I can choose between "Optimize for quick removal" and "Optimize for performance" for my external USB flash drive when I logged as administrator, but it is always set to "Optimize for performance" when I work under user account. Is there a way to let a user work with "Optimize for quick removal" option switched on? Thanks in advance.

by Guest Jack B- 17 replies

When using Explore, I went to a folder with animations and right clicked on a gif file and chose "Open with", but it didn't show the program I wanted to use (Ulead GIF Animator). So I used Browse and found the executable & chose it; but, when I did that, all that happened was that the "Open with" window reappeared without the Ulead GIF Animator as a choice. What gives? Jack

duplicate listing of files in search results window
by Guest jdevola- 3 replies
This I find rather peculiar: When searching for files (e.g., *.*), search results window displays duplicate listing of same file (name, size, all attributes the same; location exactly the same!) Each file is apparently the same file (if open both, one opens; if delete one, both get deleted; if recover from recycle bin, both reappear in search window) listed twice in search window. I just noticed this recently, so it may be related to programs I've recently installed. What is going on here? Can this be fixed somehow? Anybody ever seen this before? Thanks in advance. -jd

Greetings All- When I use the "Eject" button when right clicking on an optical drive in my computer it only opens the drive but does not close it. Would anyone happen to know of a fix for this or how I could change my settings to make it both open and close when clicking the eject button? Thank you in advance. Elaine Beauxrauxgard-Weiderhoff

USB RNDIS Device Speed
by Guest Neeti- 0 replies

Hi, I have a USB RNDIS network device, which when connected to windows machine shows a network connection. The windows RNDIS driver queries OID_GEN_LINK_SPEED from device, what speed shall device return? I am asking this question because:- My device is a high speed device which means link speed is 480 Mbps. But since my device implements BULK endpoint, the bandwidth allocated to it will be 10% i.e Maximum 48 Mbps. Now If I say the speed is 480 Mbps what will windows use it for? Will the data transfers from window happen at speed of 480 Mbps or this OID property is just to show the link speed in network connection status window. If windows use this va…

I created a virtual image of a machine using Acronis. I'm trying to run the image on a different laptop. Both laptops are of same model (Dell latitude D630). When I start the virtual machine, the machine starts and when I try to login, I get this message: "This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?" Only a windows xp screen comes up when I click 'Yes' or 'No'. I could not activate Windows XP. How do I active Windows XP in this virtual machine? Thanks

Fragmentation of large video file
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 13 replies
OS=Windows XP Pro SP2 I downloaded a 1 hour video, file dn008.0318.mp4 from democracynow.com using the video player Miro.exe. The 451,294 KB, file had 6,264 fragments. When I use this process I typically get this degree of high fragmentation. Q1 - Is such high fragmentation to be expected with video files? Or does this indicate that I have a problem? Windows defrag couldn't defrag it (or several other video files.) Piniform defraggler showed 3 fragments after Defragging it. Information will be appreciated, Stan Hilliard

good backup/imaging software?
by Guest Dan- 12 replies

Looking to do a one-time hard-drive image for back-up. Not something that continually monitors changes, but something I can run whenever I feel the need to perform a backup to save to a DVD and load in the event of a system crash. Preferably free (if anything is available). I've bought a computer with three recovery CDs I can use to restore the computer to the state in which I bought it, but I have made so many changes since then, I would like to make a new recovery disc (DVD preferably). The CDs I have load Norton Ghost in a DOS environment. From there, I can choose to load from image to disc (I think is the option). Can I use this same app to bac…

Hard Drive activity
by Guest the K- 5 replies

Is it normal for the hard drive to be constantly active? While looking at a web page, without clicking any links, I notice that the hard drive light is continually flashing. I also noticed that the CPU usage went as high as 50% when I was simply viewing a web page. What might be the cause of this? I ran a virus scan with NOD 32 and it came up empty.

Hey, My company developes an enterprise application for close companies. As part of our product, we replace the winlogon shell from explorer to our application main entry, And the windows splash screen to our logo. My question is - is it legal? If not, is there a legal way of doing it - by asking permission from Microsoft or adding a small icon of Microsoft in our logo as well? Thanks alot --sternr

After some inactivity on my Windows XP Pro, instead of the screen saver, I get a dark screen, with the message: "Could not find Macromedia Flash." OK. For some reason, I didn't have it any more. Maybe SP3. So I downloaded it, but I still get the same message.

Win.ini

Discovered an application's (PMI) tails left over from long ago when supposedly it had been deleted. I'm hesitant to play here because they aren't concise yet I'm fairly certain they're all together. Know what happens with "assume" also. Originally, the application was geared to start on boot up. If I wanted to gamble, how would I edit the ini file? Only reason to is if it's being read. If it's being ignored, eh, so what. Thinking it might be part of other ills here I'm hunting. Windows XP SP2

Problem creating User account
by Guest Jackpine- 7 replies
As the computer administrator on my PC, I created a new limited User account. However, when I tried to open up this new account, I got a small window saying Personal Settings. Setting up Internet settings. (Or words to that effect.) An hourglass appeared. This continued for about 5 minutes with no change. I then rebooted the PC and tried to open the new account again, with the same result. Can someone explain why the new account will not set up properly? Thank you. --

I have the shield by my clock which says "updates are ready for your computer". Clicked on it and eventually it said it was for SP3. I canceled out all the panels and now I still have the shield saying I have updates. I'd rather not have SP3 (had d/ld a few months ago and was lucky in that it found errors and didn't take), so how can I get rid of this shield?

How do I change drive letters?
by Guest Moonbarker Osbourne- 3 replies

This mornin', I made a mistake that caused my system to see my usual USB connected external hard drive as the same letter as when I have my camera's SD card plugged into my printer. I've already gone through the pain in the tail of chagin' ev'rything so that all my programs look for "G" instead of "F" when they look for somethin' on the external HD. For future reference, if the external drive letter gets changed by my system again, how do I change it back to what I want it to be?

I am working through a router with one main computer, a wireless laptop, and a second desktop computer. When everything is plugged in, the second desktop computer (which runs Windows XP Home Edition) shows it is connected to the Internet, but when running a browser (in this case Internet Explorer) I get the "The page cannot be displayed" error. I've tried to run an "ipconfig" through the command prompt and I get this error: Windows IP Configuration An internal error occurred: the request is not supported.
