problem with an user profile: Is there any way to restore it? When I try to log on a warning appears: 'It is impossible to load the user profile' [my error is in Italian]. In User Profiles under Status for profile with problem I read 'Backup' and not 'Local' like others. -- Lily2009

Installing printers for non-admins
by Guest Gis Bun- 0 replies
Hi. Our Win XP PCs print to the IP [address] port of our network printers, but in order to create a new port locally and add a printer, the user requires admin rights [which most don't have]. Therefore we have to log them out and then we log in. Is there such thing as a MSC applet for printers? This way I can either go in remotely (as most MSC applets allow) or at the PC changing the MMC authority to the local admin. Thanks

Typed words appear backwards
by Guest KateKelly- 6 replies

When typing on my laptop, whatever I type started appearing backwards. For instance, if I typed "katekelly", it would appear "ylleketak". If I typed a sentence, the entire sentence would appear backwards. I recently loaded a bunch of music into the media center. It loaded my entire documents file. I started deleting stuff that wasn't music related when I noticed it was asking if I wanted to delete it from my "PC". I thought it was just deleting from the media center. I'm new with computers and not really sure what I'm doing. -- Thanks, Kate

How bad is IE 7 let alone Vista
by Guest GTT- 2 replies

...the IE7 view is changed so I cannot find stuff, the ergonomics... the placement of the home page icon is giving me carpal tunnel. And I have yet to find my Outlook Express icon on the IE 7 Homepage. Again, Microsoft's evolution incorporating change for the sake of change, has negatively affected my quality of life. As to XP and Vista? 2K was working fine but MagicJack decided to collude with Microsoft and designed their unit to only work on registered, legal MS XP and newer. If only I was techie enough to partition my HD and dual boot with Linux ....pushing applicatins toward Linux We owe MS nothing for their evolution. In the past I booted Wi…

IE tweak for more speed
by Guest James Finch- 12 replies

Dear Ross, I cannot really suggest any programs that will speed up Internet Explorer. From my experience, programs that claim to speed up your Internet connection simply don't. I can, however, suggest the following: * Delete your temporary Internet files every couple of days. A full Temporary Internet Files folder will significantly reduce your browsing speed, as well as causing a few other problems * On the Advanced tab of Internet Explorer's Options dialog, in the Multimedia section, uncheck anything you don't need IE to load on a Web page. For example, if you uncheck 'Play sounds in webpages', IE won't bother downloading them. This will speed thing…

My hide-inactive-icons arrow seems to want to come and go as it pleases. And yes, at any given time I have inactive icons to be hid. And, yes it is set to hide. But I suppose depending on its mood, it'll be there or not. Strange. Clues? -- ME

.bat file to copy files using current date as part of name?
by Guest +Bob+- 5 replies
I need to set up a bat file that will use xcopy to copy a directory from one drive to another. The resulting directory needs to incorporate the date that it is copied into the name. Something like this: xcopy c:\bigdir\*.*/s/e d:\bigdir-10-oct-2008\*.* I need to do this on a regular basis, so how can I pull the date within the bat file into a variable? Also, assuming I can get the date into a variable named something like "DateIn" will a command like this work: xcopy c:\bigdir\*.*/s/e d:\bigdir-%DateIn%\*.* Thanks,

Windows XP Pro automatically logs me out

If I leave my Windows XP Pro desktop unattended for a period of 10-15 minutes (estimate), the operating system logs me out automatically. I have to log back in each time I leave the computer unattended. Where can I change these settings?
