Gurus, Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Sony Vaio laptop. The system has been running fine except for one little problem - when I try to use the "Undock Computer" option from the Start Menu nothing happens. It used to work fine - and present a dialog box indicating "Undock is complete" but now it doesn't do that anymore. Thoughts? -- Spin

I have Google set as my home page. When I open it, it doesn't remember my "preferences"; i.e., open search results in new window, don't suggest resultsas I am typing, etc. Also, I belong to a forum, and I always check "remember me" when I log in.....it doesn't. Any suggestions?

Admin/User Access
by Guest Summer1- 7 replies

Good Day: I have always used Windows 2000 so Windows XP is new to me. I was told not to be 'permanently' signed in as an Administrator unless I am performing a task. In 'User Acclounts,' It shows 2 accounts. I have set Administrator access to 'Password-protected' and and it shows the 'Guest' account is turned off. Is there a 'User' account or just those two? Which one do I want o be signed-in as or neither? How do I check which one I 'am' signed-in to? Thanks!

How do I clear a Stop 0x0000007E error ?
by Guest Bill Simard- 1 reply

I replaced my motherboard and I tried reinstalling my OS using the original CD. I copies the install file to the drive and reboots, then the splash screen appears, then I get Inaccessable_boot_device Stop 0x0000007E (0xC0000005) (0xBA9E8750) (0xBACCB42C) (0xBACCB128) What do I need to do to clear this. This is on a Compaq machine running XP pro. Usually doing a reinstall (upgrade) works to fix this, but not this time. I can get in using safe mode, so if anyone knows what files I need to delete or reg entries I need to delete to make this stop, that would be great. I'm guessing it is looking for the SCSI drive that is no loger there. I'm on an SA…

With thanks for any help, Eric Schurmann

WinXP Pro SP3 Hi. I have to frequently change my folder default from Details to Thumbnails and back. I use the Views button, but it has become my default view, so I additionally have to click Folder Options button > View tab > Apply to all folders > Yes > OK. Is there a shorter method with less clicks, such as a batch file maybe? Thanks, Melina

Remote Time Update
by Guest Lost in Microbiology- 1 reply

We have two notebook computers in the field that are not connected to the internet or network. The users have limited accounts. Is there a way to update the time zone (or clock time) as a limited user without giving them the administrator password? Or even a batch file I could create and write to a disk or flash drive to have them boot and/or use? These computers contain patient information, so all wireless and lan setting were disabled so the sites could not modify certain settings. Thanks for any help or ideas for life science inclined.

Solved: Long delay before context menu shows up
by Guest Robert Kochem- 0 replies

Hi newsgroup. The last months I noticed that opening the context menu of shortcuts took sometimes very long (5-10 seconds). I found out fast that this happens only on shortcuts that are broken (the executable the shortcut links to does not exist anymore) - but it only happens on one PC therefore a software (or to be detailed a shell extension) must have been the cause. Investigating a problematic shell extension isn't simple but finally I found today the cause: Using Sysinternals ProcessMonitor i traced the long delay back to a shell extension named "CmdLineExt.dll" (located in the system32 folder). The DLL description named it as "SecuROM context menu for …

SP3, IE7, KB929798.

Hello All, I think after my 10 plus years in Infrastructure Support/Development I have come across my first proper DLL hell scenario. Whilst a solution does sort of exist (disabling Windows File Protection), I thought if I post here Microsoft will pick up the issue and deal with it (rather then me paying the £££'s on there pay-per-support incident line, to be told what I already know and then have to wait for a fix). BTW MS do provide free support for XP SP3 until March 2009, but only if the install fails or kills your computer, not for something 'minor' like this....... Here it goes: If you visit the MS update site with a XP SP2/IE 6 PC you will …

HELP! Chkdsk /r deleted files.
by Guest Display_Name- 3 replies

I had a machine running XP Pro SP2 that started complaining about a corrupt HAL.DLL error. I used MS's KB#314477 and used the XP CD to run a recovery. The recovery ran fine. I booted from CD, selected Repair existing install, got to the console, typed bootcfg /rebuild and then did a chkdsk /r. It successfully got past the HAL.DLL error and was able to boot to Windows. The problem is that not all my data is there. There is SOME of my data, but not all. It's like the PC was reset to sometime close to the original install, but with SOME of my data. HELP!!! It seems like to reset the MBR to sometime in the past. How can I at least get my data that is miss…
