No http access from XP Home, all other internet is fine(?)
by Guest jkj2000@gmail.com- 5 replies

All of a sudden I can no longer browse the web with either IE or Firefox on my laptop. I haven't changed any firewall settings on my router, and even at school I cannot use either browser-- this used to not be the case. I can use ftp, smtp and any other internet access protocols on this machine; just not http. Maybe I contracted some malware, and I'm checking that, but is there any XP utility that will let me see if something's blocking http on the machine?

Monitoring UP Time
by Guest mcp6453- 6 replies

A non-profit organization for which I volunteer just received a donation of ten Dell computers with XP. They all have fresh installations. Normally I power up new computers and let them run a while to make sure everything is working as expected. Just now, I think one of them rebooted on its own after running for more than a day. It may have rebooted on its own before now. What utility can I use to monitor the up time such that I can tell if the computer is rebooting? (It does not have bad caps on the motherboard. Plus, it came from a company with a gigantic IT department. Presumably there was nothing wrong with the computer.)

by Guest ZikO- 2 replies

Hello I have a problem with VC++ EE. Sorry if it's very trivial problem but I honestly just have begun with programing in windows. I have made an application in VC++ .NET EE and I would like it to work on every computer not only those which has Visual C++ EE installed. The other computer has installed Framework .NET 3.5 and i have simply copied program from <project folder>\Debug (or Release) and system says: "This application has failed to start because the application confuguration is incorrect. Reinstalling application may fix this problem." What do I need in other this application to work? Regards =)

GoBack vs Restore
by Guest LMO- 11 replies

Aloha all. I have been using GoBack since way before Symantec stole it. I like it, as it simply rolls back my system and drives to before any unfortunate event or virus, etc. Right now I have both GoBack and System Restore running. I realize this is redundant, and wonder which is the better one to keep running. I have hit points with Restore where it is unable to restore to a point. never happened with GoBack. Just curious on this. Any opinions? Thanks.

Windows XP Registry Cleaner
by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 5 replies

If you have a new computer, then you will definitely need a Windows XP registry cleaner. I think the registry itself is not going to need fixing, if you don't ever do anything to your computer. But, once you start installing software, uninstalling software, making shortcuts on your desktop to your favorite programs, and even surfing the internet, you will need a good Windows XP registry cleaner. Let us cover the basics on what the registry files do, and why they are important. The registry files are the files, which tell the computer how a program is supposed to operate. It gives the basic instructions on what the program is suppose to do, and when it is suppose…

Hi Any thoughts about why my PC is suddenly running dead slow? It is running Windows XP Pro (SP3). I last updated it about 20 days ago. And then it started running slow about 2 days ago. I have now installe dall the latest patches but it is still dog-slow. I have various things installed but which I have now EXITED including: Windows Search, Google Desktop, Logmein.com and SpyBot - Search & Destroy. I notice in Windows "Task Manager" that even just after on a cold re- boot, I have 7 copies of "svchost.exe". They are not taking any CPU time though. In fact the CPU is running at about 2-3%. But when I open FireFox, it takes a VERY long time to…

by Guest Tammy- 3 replies

I need help. Yesterday while on the computer, a box popped up on my desktop that says: Warning spyware dected on your computer. Now, I cannot update my virus protection and the only virus scan that it will let me do is the one from Microsoft. I have tried three other sites and cannot get on it. I have managed to get a bunch of spyware off of my computer, but this big box on my desktop will not go away. I am not computer tech savvy, but can follow instructions. Can someone out there help me? I have Windows XP Professional. Thanks!

Task Manager won't start
by Guest Jeff Ingman- 24 replies

I installed a Task Manager replacement utility from PC magazine. It opened and ran slowly so I uninstalled it. But Task Manager has not come back. It does not open with Crl-Alt-Del nor can I right click on the Task Bar to start it. I get nothing when I attempt to start it - no error message... nothing. I'm running XP Pro on a 3 year old Dell XPS. Any quick fixes?

by Guest Laurie Comerford- 1 reply

Hi, I'm wanting to get the All Users and Currently logged in User's Application Data Path. In Windows XP I've found them in the registry at: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\CommonAppData" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\AppData" Is this registry location a reliable source of the folder locations? Does the same registry reading exist in Vista to return the matching Application Data folders for Vista? Regards Laurie Comerford

Why does copying a video file to flash drive save only as audio?
by Guest L'Ecrevisse- 11 replies
Using Windows XP, I have been trying to save a video saved to my HDD to a flash drive. The problem is, when I r/click and select the 'copy' option, it saves it to the flash drive as an audio file. When I r/click and select 'move' it saves it to the flash drive and then plays correctly as a video. Could someone please explain to me what has happened and what I need to do to change whatever has happened to the 'copy' function?

Incremental backing up with XCOPY
by Guest Anthony Buckland- 10 replies

I've been working on a supplementary form of backup (other than my more-or-less regular backups with Acronis True Image of my entire C: partition). The volatile part of my file system is My Documents, into which I've incorporated my Outlook Express storage files and my Address Book. So I've backed this up by straight copying to a thumb drive, which is a very compact and durable way IMHO to carry around a fire/theft backup, and safe since it's password-protected. Now to the incremental part. The technique I've just tried for the first time is to plug in the thumb drive (J:), go to command mode, in C: go to My Documents, in J: go to the corresponding directo…
