XP Client hangs on "preparing network connections" for about 2 min
by Guest Bort Jitus- 0 replies

Hi, I have an XP client that was working fine, but now during the boot process it takes an extra few minutes to get past the "preparing network connections" component during start up. This machine is a domain memeber however this behaviour is occuring when it is connected to the domain LAN and when it's not connected. Any ideas? Thanks!

Transfer Wizard Error on restore
by Guest VikingFreddy- 0 replies
I had to re-install XP Home and used FAST prior to this to save everything to a flash drive. Re-installed the OS and then updated the computer to the same state as it was. i.e SP2 plus all updates. When I run FAST it starts running and the porgress bar starts moving. After some three or four minutes it stops with an error saying it is unable to continue. The error message states: Can't create the data needed to save settings. Make sure you have enough disc space. My hard drive has 90Gb of free space; can anyone shed some light on this? How can I get my files and settings back? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When I switch on my PC and get to the welcome page, instead of getting my user account name I get 2 error messages. One of which is the following: DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry. Then I get logged into a temporary desk top which loses all data each time I log off, and I have lost all my photos, document and music, etc but my internet connection works fine, luckily! Any help would be much appreciated please!!

VOB Files & Hadwaer Acceleration
by Guest Guest- 0 replies

Folks: For much of this month I have been using the latest version of RealPlayer to play VOB files on DVD. At first the video would be unstable (flickering) but the sound was clear & sharp. So I played around with the Hardware Acceleration settings until both video & audio were sharp & clear. Recently all this high quality has stopped. BOTH video & sound are now SLOW. Tweaking the Hardware Acceleration no longer makes any difference. I copied the DVDs to the hard drive but this did NOT improve audio or video output. Appreciate any suggestions. Is there any configuration change that I can make to return to great original quality of audi…

Hi there all you experts, I have a Compaq Pesario running XP SP2. It's connected to an ADSL 4 point router with an old HP running Windows 98SE. I've had a problem all along that I'm trying to fix. When I put my Pesario in standby mode it wakes up by its self. Could be a few minutes or an hour. Any suggestions. Thanks.

why all the .pdf e-mails?
by Guest Steve T- 15 replies

Just a general question for the group regarding spam/viruses. Is it just me or is there a sudden massive increase in .pdf file attachments in everybody else's e-mails too? I run Mailwasher Pro so I delete these at the server before they get to me. Is there some kind of virus or something circulating out there in the guise of a .pdf file? I probably get about 30 a week. Thanks, Steve T.

I am unable to install current Windows XP update Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366). I have exited Kaspersky 6.0 antivirus and my Outpost firewall to no avail. The net framework update for version 2 installed the download with no problem. Windows keeps trying to install when I exit Windows on turning the computer off. Do I need the 1.1 update? If so, how do I get it to install? Lastly since there is no download box to check for hiding and skipping this particular download how do I get rid of the annoyance on shutting down Windows?

July Microsoft Update issues
by Guest Steve Garry- 3 replies

Seems that there's a major problem with this month's updates. 2 machines done, and problems with both. Only another 10 or so to sort out now. The first machine was frozen when I got to it this morning, and required a cold boot to get it back working. That's on XP Home. The next machine here this evening (XP Pro with multiple user sign on's) appeared to update and restart correctly, but the fire wall (Zone Alarm) crashed while loading and produced an error report for onward submission. Another restart did not clear the problem. I then tried a power down and restart from cold, which appears to have allowed the machine to load whatever it needed into the…

Local files

I have a mirror of my site on my machine and use the local copy instead of the Internet one. Randomly when returning from another page on the Internet it will put up the don't want to allow ActiveX message bar at the top of the browser window. No ActiveX is on the page. Only some of the pages have JavaScript but they all put up the bar. How do I get it to accept my pages on my machine? The directory where they are found is in the trusted zone but I'm not about to list the 70+ pages individually in there. IE 7, XP SP2 both up to date

Windows .net Framework update probleams.
by Guest Nevio- 2 replies

I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. This morning I received the usual Windows Update Notification which had 5 or 6 items to update; all but one successfully updated, the one which would not was "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1". I had previously, 3 or 4 days ago, received an update notice to install "Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0" which I successfully installed. Not having any success after many attempts to install this latest "Microsoft ..Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" I called Microsoft support for help. I was instructed to remove ALL .Net Framworks (1.1, 2 & 3 and all security upadates thereof) using the Add/Remove module in the…

I am assisting a person who has XP and wants to know when the computer is ready to go - that the start up process is over. I thought that the icon arrow for the mouse might show when it is ready - as the hourglass changes to an arrow, but I am using Vista now and don't remember what XP does. Can I get help so I can answer this question? -- Gary Librarian

scenario: 19" widescreen monitor 4 port ps/2 kvm switch 1 comp duel boot kubuntu/windows xp problem: when windows loads up, it doesnt detect the monitor, im presuming this is because of the kvm switch, and will not go greater then 1386x800(or something similar). i need it to be able to tell it to use 1440 instead, no matter what windows thinks. i know that i am able to use 1440x900 through the kvm because kubuntu is working with it fine. i have tried installing the drivers 4 the monitor but it wont auto detect the correct driver, and forcing it to use the correct drivers only allows the 1386 resolution stated above. unplugging the kvm and plugging the …

The most likely cause is the laser or optical bloack as they are usually called, there are optic's inside the block as well to seperate the forward beam and the returned beam that has been modulated by the disc, also in the block is the focusing mechanism that moves the lens up and down and sideway's.... plenty to go wrong in them. At all cost avoid those cleaning disc with a brush fixe…
