Starting applications on a maximized window
by Guest Tyler Durden- 2 replies
Some applications can't be started with its windows maximized, requiring a mouse click or keyboard shortcut (that is not always the same, since it changes with the language of the OS). Someone knows of a method, like a small portable freeware application, to create a command line that starts an application maximized? Try to start the Microsoft Computer Management Console maximized (compmgmt.msc). Thanks to everyone!

Check with Task Manager's Processes tab. E.g. press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to enter TM. Disk Scanning & Defragmentation
by Guest Penorama- 15 replies

I've been told during Windows 98 days that it's good to run Scandisk and Defragmentation regularly to keep the computer spick and span. Does it still apply to these days of Windows XP and Vista? As a matter of fact I carry out these maintenance measures every week, but would like to know their relevance in the present day software environment. Thanks.

Install and uninstall of beta/new software - a tip
by Guest Rubicon- 3 replies
Sometimes there are issues involved in the install and uninstall of beta and new software. I bypass all such issues simply by creating an image of my system with Acronis before installing, say, IE 8 Beta 2. If I decide to go back to IE6 on this particular PC, I'd then restore the machine itself to that stored image. Thereby avoiding all uninstall hassles altogether. I run SmartSyncPro everyday to back up Outlook, OutlookExpress, My Documents, Firefox profile and certain other folders. An Acronis image is created every other day besides. I generally keep in store the last three images. Plus the fall-back ones like that mentioned here. I cannot count the …

Microsoft Optional Hardware (Optional) Update
by Guest ulysses hardy- 5 replies

Recently, I selected the update, "SIS-Display-SIS 741", from the subject site and restarted my computer, running WindowsXP Home. At the end of the reboot, a pop-up titled "keyhook.exe - Entry Point Not Found". The enclosed text read: RealKeySting@CSISReg@SAHPAD0H0PAUHKEY__@@K@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library SISBase.dll. Microsoft's Download History indicated the update completed, I found "SIS-Display-SIS 741 in the Device Manager and diabled it. The pop-up error message repeated for several reboots. Finally, I enabled, SIS-Display-SIS 741. A search indicated Keyhook.exe" was located at C:\WINDOWS\system32. It was not readily av…

I've searched Google Groups and this newsgroup and can't find the answer to what should be a very simple problem. In my home network, when I view My Network Places, I see every available share on all computers on the network. I don't want to see all the shares available, I only want to see the computers on the network as I do in Windows 2000 and Vista. My laptop retired last week, so I have retrieved the hard drive and now want to recover the data from it. I have put the drive into a case and plugged it in via the usb ports on my new machine. There were 2 user accounts on the drive, one account I can get into and have recovered everything. The second user account will not allow me any access. Everything I try I get the error message - f:\documents and settings\andies\my documents is not accessible Access is denied. I have tried creating a user account with the same name on the new machine - still denied Booted from the hard drive, still access denied. Can anyone tell me how to get past this…

Activating an extra monitor in XP
by Guest MikeRooke- 3 replies
I'm running XP Home on a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop. I'm trying to allow myself to install a secondary monitor. All the documentation says that by going into Display Properties there should be a Secondary Monitor Icon where I can "extend my Win Desktop onto the monitor". My dialogue box gives me seperate Appearance and Themes Tabs, and no Secondary Monitor icon. This means I can't activate my new monitor or load the drivers. Have I missed something obvious or has XP moved on and left me behind? I would really appreciate some help with this. -- Try to learn something new everyday

windows will not boot, and now will not install
by Guest raygunpk- 2 replies

Ok bear with me as I try to explain this. -There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and it would stay like that forever. -I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an earlier date, and still wouldn't load. -Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to do a diagnostic boot...still no luck. -Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors. -Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an origin…
