Machine name of the previous owner
by Guest Man T- 3 replies

My current machine is a clone of my colleague who used the 'ghost' tools to replicate his harddisk when I first came to my current company. I know it is not a good idea but that the way he did. I can see the reasons was he did not want me to spend time on the installation of all the softwares. Here's my actual question: I tried to create an installer using InstallShield and test it. However, on the page of the 'Customer Information' the 'User Name' box was filled with my colleague's name. It told me his footprint is left/spread in my machine. It also seems his name is set as default. How do I do to get rid of such thing?

-- Hello, I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Pentium 4 Processor 2.53GHz 512MB Memory PC 1066 RDRAM (2x256 modules) My programs take too long to open. I've deleted Temporary internet files, history & Cookies along with TEMP files. I've done a defrag and deleted many files on my hard drive which is 110GB 54GB free. Cleared Recent file folder and ran Ad a Ware, Spybot and AVG. My Firewall is only Zone Alarm, I turned off Windows Firewall thinking the 2 may be causing the delays. Any suggestions? I already re-formatted my entire computer. Is it time to buy a NEW Computer? -- thank you thank you

Hello, I need to be able to detect programaticallly from a Windows application the appearance of a new drive letter, e.g. z, y, etc. Ideally I would like to use an event driven approach. Is there a function in the Win32 API that will allow me to register a callback function that will be called when driver letters appear(are assigned by the Windows executive)? Thank you, Bill

audio settings menu using skype
by Guest flower- 9 replies
I have downloaded the latest version of skype, but on carrying out the test call, get the message "skype cannot hear you talking. Is your microphone muted?" Have gone through all the troubleshooting tips to no avail. My audio settings menu only has one option "Realtek AC97 Audio", and not "SoundMAX Digital Audio" which seems to be required for skype. This is strange, as with the previous version of skype everything worked perfectly. Does anyone have a solution?

List of Programs that will or won't work with XP Pro SP2 ?
by Guest Bill Watt- 24 replies
I bought XP Pro Upgrade and am considering upgrading my Win98 SE PC. I need to know which of my programs will or won't work. I found an area on the MS site but only found one, MS Office 97, and it needs a free upgrade. I can use Works instead. I could not find Front Page 2000, Quicken 99, Photo Shop 6, Greeting Card Deluxe 3 and some others. Is there a list somewhere that's easy to access? I could install them on my XP Pro Notebook to see if they work but that will be involved. I want to use the PC for the important stuff anyway. Would appreciate any suggestions. xp sp3 disc image
by Guest Gian Luca- 2 replies

My XP SP3 system needs some repair work. My own XP disc was purchased before the release of SP3. Today the disc was brought out with the intention of doing repairs and a window popped up saying the O/S on this disc is older than the one installed. I know I can still use my disc and then go through reinstalling all the updates or I can slipstream SP3 into the files on my disc and create a new disc. Towards that goal, I started reading. Good grief, so many places for something to go wrong or be omitted. Is it possible to acquire or purchase LEGALLY with proof of my registered XP copy, a disc image with SP3 already in place? Alternately is there an applet that will …

Scroll mouse
by Guest Oahuyahoo- 0 replies

I have searched extensively and can't seem to find the answer to this problem. My scroll mouse will out of the blue resize the window rather than go to the bottom of the page. I took out the old mouse and the new one is doing it also. It just does it randomly. I move the bar to the left a little in the hardware acceleration under my display adapter but it still does it. Right Clicking Problem
by Guest Valerie- 4 replies
I hope that I can explain this being I am a computer idiot. LOL When I want to copy, paste, print something or etc, I would always be able to right click and go to the function that I want to do. It would spell all the options in a little box. Now when I right click.....you can't see any of these options but if you go over the box without seeing them, they appear one at a time. I don't know what to do and hope you understand what I am talking about. Thanks, Valerie

System wrecked - where to go for help
by Guest Misterfyer- 4 replies
Following what I suspect to be a virus attack, I can no longer access my C drive fully - Windows Explorer only sees My Documents. System Restore is completely disabled, I get an error message from Internet Explorer every minute or so. Most desktop icons were wiped. Attempt to return to last known good config doesn't work. XP will not reload from CD. Where do I go for help?

"The Page Cannot Be Displayed" on certain Advertisements
by Guest ggalv- 18 replies

I have two computers that are showing "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" instead of the advertisements being displayed. This is occuring in Yahoo-Sports and Yahoo-Email. This has been going on for about 5 days. Here is the troubleshooting I have tried: This occurs in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla. Have connect the ethernet cable directly from the modem to the computer. Deleted Cookies, Deleted Files and Cleared History in Internet Options. In Internet Explorer - Internet Options, I made the 4 Security Options to default and in Advanced I Restored Defaults. Obtained the latest Java software. I am using a new modem from the DSL Provider. DSL provid…

Disappearing Folders
by Guest Cmdr Adama- 0 replies
I have a folder in which the files and folders in it have disappeared. However, they are still there, they are just not showing in Explorer. I know this for two reasons: 1) if I create a new folder it is named New Folder(x) ; it will then disappear. The next New Folder will be named New Folder(x+1) (it will also disappear). Thus, Explorer obviously knows that these folders are still there, it just doesn't show them. 2)If I go into Media Player and select Open File Location (these folders contain mp3's) I can get to the missing folders and I have been able to move them to another folder; but if I try to recreate the sub-folder in the original folder,…

Please, anyone know how to determine the finalization or multi-session status of a CDR (or CDRW or DVD etc) disc? The CD contains data which can be listed in Windows Explorer & read/ loaded correctly. But how can you tell whether more data (& how much) could be written without taking the potentially destructive step of actually trying to write data? Perhaps there is non-XP/microsoft s/w which can report on a CD disc status? TIA

Windows XP - System Restore (Restoration Incomplete)
by Guest ggalv- 3 replies

Yesterday, I did a System Restore twice to August 11th. But the problem that I was encountering did not get fixed. So Today, I was trying to undo those two system Restores (basically to get my system as current as possible with updates). Today - In system restore, I went to "Undo Last Restoration" and the the system successfully reversed the Restore Operation that I performed at 5:55 yesterday (which was to August 11th). Then I tried to undo the first system Restore that I did at 5:15 yesterday (which was to August 11th) - however that was not an option. The only avaialable Restoration to Undo was the one I performed today. So, I tried to Restor…

unable to connect on Windows XP SP2 - though able to ping???
by Guest DMinCA- 1 reply

my laptop connection to the internet is no longer working - none of my programs are able to connect (IE, Firefox, Skype for instance), except for ping which still works - I can ping the gateway, and get seemingly normal response times. When I bring up IE or Firefox after a while my Firewall (ZoneAlarm) asks whether program called "WLLogin Proxy" should be allowed to access the internet. I had not seen this program request access before I started having problems with my internet connection. I did a search on wllogin on microsoft's support site and did not get any hits. Do you know what this program is? I checked my IE configuration to make sure someone d…

I need to re-format my C: drive and reinstall all the software, inclusing XP. Problem is I have a number of copies of XP Pro and I have no idea which one was used on this machine. Where on the drive does the product key get stored? Having identified the correct disc and having done the re-install, will I have to go through activation again?

Every time I start my computer I get an error window saying "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\system32\proper.exe". Is This a real concern or should I ignore it. The funtionality of the computer does not seem compromised. However, I am no longer able to do a "system restore". Is this a result of the above error? -- normalnorm

Automatic Logon to Windows problem
by Guest baldy- 3 replies
Each time my PC starts now, I get an Automatic Logon To Windows screen appearing. In the user box it has the Administrator, & the password box is blank. It says that the computer is unable to log me on . I replace the Administrator user name with my user name and leave the password blank, and then I am able to logon. What I would like to do is for the PC to automatically log me on each time it starts, without having to go through the process I have mentioned. I have used userpasswords2 from the run command, and in the user accounts I have 3 accounts listed in the user tab. An administrator, ASPNET AND me. The box "users must enter a user name and p…
