Win98se cursors & themes
by Guest Greg T- 0 replies

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Win98se themes and cursors in WinXP. I have two drives hooked up, one with WinXP Pro SP2 and the other Win98se. Can I copy cursor and theme files from Win98 to WinXP without a problem. I have done this but it seems(not sure) that some of the cursors give me trouble with the cursor locking up after awhile(not all the time). I have done some investigation and it seems that the Nature cursors from Win98 Plus package work alright. I have checked with Paint Shop Pro and for the most part those cursors are 4bit/16 color cursors. When I switch to Travel(8bit/256 color) cursors I will get lockups after awhile. I could go …

Speeding up WE searches
by Guest Dan- 5 replies

My 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo XP Home machine which I built has 6 hdds (4 sata's & 3 ide's, no raid config at present) with a total of 10 partitions, ~ 2,000 gig of space, about half of which is currently full, mostly with thousands of multimedia files. Searching for a single file can be fairly time consuming. Not awful, but t takes several minutes & I wish it were faster. I have the indexing service turned on, but this has not noticeably shortened search times. Is there any other way to speed up searches across so much hdd space? TIA Dan

by Guest CCM Geek- 2 replies

I have 4 compaq deskpro PC's that came with XP Pro. There are stickers on the computers with the XP CD keys. I want to take those keys and convert them to product ID's to replace the current one on the registry. Any ideas how to do this? The current product ID in the registry is from my companys windows image NOT the actual one on the PC's. The company is giving these to employees now and does not want their VL key to be left on the PC's.

I have a Toshiba Tecra A4 laptop running Windows XP Pro. It has 2 USB ports. When I connect a mouse to any of the USB ports, I see the following message (displayed only once, not consistenly each time I connect the mouse to the USB port): USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB ports has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. I checked the Device Manager and verified that (1) USB Root Hub and (2) USB Universal & Enhanced Host Controller are working. Simply put, only my touchpad seems to work. However the mouse that I am using does not appear to work. Besides the mouse that I was originally using, I have tried 3 different mouse, but…

I got a pc that had a previous owner, It has Win XP Pro. I have deleted all user accounts but there are still folders and processes with that person's name. I changed the computer name as well. When I go to task manager it still shows many processes running with the old person's name. There is a folder in "documents and settings" with the old person's name that I cannot delete. Help! I want to remove ALL traces of this person from the computer - without reformatting the harddrive.

XP Home Taking Forever to boot. How to troubleshoot.
by Guest Bob Semancowitz- 3 replies

My customer has an HP Laptop running XP home. XP is patched to current levels. When the system boots, the computer loads the hardware profile that we select (we set up multiple hardware profiles to select various network configurations), and we quickly see the XP splash screen. Soon thereafter, we get the login window. Once we enter the username and password, it takes forever to see the desktop. We see blank wallpaper colors, but no icons. I'm guessing it takes a good minute to get to a point where we can do things with the computer. We do have 50 processes loading, but there is a point in this load cycle where the hard disk doesn't do anything …

Re: Repair does not work!
by Guest David B, SWE- 0 replies

Re: Repair does not work! I did not have the problem you did concerning the Hal.dll. But three times in the past three years I have encountered the "missing ASMS file" error -- using different XP setup CDs (all legal), and several different kinds of DVD and CD ROM drives. You ask, "can it be that an installation disk ask for files it did not put into the CD to begin with ... "? I think the answer to that question is yes. I would be interested to know what year appears on the Windows setup CD you used, as I suspect the bug might have been fixed sometime in 2004 or later. I am only interested in the year if it's a valid Microsoft hologram type CD you…

Files and Settings transfer wizard
by Guest Robert- 5 replies
Hello All, On a regular basis, I use the File & Settings transfer wizard to back up my settings to a "slave back up drive" in my desktop computer. Well, my primary drive crashed last week, and now I've replaced it with a new one, and reloaded XP, along with all my old programs, and all my saved files that I regularly back up to my slave drive. So now I want to also go to my slave drive and migrate my old settings that I've saved, onto the new drive, just like everything else I had backed up and successfully migrated onto the new hard drive. So I go to the folder where the settings are stored on the slave drive to make sure they are there, I can…

BSOD solved after 6 months - ram fault
by Guest dick- 1 reply
I was getting BSOD up to three times a day for the last 6 months. Tried micosofts memory check program, drwatson, dump files, looked for faulty drivers every day, etc. Finally gave up and bought a cheap pc that worked fine....until I decided to increase its ram by using the ram from the old machine....then got regular BSOD again. Chucked out the ram and everything was fine again. This ram could be tested for hours without fault using the microsoft memory check program....but since confining it to the rubbish bin my new pc is ok. The old failing pc is humming along nicely now it has been fitted with a new ram chip. Hope this experience helps someone …
