Admin/User Access
by Guest Summer1- 7 replies
- 4.1k views
Good Day: I have always used Windows 2000 so Windows XP is new to me. I was told not to be 'permanently' signed in as an Administrator unless I am performing a task. In 'User Acclounts,' It shows 2 accounts. I have set Administrator access to 'Password-protected' and and it shows the 'Guest' account is turned off. Is there a 'User' account or just those two? Which one do I want o be signed-in as or neither? How do I check which one I 'am' signed-in to? Thanks!

How do I clear a Stop 0x0000007E error ?
by Guest Bill Simard- 1 reply
- 3.2k views
I replaced my motherboard and I tried reinstalling my OS using the original CD. I copies the install file to the drive and reboots, then the splash screen appears, then I get Inaccessable_boot_device Stop 0x0000007E (0xC0000005) (0xBA9E8750) (0xBACCB42C) (0xBACCB128) What do I need to do to clear this. This is on a Compaq machine running XP pro. Usually doing a reinstall (upgrade) works to fix this, but not this time. I can get in using safe mode, so if anyone knows what files I need to delete or reg entries I need to delete to make this stop, that would be great. I'm guessing it is looking for the SCSI drive that is no loger there. I'm on an SA…

Outlook Express message??
by Guest Jo- 14 replies
- 4.2k views
My apologies if you see this post more than once, since I'm not quite sure which group to post it in, so I'll post it in a few that might be relevant. For the last 3 days or so, I've had a message window appear when I boot up Windows (XP SP3). It says "Outlook Express. To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes." And then the OK or Cancel buttons. I have always clicked Cancel. Here's the weird thing -- I run Office Outlook (2003), NOT Outlook Express! I've never run Outlook Express -- not on this Windows installation anyway. Just in case this was an echo from Office Outlook, I compacted all my Outlook …

SP3, IE7, KB929798.

Hello All, I think after my 10 plus years in Infrastructure Support/Development I have come across my first proper DLL hell scenario. Whilst a solution does sort of exist (disabling Windows File Protection), I thought if I post here Microsoft will pick up the issue and deal with it (rather then me paying the £££'s on there pay-per-support incident line, to be told what I already know and then have to wait for a fix). BTW MS do provide free support for XP SP3 until March 2009, but only if the install fails or kills your computer, not for something 'minor' like this....... Here it goes: If you visit the MS update site with a XP SP2/IE 6 PC you will …

CAPS/Ctrl key hack, why hasn't someone written this utility?
by Guest Al Dykes- 7 replies
- 3.7k views
I'm one of those people that uses keyboards that can swap Caps and Ctl or I remap the keys in software. When I do this on a shared computer, I get evil looks, or worse. It just occured to me that a quiet beep tone whenever the CapsLock key changes state wouldn't confuse the unwary and would warn me me whenever I was using a shared machine. An upward tone would indicate CAPS on and a downward beep would indicate CAPS going off. Has anyone written this for any OS? -- Al Dykes News is something someone wants to suppress, everything else is advertising. - Lord Northcliffe, publisher of the Daily Mail

Bluescreen of startup
by Guest Barryco- 8 replies

My PC as it boots up shows a blue screen after the Windows Xp welcome screen (with the blue bars scrolling)...it never gets to the logon screen. If the machine is set to restart after an error, the blue screen flashes quickly (too fast to read) and it then restarts. It will work fine in safe mode. The message on the BSOD is: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect damage to your computer. SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly i…

Gurus, Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Sony Vaio laptop. The system has been running fine except for one little problem - when I try to use the "Undock Computer" option from the Start Menu nothing happens. It used to work fine - and present a dialog box indicating "Undock is complete" but now it doesn't do that anymore. Thoughts? -- Spin

Problems with XP
by Guest Searcher7- 2 replies

My present drive, which is a old Maxtor 6G with Windows ME, will not allow me to download anything to the USB Micro drive attached to my system. In fact it is so corrupted I can no longer open files or navigate to my computer anymore. In an effort to move on, I grabbed one of three 40G hard drives I have that are the same model and attempted installed Windows XP on it. The install never completed. I tried the second drive and managed what I thought was a successful installation. When hooked up to my system it worked and even allowed internet access without me having to install anything more. That was a couple of months ago.(I put the old Maxtor back in becaus…

Works Question
by Guest Jeff- 2 replies
- 3.2k views
I have an XP SP2 computer that is running Microsoft Works 7.0. When I amsaving a file in the Word Processor, I click on Save As, and the Save As Dialog box will open. In the filename field, there is a list of strange characters that I have never seen before. I go ahead and erase these characters and then type in a relevant filename. For example, I will call a file customerinfo.wps for example. Later on when I go to open the file in the Works Task Launcher, the file name is a single character, such as c.wps. If I click on it, the file is there. How is the filename getting changed all the time and how can i fix it? Thanks for any ideas. Jeff

how to run an executable file when Windows won't start
by Guest courtney nhc- 9 replies
- 3.8k views
Hello there. I have a corrupt registry and am trying to follow the instructions in this knowledgebase article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B307545 I would prefer to run the Guided Help (now partly because one of the files I'm supposed to repair in the manual instructions cannot be copied and I don't know what to do), but I don't know how to run a program when Windows won't start, and there are no instructions in the KB article. Which is strange, because it's right there in the title: "...prevents Windows from starting" so they should probably have instructions for how to run an exe file when you can't start Windows. Any…

Can't change file association in XP
by Guest cyndiwise notsowise- 10 replies

I'm using XP SP3 and I tried to change the file association for some .php files. Currently, these files are associated with Dreamweaver because I installed a trial of DW. I have decided not to buy DW, and the trial has expired so now I need to change the file associations for .php files to my current HTML editor, which is notepad++. In explorer, I right-clicked on one of the .php files and selected Open With>Choose Program...>Browse>Program Files>Notepad++>ansi>notepad++.exe. However, when I clicked OK, then on the Open With dialog screen, Notepad++ is still not an option. I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Thanks, Cyndi

Shortest way to set folder options?

WinXP Pro SP3 Hi. I have to frequently change my folder default from Details to Thumbnails and back. I use the Views button, but it has become my default view, so I additionally have to click Folder Options button > View tab > Apply to all folders > Yes > OK. Is there a shorter method with less clicks, such as a batch file maybe? Thanks, Melina
