Hi Help! I can't get Acrobat Reader to run. I just uninstalled and then re-installed "Adobe Reader 9" in my Windows XP (SP3) PC. I have a roaming profile (which I hate but apparently I'm stuck with it). I cant get Adobe Reader to even open on its own without an error. The error is: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Rutime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact [blah-blah] - Should I re-install the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library? (If so how the heck do I so that?!) - Or should I download an earlier…

by Guest Robert S- 2 replies

When I double click on a message in the preview pane in OE I get: "There was an error opening this message. An Error has occurred". I get the same message if I try to compose a message. This occurs in all user accounts. If I try to open the Address Book within OE I get "Unable to open the address book. The Address Book may not be installed properly". If its of any help this started after I uninstalled Office 2000 and installed Office 2003. The address book is in the correct location according to HKEYCU/Software/Microsoft/WAB/WAB4/Wab file name. Can anybody help? -- Robert S <robert.spam.me.senseless@gmail.com>

Outlook Express: "Unable to open the Address Book ..." error
by Guest Robert S- 2 replies
I've just started getting this error message when I try to open the Address Book in OE. It occurs on all user accounts: Outlook Express: "Unable to open the Address Book. The Address Book may not be installed properly". When I open up a message by double clicking on it I get "There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred" (Mac-like informativeness). I'm still able to view the message in the preview pane. I get the same message when I try to compose a new message. I can locate the Address Book according to its place in the registry, and it opens normally when I double click on it. Can anybody help here? I've just uninstalled Office 2000 a…

Since SP3, verclsid.exe slowing my computer
by Guest Victor- 7 replies

Since I installed SP3 on my Windows XP SP2 desktop, I've been seeing intermittent and ANNOYING slowdowns of my computer. I'll click a link on IE, or select a menu item from a program, and the mouse cursor will turn to an hourglass while my computer slows. Sysinternal's Process Explorer shows me instances of the program VERCLSID.EXE popping up, slowing my computer. I don't where the hell this program came from - I think it's from SP3 - but it's annoying the living hell out of me. NO, I did NOT install KB908531, this must be a part of SP3. How do I stop this damned program? Do I need to uninstall SP3???

Sleep Mode Problems!
by Guest Dave W- 4 replies

My Computer screen keeps going into Sleep Mode. My power save settings are all correct. The monitor is working fine. So not sure what to try next. One week ago, I installed "Luxor by Mumbo Jumbo" Seems like the problem started then. I have since unistalled Luxor, but the problem is still there. Screen just goes blank for a few seconds, then comes back, then blank, then back... then after awhile, screen goes blank and indicates it is in the powersave mode. pressing a key or moving a mouse does nothing... Only thing I can do is hit the power buttone and reboot. Help Please!

Can not enter my password at bootup
by Guest Fishermun- 7 replies

I have a laptop computer. Running WindowsXP, SP3, all updates current. Yesterday I installed 2 plugins for paintShop Pro, and began using the program as well as the newly installed plugins. Late last night I shut the computer off and went to bed. This afternoon I came home, and turned the computer on. It booted up to the logon screen where you type in your password, But, as I type my password, the cursor does not move, and "no text" is entered. I can not log onto the computer, so I can not do a restore or get into Safe Mode or anything. Seems I am locked out. I also have an external drive that has all my backups on it, but here again, I am locked out of …

startup script problem
by Guest Paolo Francese- 1 reply

I have set a startup script using group policy, the script install the antivirus from a share. On a portable PC with windows XP all works fine when the network cable is plugged, but when I boot it with the network cable unplugged it's stuck for 90 seconds saying "Running startup script...". The others PCs in the domain do not have this problem. I've tried to debug the problem enabling the "Run startup scripts visible" policy. When the network cable is plugged the script window appers. When the network cable is unplugged the script window does not appear. Anyone have any idea? Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell with standard SATA HD (no RAID). I just did a clean install of XP Pro and installed the Recovery Console. Computer boots fine into Windows, but when I try to access the RC I get a BSOD: Unmountable__Boot_Volume 0x000000ED (Ox8A7D34A0, 0xC000014F, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) Any ideas on how to get RC to work?

Lost context menu only for program list
by Guest JClark- 2 replies

Hello Group: Windows XP Pro SP3, all updates This seems peculiar. I added a program which as usual appeared at the end of my list in Start|Programs. I right clicked on one of the programs to sort them by name, but the context menu has disappeared. It's peculiar because the right click context menue is working fine for any other file or folder in Windows Explorer. I ran ShellExView and found nothing peculiar there in terms of disabled items, except perhaps this: There are four items named "column handler" under "type". All four have identical description, size and version numbers but different CLSIDs. Three of the four are disabled. There are no other Mic…

User hives loaded AFTER A REBOOT
by Guest jjjdavidson- 0 replies

(Please note: This isn't a job for UPHClean. It's not a problem with users logging off.) Does anybody know how a user hive can remain loaded in HKEY_USERS even AFTER a Windows reboot (and before users have logged on)? A program running with admin privilege, a spyware scanner, directly loads all the user hives into HKEY_USERS to check registry settings for spyware. Occasionally it fails to unload the hives, and users logging on get the "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile" message. A reboot normally frees up the hives. But I am hearing scattered reports--which I haven't witnessed personally--that user hives are still loaded into HKEY_USE…

Autorun and Application Installation Problems caused by MacDrive
by Guest Richard Hercules- 0 replies

I was unable to install TurboTax on my Windows XP machine and it turned out to be caused by a third party application: MacDrive. MacDrive by Mediafour allows Windows users to read Apple disks but also unknowingly defaults all drives on the machine to be Apple, if a dual format Apple/Windows disk is introduced. This only occasionally causes a problem, but is unlikely to be found, since it generally occurs some months AFTER installation of MacDrive. I went through all the Windows support debugging of checking my Registry autorun settings and updating all my Windows installers. None of this helped. I only found out the culprit was MacDrive when I re-forma…

Is the SP3 update necessary ?
by Guest Roy- 22 replies

Hello Group! Recently my PC notified me about the recent windows update which is about the installation of the SP3 update. As I have heard in the past about the bad performance of PC with such update I am reluctant to just follow the suggestion of the windows update. I would like to know the current consensus of the group that have experience of this particular update…? Is this for the better stability of my WinXP OS or for the worst? Please help as I am in quandary regarding this manner… I don’t believe what Windows is claiming and I want a frank opinion from experienced users… Thanks in Advance! Roy
