Old harddisk with programs in new one
by Guest HDI- 3 replies

Hi, I've got an old windows xp pc and a new windows xp pc. Is it possible to insert the harddisk of the old one in the new one as slave without reinstalling the old one and don't lose the programs (I haven't got the cd's of the program so I can't reinstall it). What I want is when the pc starts up that I got a menu to choose one of the two hardisks. Can I just plug in the old harddisk in the new pc and would it work? Thx

$hf_mig$ Contents: update.exe and spunist.exe
by Guest Duncan Fletcher- 6 replies
Is there any reason not to remove the update.exe that appears in the Update folder in each of the folders in $hf_mig$? I understand the purpose of the folder, but I see no reason Update.exe needs to be there. Ditto for spuninst.exe. Update.exe is 700KB and spuninst.exe is 166KB. Since they exist in each of the 120+ folders in $hf_mig$, they account for over 100MB. Also, now that SP3 is installed, is it necessary to retain those files in $hf_mig$ that predate SP3? Thanks for the help. Duncan

Windowxs XP and ..\WinSxS\ subfolders
by Guest robbio- 2 replies

Hi at all, my problem concerns about the subfolders inside ...\WinSxS\ folder, in particular the "x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b*" folders. These folders have the runtime libraries allowing to run programs, developed with new development environment VS2005, under WindowsXP (....VC90.. for VS2008). When I install for the first time Windows XP, without any service pack, does it contain these folders? that is ..\WinSxS\ and "x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b*" folders? (I installed a fresh copy of WindowsXP with the Service Pack 3 inside it and after the installation the ..\WinSxS\ folder has all subfolder I'm talking about) If not so do t…

Microsoft Office 2003 supposedly not installed???
by Guest Zekintha- 6 replies

This is an update to an older question, so my new question is here, and the background is below it, if that information is useful to anyone in offering advice: I uninstalled Office 2007, and now the computer refuses to recognize that Powerpoint 2003 is installed. That is, if I click on .ppt files, they don't open, and if I try to "Open With...", I can browse for the Powerpoint 2003 .exe file, and it won't open. The only way I can open .ppt files is to open Powerpoint 2003, and then open a file from within the program. Help please? Background (original question): So my computer came with XP-Pro installed, and trial versions of Office 2007. I installed Offi…

Resetting all WinXP Pro Registered File Types to default.
by Guest Raymond Gabites- 8 replies

I have a user that has managed to corrupt most of their File Types in Explorer. As this effects more than one type, I was wondering if there was a way to re-set this list to their default settings (short of re-installing their OS)?

I can access the internet without any problem but when I go to update software, ex. windows, or virus software it says it can't access and theres a problem. I even have tried to download world of war craft it starts to download then its says it can't access the port. I was playing combat arms online with no problems then one day it stopped letting me get to the log in screen, I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. I've disabled firewall to make sure I wasn't getting blocked. I can't figure it out. Internet access and downloads of normal stuff no problem....can anyone help?

Does the XP registry hold Nvidia video card settings?
by Guest beemer- 4 replies
A problem that I share with others is that the Nvidia Control panel fails to open. This was cured when I did a registry fix to enable an older "Classic Control Panel". After a second try to open the Classic version it too will not open. I now cannot change the brightness or contrast of either of my two displays as the control panel when it was working adjusted the levels beyond the display's own manual adjustment. Despite uninstalling, cleaning out old drivers and reinstalling the driver (new and old) I cannot get the Nvidia control panel to open. This is why I am wanting to know if I can "reset" the NVidia to its default through the XP registry?…

setting up the fax
by Guest Carrie- 13 replies

I've tried this before, but never seriously looked into it. I don't use faxing alot, and when I send them I use my Lexmark all in one (printer/scanner) which brings up it's own Wizard. Occasionally someone (my kids) will ask me if I can GET a fax. Which is when I try and set up the one that came with Win XP It says Rockwell fax/data V90 Wants to install, then a box comes up saying to put in the Win XP instal CD. Which I don't have (didn't get from Dell) I've tried to send it to what I think are the installaion files/drivers the i386 file. It says it can't find what it needs there, it's invalid path. What comes up automatically, from previous tries…

Winxp3, at bootup and after the "loading personal settings" is done, there is a 1 minute and 45 second blank screen before the desktop appears. What is the best way to find (log) what process is causing this delay? Starting in safe mode there is only a 8-10 second delay (normal??)
