The user on the xp workstation is logged in as a user on our nt domain. I would like the batch file to work as I am not sure I would t…

Greetings, I have 2 NT4 sp6a Servers. After installing a patch agent I noticed I was not longer able to get to the Internet on either machine. I got an error "The ordinal 437 could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll". I uninstalled the patch agent and I reinstalled IE6 w/sp1 but got two file missing or deleted errors. File names were Cryptdlg.dll and Crypttext.dll. I was able to finish the IE install and IE worked except for SSL sites. I have reinstalles SP6a high encryption to no avail. I need to get SSL working because we use a remote control agent to access these two machines and the agent wont install correctly until I fix this …
