I had this problem with one of my computers now it’s on the other. Looking for some help. When I try to start up word or send a message in outlook I get a box that looks like something is being uploaded and a message that says “Word is currently recovering your documents” then another message says “Word failed to start correctly last time….” Then “Do you want to start in safe mode?” Is this a Bug, Worm, Virus or something you can help me with? Any help would be appreciated. Already tried the following; Open Word:- 1]On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair. USB thumbdrives want to load a driver now...
by Guest coastergeez- 2 replies
Strange problem started...whenever I want to use a USB thumbdrive or my USB external harddrive, Windows says found new hardware then the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. I have tried letting it search for the driver and also tried picking some from \system32\drivers as well as the i386 directory. I reloaded my updated for SP2 as well the hotfix for Windows XP 226205 to no avail. My USB mouse still works, seems to be anything drive related. Anyone know whats going on here and how do I get the drivers back? I even removed all the USB related items in device manager, redetected and it loaded everything back but my USB drives still dont work. TIA

xp home upgrade 2nd license
by Guest allegra saline- 4 replies

I want to upgrade a second computer to xp home. I have the upgrade disk and the Product Key. The first computer (already upgraded) is at my second home in another state, so I don't have access to the Product ID off that first computer (didn't realize it existed, let alone that I would need it). Tried to purchase additional license on Microsoft website, but it asks for the Product ID, not the Product Key. Any way I can buy additional license with the Product Key but without the Product ID? This is a real hassle. -- paper tiger

Error on \Device\CdRom0 during paging operation ???
by Guest John7- 1 reply

Hi, I have seen these issues also with WinXP, so maybe someone has a clue... A customer's Server SBS 2003 has these problems (increasing) - CDrom has a bad block (ranging from none to 50+ times). - Error on CDrom during paging operation (about 20 times). (all per CD read attempt). I replaced the NEC DVD+/-RW by a NEW Pioneer DVD+/-RW. Reading CD's causes massive 'Errors during paging operation'. Explorer slows down to a crawl and seems not responding. It takes minutes to (re)draw the explorer window. When ejecting the DVD, the window redraws immediately. Happend with 3 DVD's/CD's. I didn't even dare to burn a DVD. I uninstalled Nero, 'Updated the …

WinXP SP2. Running fine one moment, then started receiving the above error when trying to run programs. Rebooted, and seemed OK up to the user icon screen. Select a user and again appears normal upto the loaded "tune". After a short while hear the "Dong" (problem sound). No user programs load. Can access the Task Manager via CTRL/ALT/DEL, which shows "System" and "Network" processes running. Only taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe show as user processes. Can open Windows Explorer via Start menu or desktop icon and can navigate through all folders and see all files, just cannot execute anything. Tried a google from my other machines and posts abound, but…

Launching program at startup w/o command window
by Guest +Bob+- 4 replies
I've written a program that I need to run just after logon. It runs from a Windows command line (perl program) via an installed Perl interface that's always there (i.e. .pl programs can be run from anywhere simply by typing their names at the command line). My program doesn't really interface with Windows much except to pop a window indicating an error condition - if it occurs. Then it terminates. I set it up to run out of the start menu under Startup, but that causes it to pop a command window to run. I also tried it from HKCU Run but it has the same effect. I'd like to run it more transparently, with no popped command window or perhaps an automatically mini…

Add Network Drive in a Workgroup
by Guest George Hester- 0 replies

Hi. My Windows XP Professional SP2 has been removed from a domain. I have set it to be a member of a Workgroup called just that. The other systems in this Workgroup are Windows 2000 Professional SP4. On the Windows XP machine I can easily make a Network drive to a drive on the W2K maching through the Add a Network Drive Wizard say for the root //MYMACHINE/c$. But on the Windows 2000 machine I get a prompt for a Network Password when I use the Add Network Drive Wizard on it which I do not know. If I set sharing on the Windows XP machine to share a drive then in Computers Near Me on the W2K machine I see the drive I shared. But I would prefer to use the A…

My Recent Documents
by Guest Danny Smith- 0 replies

Hi folks, Each week I empty the list of My Recent Documents (just to keep things clear and organised) but then I find that thereafter whenever I open a document (such as a Word document, image file etc.) it doesn't appear on the My Recent Documents list - as if I didn't even open it - it just says it's empty. I've found a workaround, and that is to go to C:\Documents and Settings\JohnDoe\Recent, go to Properties, Security tab, and manually add my username to the permissions with Full Control, but the next week when I empty the list I have to do it again. Does anyone know of any way to 'fix it' so that I don't have to keep following that process every…

Cannot back up
by Guest BruceM- 8 replies

I too am getting the error message "The backup file name could not be used. Please insure it is a valid path and that you have permission to access" when I try to use the Windows XP backup utility. I have a partitioned hard drive; my programs are on the C drive, and data is on the D drive. I'm trying to back up data from the D drive. I've read the discussions on this forum and understand that Windows XP cannot backup directly to a CD. I want to back my data up to a removable hard drive, but I'm getting the error message no matter what destination I try to use (C drive, D drive or the removable drive). I am not the administrator on this machine, …

Can't find digital camera wizard or install camera
by Guest Robert S- 8 replies

I have recently installed XP on a new PC. I've installed my Canon Powershot G3 from the install disk. When I plug the camera in nothing happens. If I go to control panel->Scanners and Cameras, it is there, but in the "Events" dialog it only lists "Camera is Detected". I can't find the Digital Camera wizard anywhere on the Start->Accessories menu. If I test the camera in the Control Panel, it says "Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test". My camera is not listed in "My Computer" either. Can anybody help?

I have Wimdows XP, today I tried to download some pictures from my camera and initially came up with this RunDLL error (there was more of a messge but this is all I remember)and said to report to Microsoft the problem, so I sent thinking I would get the box you could click on to find out what possible problems were causing this and never got it. After that I get this menu camera box up that you pick the program you want to open with and its blank. My camera says there is a connection problem, I then went to pictuers menu--get pictures from camera-- and a message comes up saying computer cannot detect camera. ??? Two weeks ago I took my computer in to get r…

Hi I have IIS setup on my Windows XP (SP2) machine. I am running SQL Server 2000 MSDE. I have, as far as i am aware, my computer setup with the date system for the UK. If i browse the data in the SQL database then it appears in the correct UK format, but as soon as this is displayed in a web browser it turns into american format, which is undesirable. I am at a loss as to how to fix this! I have had this problem before but cant remember how i remedied it! Any help will be extremely grateful!! Thanks Darren

Confused by WinXP Event Viewer Device Names
by Guest John Keiser- 1 reply
I have 2 hard drives: my boot drive [80 GB] has 2 partitions labeled "C" and "G"; my back up drive [120 GB] has 4 partitions labeled "D", "I" , "H" and "W" WinXP Event Viewer shows a bad block on "Device\Hardisk0\D" But WinXP Disk Management shows "Disk 0" as the HD with partitions labled "C" and "G" I've run VCOM's Disk Fixer ultility and show no errors on either. But I have no problem replacing a failing HD. My confusion is: which HD is Event Viewer reporting as having a bad block - the 80 GB or the 120 GB? Thank you for any advice. -- Remove -NOSPAM- to contact me.

I noticed that if I export a registry key to a .REG file, it is in Unicode format. If I create a .REG file by hand, does it have to be in Unicode format to be imported correctly?
