IE Script Error
by Guest Barry- 1 reply

Dear all, I have a friends PC, with errors. One of the errors I receive is "Internet Explorer Script Error" However, the pc is not on the net nor is IE open. I tried to get into the Users section under Control Panel and the error popped up and I could do nothing, but restart. At first I thought it was the BT Helper that was the problem, so I had stopped that from working. (AS I believe this uses some form of browser). It did stop the error happening when booting up. Can anyone help please? Barry

XP extremely slow boot up part 2

After being able to get back to the laptop and try it, I tried to boot it in regular mode and then in safe mode and checked the event log. Here are some items from the start up. These bring up a question. Would a bad block make it do this. The "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" error is because a Dlink wireless device is not working in safe mode. Application issues Event Type: Information Event Source: ccSvcHst Event Category: None Event ID: 35 Date: 9/23/2008 Time: 8:24:33 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: LAPTOP Description: The 'ccEvtMgr' service has started. I needed to uninstall SP3 because of problems with a software package that I use daily. After successfully uninstalling SP3 I can not access the internet via IE 7. I am running XP Pro. Any ideas on how to resolve?? Should I try to reinstall SP 3 and if so then what?? As I do need to remove SP3. I have uninstalled SP3 on another machine without this problem.

>I Logon & Get LoGGed OFF<
by Guest CmosDriver- 2 replies

I have run into the ExAcT same problem w/2 machines recently after cleaning malware off of them. BOTH were totally loaded with malware, trojans and SypCraP. After scanning and deleting a friend's computer with Adaware, I then scanned it w/Spybot. It also found a bunch of mess and of course, wasn't able to delete everything until rebooting. After restarting the Dell (behemoth) Demension 4500, I attempted to log into the same account that I used before restarting. - - - - Once i clicked onto the account, it >briefly< attempted to login and then after about 2-3 seconds... it was logging me >OFF<. I didn't even get to see the desktop it happened so…

RUNTIME ERROR?
by Guest its_my_dime- 1 reply

XP SP3. IE 7. I am trying to reinstall an INTEL graphics video driver. Installation gets almost to the end and then fails. Various error messages include "missing file" , "wrong hardware" etc. This is a 4 year old Gateway computer; the driver and graphics card are longer supported. Gateway said to try in safe mode. Safe mode gives a runtime library error. This is well above my pay grade. How do I fix it? Thank you.

Offline Files: "Delete Files" vs "Re-initalize the chache"
by Guest Brendan- 7 replies

The other day i got asked the question as to what the difference in functionality was there between the following two options Offline files: Delete Files and Ctrl + Shift + Delete Files I probably should know this, but unfortunatly i cant seem to find any diffinitive statements. I have found documentation on both options, but they both seem to do the same thing. Delete files is very straight forward: "This method of cleaning up the cache allows you to delete individual files reguardless of where they are lcoated on the network or the folder in which they are contained" Re-initialize of the offline files chache and database: "The offline files…

Cannot Install/Uninstall Certain Programs
by Guest BruisedEggplant- 3 replies

I find myself suddenly unable to uninstall certain programs, even ones that are listed in the Add/Remove Programs menu. There is one game in particular that is not functioning properly, but when I try to remove it, it loads the install shield and the progress bar, then hesitates for a few seconds, then shows a message box stating that the requested maintenance has been performed. No matter what I try, I cannot get these items to re-install either. -- BruisedEggplant An Eggplant Gone Bad...

Desktop items don't appear Desktop Blank
by Guest boe- 1 reply

Hello, I have a PC that is running WIndows XP Pro SP2. It doesn't show any desktop icons. I can try to drag items there but they don't show. I'm just running standard desktop - no active desktop addons. I went and reset it to the standard bliss desktop - no special themes. I've verified there is both a visible user desktop folder with items in it as well as an all user desktop with items showing. I've scanned it two ways for viruses - no viruses. I'm not sure what has changed. Any suggestions on resolving it?

Undocumented Legacy Keys in Text Fields (and Notepad)
by Guest Veli-Pekka Tätilä- 1 reply

Hi, I've discovered the following undocumented keys in Windows edit fields: ctrl+h: delete char (like backspace) ctrl+i: indent a level (like tab) ctrl+(j/m): line break (like enter) ctrl+del: delete till end of line (not delete next word as in RTF fields or editors) ctrl+backspace: insert char 127 (not delete previous word, like in RTF and most editors) Does anyone know the history of the rather Emacs-like ctrl+(h/j) i.e. why are these keys used in Windows while most of the other Unixisms such as ctrlk for kill line aren't? Similarly, what's up with the broekn ctrl+backspace and why doesn't ctrl+del work symmetrically to it? I reckon one source of …

CHKDSK errors
by Guest George_222- 12 replies

Occasionally, and it is only once every 1 to 2 months or so, I get in 'EventLog-System' some 'ftdisk event 57'. This basically says do a chkdsk. If I run a chkdsk I sometimes (not always) get errors fixed like: Recovering orphaned file 'opr01h65 (187185) into directory file '32379' and Recovering orphaned file 'opr01h5w (187182) into directory file '33825' Q1 What do these mean? Where are the 'opr01xx' files from, and where is the 3xxxx directory files that they appear to have been recovered into? If I run chkdsk /f it claims to fix everything, and all is well again, until the next time. Q2 Whats likely to be causing them, how do I locate the actual p…

conflicting versions of drivers during installation setup
by Guest wylbur37- 1 reply

Suppose you were running a SETUP program to install an application that's about two years old. Suppose one of the components (such as a driver) happens to have the same name as one that currently exists on your computer. So this is a situation where an existing (but newer) driver is about to be replaced by an older driver of the same name. Is the operating system smart enough to prevent the newer driver from being clobbered by the incoming (but older) driver? If the answer is yes, how does the system determine which driver is "newer"? Does it go by the timestamp of the file, or is there some coding inside the component that identifies the version? ....
