Intel Dual Core Processors Advance System Clock When Playing Sounds Options
by Guest curt.goodhart@navy.mil- 0 replies
- 226 views
This is an amazing and troubling problem. It seems to relate to Windows XP and dual core processors. Simply put, playing a sound advances the system clock. I've seen extremes of about 6 to 10 seconds per minute. I suspect the problem is XP/Intel/MS related. Our PC is a double dual core Intel Xeon: a Dell Precision 690 (which has 2 Dempsey processors, Xeon 5050 series). We are running XP Pro OS 've also seen this on another offbrand PC with a Core 2 processor. This does not happen on non-dual core processor machines. Executing a "playsound" command (which is in the winmm.dll) instead of beep has the same effect (I suspect Beep probably executes a playso…

Received a response "CAN'T COLLECT INFORMATION" "Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing." Can't check email without restarting
by Guest Sheryl in TX- 3 replies
I am using XP SP2 - I first noticed a problem a couple of months ago when I had checked email when I started up my computer then closed Outlook Express. When I restarted it to check email, the program froze after selecting the "send/receive" button. After that, my MSN Messenger began doing the same thing - I could sign on after I started up the computer but if I closed the program and opened it again later, it would not sign on. I realized today that IE is behaving the same way - it will work after a reboot but if I close it and re-open, it will not connect to the internet. I use Firefox without that problem. I don't remember installing any programs…

Renaming boot disk and reinstallation of XP
by Guest Marten Nahlin- 1 reply
Hello, I have recently built a new PC with a new disk among other things. After install I notice that the disk is designated I: so i come here to see what to do. The answer I have found is to do first remove other disks (zip etc) and then a new install of XP. There seems to be no other way (that I would like to try) to change the name into C:. Now the question is do I need to do a clean install, together with reformating the drive or will a repair installation do? Thank you.

There is one filename.rar and then a pile of files named....e-filename-jn2k7.r00...e-filename-jn2k7.r02...e-filename-jn2k7.r04...e-filename-jn2k7.r05...e-filename-jn2k7.r06...e-filename-jn2k7.r09...e-filename-jn2k7.r10 etc. Does anyone have any idea as to what these files are? I THINK they're spanned Winrar files, but I can't be certain....

XP freezes when CD/DVD is used
by Guest HW- 3 replies
I cannot use any combination of CD/DVD ROM or RAM drive. The drive(s) start spinning (LED flickers) and within a a few seconds the PC freezes. A soft boot is not possible. This happens with any type of media inserted and files types, eg data files, html, pictures, music etc. However, occationally there is no problem at all. The same media works fine on other XP and VISTA PC. This fault was present before I had to replace the motherboard recently and is still present. I naturally suspect XP..... I would be greatful for some clues. Thanks ..... HW

by Guest Dan McGarigle- 1 reply

I have a big system, so a search on my machine takes 8-10 minutes, or more, and hits the hard drives hard. My search results can run to 40-50 screens, or more. It's easy to save the input to a search. How do I save the results of a search in XP, SP2 ?
