Caps Lock problem
by Guest Austruck- 6 replies
My stepdaughter has a problem on her HP laptop. She thinks she hit a weird key combination that has now done a sort of permanent "caps lock" to ALL her keys, not just the letters. This includes the numbers and symbols, which are all now showing up as opposite of what they normally are (as if she were holding the shift key down all the time). Rebooting doesn't get rid of it. It's happening in all programs, whenever she types. Other symptoms: -- Holding the shift key down doesn't change anything. -- Holding the Caps Lock key down changes the letters to lowercase but doesn't fix the number keys or punctuation keys. She's trying to find out what key comb…

Clean install of Windows XP "Hangs"
by Guest Thomi- 5 replies

I started yesterday to do a clean install and with help from Ken and Gordon obtained detailed instructions of the process. I manage to get into the installation as far as Windows "installing Devices" and it stops at about 65%. I've done this twice and waited an hour although the screen has indicted "Setup will complete in approximantly:33 minutes" and stayed there for some 40 minutes . Am I just being impatient and shoud wait even longer. or should I remove some of the hardware like the graphics card and install it later after the Windows installation is complete? Thanks Iain T

by Guest Mark- 3 replies

I have lost the ability to see my usb memory key when I am logged in under my network ID. If I log into the machine only I can see it. I believe it may have something to do with norton internet security. I have removed the program but I still can not see the key. Is there something that could affect one profile but not another?

LaCie USB External HD Problem

I recently purchased the above product, but when I try to format it in NTFS on my desktop (Windows XP SP2) I get the error, "The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer." It still doesn't work when I restart the computer. It DOES work on my wife's laptop, so I know the drive works. I found a thread in this group that may help if I was able to communicate with either party but I have been unsuccessful: [Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general From: Eli <E...@discussions.microsoft.com> Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2007 00:30:03 -0700 Local: Tues, Apr 10 2007 3:30 a…

Mirsoft XP startup
by Guest OS XP disgusted- 4 replies

I sent this email to Microsoft. Any solutions? I doubt it. Just when do you know when the computer is ready to work with after startup when the hour glass comes on and goes off continuously. Is it the first time, the second time or the third time the hour glass goes off? Don't you think this is not too smart?? I wait and wait and wait for the hour glass to go away, thinking that this is it. Know I can click on something and get started working, but NO, the hour glass came on again, it is still loading something. I have to wait for I don't know how long before it goes away and may come back up again. I have worked with a MAC for years and when all th…

Setting environment varibale with output from a program
by Guest Dennis.P.Mulqueeny@wellsfargo.com- 4 replies

I am trying to duplicate the following UNIX command in Windows XP DOS mode: set WFHM_DATE=`perl Calc_Prior_Work_Date.pl` which would set the WFHM_DATE to the value of 20070703 (when run on July 5th, 2007). I am running a third party software package that supports a DOS mode which is the only place I can manipulate the environment variables on-the-fly. I have tried doing 'perl Calc_Prior_Work_Date.pl | set WFHM_DATE='. It did not work. Any ideas? Dennis

Hi, Whenever my screensaver kicks in on resume I'm prompted for a password to unlock the PC. All fine you may say but the checbox that asks for a password on resume is UN-checked i.e. it shouldn't be asking for a password. Ive tried the obvious like checking the box and then un-checking again but the behavour persists. How can I stop this irritating feature. Mike

FTP connection error - XP professional SP2
by Guest Rye_Encoke- 3 replies
I play several online games. In order for the games to update patches I need to be able to access their ftp server. I get an FTP connection error! Please check the internet line connection. If I disable my windows xp firewall I can connect without a problem, but then I end up playing the game with no firewall which makes me nervous. I have added the associated files to the firewall exceptions, also added the correct ports to the exceptions. In internet tools I have unchecked the passive ftp, and also tried it while checked. Nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

by Guest ImASweetP- 4 replies

When In want to save an animated picture and I go to "save picture as" the only thing that shows up is bmp. Why doesn't it list all of the conversions...I think I need a gif to maintain the animation because now it looses all the animation that goes with the tag I'm downloading. I have infanview and since I cleaned my computer of some of my programs, the only thing that I can convert to is bmp and very rarely gif shows up. Thanx

Networking nightmare...

I have a real head scratcher here... I've been banging my head against the wall for a couple of days now. I've stumped a friend at work who is an MCSE, and I'm just about ready to wipe the system and start from scratch. This is what I'm really trying to avoid. I have a Windows XP Home Edition system with SP2 that has been running fine for several months. This is connected to a Linksys broadband router that does DHCP. Let me stress that this configuration has worked flawlessly for months. The system is a custom built, that I built myself. The motherboard is an Abit AB9 Pro that has a pair of built-in GigE network ports. A few nights ago everything…

I have another two year old XP, SP2, Symantac, all up to date. On initial booting, I get a "Windows did not start successfully...." I have tried all the options---safe mode, last configuration, etc. All lead to "Unmountable Boot Volume" message and Windows will not start. No recent hardware or software additions. This has happened before, but have always been able to reboot. Not this time after over 20 tries. Solution? -- Bill in California

XP Pro, SP2 I have 4GB RAM. XP says not. I have read the Service Note that says why, but that doesn't help much. I want to assign 2GB to Photoshop, however, PS says that there is less than 2 available and suggest assigning no more than 1.232 Should I simply ignore this and assign 2 to PS? If not, how do I fix this?

If I run the following script in a directory with two files named test1.txt & test2.txt, FILELIST should have the value of "Test2.txt;Test1.txt;NOFILES". Instead it has the value of "Test2.Txt;NOFILES". Can any one tell me why? Or how to get it to work correctly? @SET FILELIST=NOFILES @for %%f in (*.txt) do @( @echo %%f @set FILELIST= %%f;%FILELIST% @echo %FILELIST% ) Thanks,
