Clipboard forgets Contents
by Guest FGarvin- 3 replies

I have a User who is using the clipboard function (Copy/Paste) where she needs to continually use the same information over and over. She copies the information once and the clipboard should retain that information until she copies something else. Well, for some reason, the clipboard is forgetting the data after a few minutes (it is not a consistent time) without copying anything else. I can find no reason for this to happen. Any Ideas?

XP Activation
by Guest Mike- 13 replies

After several years of running XP on my computer, today it started telling me that significant hardware changes require me to reactivate Windows. I haven't changed any hardware in my computer. This is a genuine retail version of XP Home Upgrade that I bought when XP was released. XP Genuine Validation reports: "Windows must be activated in order to determine if the Windows product key installed on this computer is genuine." My software has always been activated and valid before, so how can I fix this? I've made no changes.

Boot up time
by Guest Victor- 9 replies
Over the past few months my office pc is taking longer and longer to boot. The desktop comes up pretty quick, but then it seems to take even longer for other stuff to load. Actually it looks like everything has loaded, but I can hear the hard disk running and the hour glass remains on the screen. I run disk cleanup and defrag regularly and empty my temp folders, etc. What could be causing this? I've just noticed that CrapCleaner has come out with a new version. Should I try using this? Thanks.

Is it safe to delete all default monitor keys?
by Guest beemer- 9 replies

I'm using XP prof sp3 and having display driver problems. Even after a thorough uninstall and registry clean of the Hitachi display driver I still have problems when I reinstall. There are many instances of "default monitor" in control panel/hardware/system and in my registry. Is it safe for me to delete all these entries (including the registry) under the circumstances when the OEM driver for my monitor is uninstalled? I'm concerned that on rebooting the monitor will not display anything. regards, Beemer

No sound suddenly
by Guest Man T- 2 replies

XP SP3 My PC suddenly cannot play sound and all the movies do not produce sound. I tried the following: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volumn Control Then it prompts me: "There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." It seems my sound card is dead. Any way I can check?

Instant Double Click Annoyance
by Guest Glyn_Techie- 8 replies
Before you ask, I have searched ans searched the web for an answer to this. Simple problem to explain. My mouse instantly double clicks in all applications. I have checked drivers, checked the sensitivity settings, checked all settings in the mouse applet in Control Panel in fact. The mouse is not old as the whole PC is only about 8 months old, so it isn't worn out either. I have even swapped out the mouse for another from a different machine. This is getting past annoying as it makes selection and movement in Excel very difficult. (About 80% of my day is in Excel). Any suggestions that do not cover the ground already crossed.

Regression

I haven't bitched at MS in a while, but tonight deserves one. - Why does Microsoft get to REPLACE my home page with a banner add about IE8 BETA? I don't care if it only comes up once every x loads - stop it. It's infantile and obtrusive (especially for a Beta product). - When did the Microsoft website become so unfriendly to submitting feedback about their products? I mean, you have to login to send an EMail fur chrissakes?!? You guys should be begging for feedback (more opportunities to make BETTER products) and not worrying about tracking where it comes from. Or are you that desperate to get people to use Login Live (or Hailstorm or Passport or w…

How do get rid of the Welcome Screen on startup
by Guest AllenM- 5 replies
OK before I used to turn on my laptop and would boot right into Windows. Now I get the Welcome Srceen or logon box depending on the settings. In Control Panel/User Accounts/Change the way a user logs on or off. I've unchecked the Use the Welcome Screen as well as the Use Fast User Switching. Doesn't matter what is unchecked or checked I can't get by this. What happened and how can I boot right into windows with no logon or welcome screen. Thanks.

Wireless network card not working
by Guest MBorsick- 4 replies
I have an IBM Thinkpad with a Linksys WPC54G R4 wireless card which has SP3 installed. The wireless card is not working when trying to connect to a wireless access point here. I can however, connect to an open access point next door. The WAP requires WPA2. I'm entering the correct information to connect, but cannot enter the encrytion key and therefore can't connect. I am trying to uninstall SP3, but now it's telling me access denied, I cannot do a system restore and that point doesn't exist anymore. I am assuming a reinstall of SP3 is in order, but I am concerned that the card and WPA2 is either not supported or can't be used, Please advise TIA -…

Filename wilcard characters in cmd.exe
by Guest Sean Nelson- 4 replies

I'm probably a relic, but I expected the old standard "*" (match zero or more characters) and "?" (match any 1 character) filename wildcarding characters to work in a Command Prompt window. They do work, after a fashion, but not in the way I would expect. For example: dir *.d?? displays files such as "Test.docx" dir *s.* displays files such as "exam.xls" Interestingly, the same wildcarded search patterns work as I expect in an Explorer search window. What exactly are the wildcard characters that cmd.exe accepts, and how are they interpreted?
