Gurus, Do any of you have a file on your system called rasphone.pbk? You probably don't if you don't use dial-up networking but I want to take a quick unscientific survey. -- Spin

RE: Volume Control Missing after WinXP Update

RE: Volume Control Missing after WinXP Update I have a similar problem. After an update to my Microsoft Lifecam webcam which took forever to install because it also installed Framework 3 service pack one and something named CardSpace. It didn't let me cancel the installation after I realized I was getting more than I wanted. Why I needed close to 300 MB of update simply to improve my Webcam 1000 I'll never know. On reboot, the sound icon was gone. I went to Control Panel/Sound and restored it to the tray. This morning on bootup, it was missing again. The item is still checked to "show in tray," clicking on the Windows System file, sndvol32.exe, …

Shortcuts, Static or Dynamic?
by Guest MJ- 7 replies
Recently I have been SURPRISED that shortcuts to applications and files seem to have become "dynamic" in the sense that if you rename the target file the shortcut picks up the new name. In the past, shortcuts were static, and if you changed the name of the target you needed to revist the short cuts. The problem is that we are moving many of our files/applications from an older server to a new server location and renaming the old files it show that they have been copied to the new location. With static shortcut targets, renaming the files "BROKE" the link and will cause the user to think, but with the shortcuts picking up the name change the link is not …

1/2 hour after starting computer briefly freezes
by Guest Don- 2 replies
Each time I start my computer (from shut off / standby or hybernate), approximately 1/2 hour later it freezes up for about 15 minutes. Screen freezes, hour glass rotates, can't do anything with it...doesn't matter if I'm online or off. After 15 minutes everything returns to exactly where I was when it happened (I lose no information) & I can go on doing what I was doing. Annoying & would like to solve it if anyone has experienced this too.

Error 1618 or Error 1500 "Installation already in progress"
by Guest bokee88- 8 replies

Received a replacement phone today. Several of the items that I need to install start with a .exe on the Laptop, they then run a cab file on the phone itself. however, everytime I run one of the .exe files I get an error saying there is something else that hasn't finished installing. I have rebooted 3 times. No change. I go to the task manager and I notice there are 2 msiexec's running at all times. I kill them and they immediately reappear. I have Google searched for fixes and i have tried every one i found (changing registry keys for the installer, using msconfig to stop services, deleting the Temp files, etc.). I am at a loss. I don't know if …

Yet another "No Sound" problem
by Guest Gray Brown- 4 replies

I’m sorry, I’m almost certain you guys have got to be tired of hearing this: I’m using a Gateway 5028 with AMD Athlon 64 Processor and running the Media Center Windows XP version 2002 with service pack 3. After not scanning my computer for over a month (I hope I never do that again!) my computer picked up lots of viral infections. Without thinking, I had my antivirus program get rid of them even though it warned that doing so might make the computer unstable because of the files infected. Almost immediately my computer began acting up (programs not responding, etc.) so I did a system restore with backup. During the process I got a RUN DLL error mes…

backup causes BSOD
by Guest Virgilijus- 7 replies

I have been using Retrospect for quite some time with no problems. Recently I upgraded the hard drive to a larger drive and now Retrospect abends with a BSOD when it starts. After trying to fix the problem with them, it was figured out that the Volume Shadow Copy is the culprit. Why would VSC start causing problems just because I changed to a larger hard drive??? I am running win-xp sp3.

Uninstalling IE7 before installing XP SP3
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 16 replies

I am planning to install the SP3 automatic update. I use Firefox as my default browser but I do have IE7 installed in case I need it in an unforeseen circumstance. I saw where IE7 can't be uninstalled after installing SP3. Question: Is it good practice to uninstall IE7 before updating XP to SP3 -- and then reinstalling IE7? In Add/remove programs, I get a long list of programs that might not work after uninstalling IE7 because they were installed after. Most are windows updates and I don't have any idea what they do. Any Advice? Stan Hilliard
