Help needed - XP Pro Freezing Up
by Guest -1- 0 replies

I thought this issue was related to just IE but today I realize, the issue affects my XP system in general, not just XP. I thought it was only IE because I surf mostly on the pc. I have a dual core pc, with 1 gig ram, IE 7, all patches, have and up to date antivirus and firewall and run XP Pro. While surfing the net, I find that over time, I can't open a link in a new tab. I try to open it and nothing happens. No errors whatsoever. When this first happens, I can get around it by closing one tab and then opening the one I want. Over time this doesn't work and if I have more then one copy of IE open, if I close one copy of IE, then I can open anothe…

Windows Backup Utility: Lost Power During Restore Job
by Guest Firecracker- 0 replies
So the power cord connected to my Seagate USB disk drive fell out in the middle of a restore job. I looked in the directory where the .bkf file was *supposed* to be and it was no longer there. Does anyone have ANY idea where the file could be? I did a search for the exact file name but it's not on my local system OR the backup drive. Side note: I was restoring the files from my backup disk to another machine on my home network (an iMac). I don't think it should matter, but thought I'd mention it. Would *really* appreciate help on this. I'm a consultant and I had client files on it. I've been trying to burn dvds all day to avoid just this issue..fi…

Getting rid of user accounts
by Guest cf- 10 replies

Can I make it so no one has to sign in as a user on Windows XP? I would like the computer to just start up without having to put in a password or designate a user. If I do delete a user account, will I lose all the files under that account? Thank you for any insights or assistance.

No taskbar button when programme is minimised
by Guest Lindiloo- 3 replies

Please help. Whenever I minimise a programme the button does not appear on the taskbar. It appears to be minimising but then disappears. When I open the task manager the programme is still running so I have to open the task manager instead of clicking on the button on the task bar to reopen the window. This has only happened recently. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks

How can I get the handle for the Taskbar
by Guest Sanjeev Sharma- 0 replies
I have rather two questions. First, where do I query technical stuff like this(Q on Subject) about WIndows? And second the question itself. I need to get handle for the taskbar but I don't know its window name so as to use 'FindWindow'. Anyother way? The code may be specific to WinXP and may be coded in VB or C++.

Windows XP Home Nightmare on Elm Street
by Guest Joe Cramblit- 3 replies

Got a MAJOR combination of problems. Running XP Service Pack 2 #1 My Installer is trashed I have done everything imaginable short of a hammer to fix it. I have run every Microsoft fix available. I have run a dozen others as well. I have run registry cleaners up the ying yang. I get several different error numbers. The most consistent is #1721. I have renamed all the msi files. They have been reinstalled. The new ones are broken as well. I've tried installing the Installer 3.1 with no change. I've read that you cannot really install 3.1 if you have service pack 2 installed. #2 I cannot UNINSTALL anything, therefore I cannot unistall/re-install servic…

PowerToys » PowerToy Calc - Somethin' Weird
by Guest Crazy Horse- 1 reply
I'm trying to figure out if my mind is playing tricks on me. I've been using PowerToy Calc for quite some time now. But today, when I opened it, I noticed a blue color scheme that I'm almost certain was never there before. I can't figure out how this could possibly be the case, since I have not updated or reinstalled this applet. I could be losin' my marbles on this one ... or there could be some other explanation that I have no clue about. Any feedback would be appreciated... even if it's "ur, uh, yeah... you *are* losin' your marbles on this one!" Thanks. -- _______ -CH ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

computer getting really slow
by Guest Tolstoy- 2 replies

My first post to this group, hope I'm in the right place and if not please direct me to the appropriate newsgroup. I've had this Toshiba Satellite A15S129 laptop for a few years now. It runs on WinXP. I use it at wifi spots around town, cafes and libraries and the like. It has antivirus and anti-spyware programs, up to date. Lately this laptop runs very slow. I really notice it in the Network Connections function. Network Connections works okay right after the computer boots, but if I have to use it more than once, it hangs. It seems like the misbehavior started when I tried to update Webroot Spy Sweeper, so I uninstalled it. The computer acts just the same…

Logging off problems
by Guest astrodog19- 1 reply

hey all. I am having trouble with logging off the user names on my desktop. This all started last week when I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. What happens is that I go to Start, Log Off, and then hit Log off. But the computer doesn't do anything. I took it to my local computer repair shop and they told me it was fixed. When it came back tonight, I was able to log off from the start menu only once. In order for me to log off, I have to go through the Task Manager. What is wrong? My computer is 7 years old and running Windows XP Professional SP2. Please help. -- -astrodog19

Prevent XP Professional from locking laptop every 15 minutes
by Guest Dave_in_gva- 8 replies

Hi, I have a work-provided laptop that has been setup by our IT department. I have admin privileges so can edit the registry, install programs etc. One thing that drives me nuts with their install is that they have set up the laptop to automatically lock after 15 minutes of no input. While this is fine for my desktop at work, I find it a real pain when I am on the road where often in meetings etc. How do I change this? I'd like to set up my laptop so it never locks me out. I don't mind logging on with my username and password etc. but each time I log on I am always with my laptop so there's no need to have it lock me out every 15 minutes. Best, …

"Welcome" Screen at Startup
by Guest Simon- 10 replies
I have just re-installed XP including SP2 and IE 7. When I start the PC it goes through the Windows XP screen and then the blue "Welcome" screen comes up. There is nothing else on it - no name or icon - just the single word "Welcome". After about 5 seconds it clears automatically ( no click required) and I am taken to Desktop. As the sole user of this machine I am happy not to have a password. My question is why does the Welcome screen display - in my circumstances it seems to have no purpose. Is there a fix so that it can be disabled and to enable me to be taken straight from the Windows XP splash to Desktop. Thanks.

My Recent Docs issue
by Guest Danny Smith- 1 reply
Hi folks, Each week I empty the list of My Recent Documents (just to keep things clear and organised) but then I find that thereafter whenever I open a document (such as a Word document, image file etc.) it doesn't appear on the My Recent Documents list - as if I didn't even open it - it just says it's empty. I've found a workaround, and that is to go to C:\Documents and Settings\JohnDoe\Recent, go to Properties, Security tab, and manually add my username to the permissions with Full Control, but the next week when I empty the list I have to do it again. Does anyone know of any way to 'fix it' so that I don't have to keep following that process every time I …

XP is asking for programs when clicking multimedia files
by Guest Lars-Erik Østerud- 2 replies

Even if the file-type setup is set right (as always) XP is asking what program I like to open the files in (on WAV, MP3, WMV etc). Some other types always open in "sound recorder" (the old one) even when the file-type is set to Media Player. Why is XP not using my settings? -- Lars-Erik - http://www.osterud.name - ICQ 7297605

I am setting up our PC in my small business. One Administrator account and several Limited User accounts planned. I do not want Limited User accounts to access the any hard drive files accept programs and their own data. Currently, any Limited User can just go to the C: drive (hard drive) and open and access any folder and file, even windows directory, et cetera. Not good. Please help. Jim
