Desktop Icons Bootup Problem
by Guest Anton Jansen- 9 replies

Some months ago I presented this problem but it was never resolved. When I boot up the desktop icons 're-paint', not refresh, themselves completely. After 4 days of intensive research I found the following. When booting up, in a few instances the desktop icons refresh themselves. This is very rapid but is noticeble because is happens about 3 to 6 times. This is while the system is loading the start up items during bootup. One one occassion however, the screen is 're-painted' about three times and is a slow process compared with a 'refresh'. I have done selective bootups via 'msconfig' and found the problem. There is a file which loads from startup named C…

SyncToy installation
by Guest Joco- 10 replies

Hi In a previous post (Laptop / PC data Synchronization on 18-06-07) I was advised to install SyncToy in order to synchronize data files between my PC and Laptop. I have downloaded Synctoy V1.4. When attempting to install this, I am informed "this setup requires the .NET Framework V 2.0.50727" when clicking on the option to down load this file, you are redirected to a page that gives you the option of "X86", "X64" & "IA64" which of these three do I need? I already have "Windows Installer 3.1" which was downloaded under (KB893803) when released. My OS is XP Home SP2 Thanks for any help Joco (London)

Installation Source Not Available
by Guest ChuckW- 1 reply

Hi, I have office 2003 loaded on an xp laptop. Outlook is not running at all and when I open Word and Excel it starts and install wizard. Eventually it brings up these programs successfully. I tried to do a repair in Outlook but this did not work. I decided to uninstall office from add/remove programs. When I select Office 2003, I get a message that states "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." Can anyone help? I thought an uninstall and reinstall would fix the issue but since I can't uninstall I am not sure what to do next. Thanks -- Chuck W -- Chuck W

Replace my boot disk?
by Guest Paul H- 6 replies
I had a problem with my hard drive on my XP Pro desktop that turned out to be bad sectors. My other computer's XP Pro fixed them. A friend suggested that I get a new hard disk, as bad sectors are a sign of impending failure. How do I replicate my hard disk before it fails? So I can pull out the old one. install the new one, and boot the computer as if nothing had happened? No installing of applications, working with Microsoft to transfer my legal copy of XP Pro, etc. Do I have to buy some software that will cost more than the new disk will? TIA, Paul

No bootup after KB932716 Image Mastering API v2.0
by Guest Gateau- 0 replies
Yesterday I installed KB932716, the Image Mastering API v2.0 (IMAPIv2.0) update package for XP, x86 (32bit). Upon rebooting the splash screen will run forever. A Safe Boot also failed. My guess is that XP is having a problem loading the new CDROM.SYS. There is no information in the Event Viewer about the reboot. What I don't understand is why the new files cause a problem when the original SP2 files have always worked just fine. Any insight would be appreciated. FYI, I copied back the original SP2 files from the Recovery Console and all is currently well. But I'd like to have the Imapi v2.0 installed. Thanks.

Windows XP Remote Desktop Settings...
by Guest Nick- 8 replies
I'm attempting to set up a Windows XP machine so that only a certain program can be run when a user logs in via remote desktop, and that program starts automatically upon login. I've tried adjusting registry settings and using the gpedit.msc panel to enable this feature, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to do this, or does this setting not work in XP's version of Terminal Services? Thanks!

Windows Backups--"Wake computer"
by Guest rik- 0 replies
I have set up a backup using the backup app included in the XP operating system. I have told it to "wake the computer" to complete the event, I have made sure "run event only if logged in" is NOT checked. Nevertheless, the computer never "wakes", from standby, hibernation, or full power off, in order to complete at the scheduled time. Any ideas?

by Guest Skip Bisconer- 6 replies

I have been having some issues with a nasty pop-up issue in IE7 and I thought possibly I could resolve the problem by restoring my system. When I try to do a System Restore it tells me "System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried to go from Safe Mode but to no availe. I am on XP Pro SP2. I have recently installed a beta version of McAffee. (Don't know if the latter has anything to do with it.) It's been a couple months since I have had to use Restore. Thanks for looking at my problem. Any suggestions on the popup issue woud also be helpful.

I let my granddaughter play a game on my laptop and now for some unknown reason, I have no start button or taskbar. I have only found information on how to find the taskbar by right-clicking on the Start button, or to move the cursor to the area where the taskbar is located to have it reappear. None of this is working. Any ideas?

I have read about attributes of Computer Associates DNA Migrator to move applications and data from old XP computer to a new computer. If anyone reading this has used it, please advise as to how the hookup is made from one computer to another. Is it by attaching the hard drive from the old computer to the new computer, either by installing or using usb port enclosure for the old hard drive? all replies welcomed! Aaron

A friend has just bought a new Dell PC and ordered it with XP and not Vista. When the PC arrived it was fitted with Vista so he phoned the help line who said they would supply CDs to install XP. They duly arrived but not being very OK with computers he phoned the help line for assistance in loading XP. The assistance was given by an Indian Gentleman who he could not understand both from a language and technical point of view so he gave up Is there a clear set of written instructions available that he could follow? Service Pack 2 Error
by Guest Jordan Montgomery- 15 replies

I have the common "Access is denied" error from attempting to install SP2. See, uninstalled it today after having problems of installing IE7 thinking that if I were to reinstall SP2, I'd have IE7 by default. Well, I've been at the computer for hours, trying to follow the tutorial that Microsoft has about this "Acess is denied" error and how to fix it, but it has gotten me nowhere. I don't know what else to do. Though, I think it has to do something with the registry. Can I delete something off the registry from the past time that I had installed SP2? What could another problem me that is prompting the "Access is denied" error. Thanks. -- Take Ca…

a general moan, so excuse the long rambling on here... but also in case anyone has a better way... Curses !!! here we go again... it's almost becoming an annual event! Having to reinstall Windows and all applications, because the system is slowing up, applications are slower to burst into life after the initial CLick on the icon. internet Explorer is one that Is noticably slower to show up on screen! Yet having just assisting in setting up a new Pc - and watching the speed of boot up~ Aaah if only it could be like this always! I Wonder if M'soft has ever thought of (if it IS the registry), having some kind if registry splitting - one purely for Bootu…

In Task Manager, I've noticed a prgm. running, Apache.exe. Actually, two instances are running. I've searched and found this: C:\WINDOWS.0\Prefetch\APACHE.EXE-1BDF0C46.pf Suspecting the file's purpose, I compressed it into a .rar file and deleted the original. But still, everytime I reboot, the two instances of Apache.exe are seen in Task Manager. Is this file part of windows? R.A.
