Permissions Question.
by Guest MJ- 0 replies

I have several directories under my web root. These directories are tied to virtual dirs. All is well and there are no issues, however when I delete files within a certain directory (not withstanding that it is a virtual dir), the virtual dir display in mmc show a stop sign. AND, the dir security settings show that USERS has FC, no one else. If I then change the perms on this particular dir to inherit and prop al the way down, the stop sign disappears and the appropriate groups have the correct perms in the dialog. As suggested, there is no harm and everything seems to be fine. My question is, why do the permissions disappear and only the local US…

Internet Explorer 7
by Guest Tom- 20 replies

I have downloaded Internet Explorer 7,but when I open it, I get a screen asking me for required settings, for me to choose either to keep my current default search provider, or to let me select from a list of other search providers. When I pick the first option, and click "save your settings", it immediately comes up with"settings were not able to be saved successfully". I tried reloading IE 7, but get the same thing. This means I do not have a home page. I can use IE 7 normally after this, but it's driving me nuts, so any ideas?

When I open My Computer or Windows Explorer, my CDR drive D: is not shown. It shows up in device manager as enabled and operating correctly. If a disk is put in, the drive will spin up and read, but no info is displayed. If a disk such as windows setup is inserted in the drive and the computer is restarted, it will boot the system from the cdr and it properly shows up on the display. How do I get windows to recognize the drive. I have downloaded a new driver from microsoft and installed it with no difference. the drive works properly in another computer. The drive also shows up in the BIOS. -- wcampbell2

CoStar Label Printer hook-up
by Guest Antares 531- 3 replies

Last fall I built a new computer using a Gigabyte S-Series GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, two DDR2 one GB 800 MHz memory chips, and a Western Digital 500 GB SATA hard drive. I installed Windows XP Pro and updated it to SP3. All works very well and I have no complaints at all....except that I can not connect my old CoStar XL Turbo Model No. 90344 label printer. This label printer's connection cable has a parallel and a serial connector at the computer end but this motherboard has no provisions for either of these connectors. What is the best approach to resolving this problem...new USB label printer...USB to serial converter...para…

I have a friend who I gave a Dell Laptop to and she changed her password and now has forgotten it...other than reformatting and putting on again her original XP disk, does she have any other way of getting to reset her password. She of course did not leave a hint as she was going to remember the phrase. Any ideas? I told her to sleep on it over night and a good change the phrase will come back to her. Am I overlooking something obvious. She has her original installation XP disk. Bob

Corrupt WIA (WINDOWS IMAGE ACQUISITION)
by Guest Stockmoose16- 6 replies
Hello, I installed Windows XP PRO sp 2 on my computer a few months ago. During the install, the computer kept hanging on the WIA (windows Image Acquisition) drivers. I eventually skipped those files, hoping they wouldn't be too important. Unfortunately, I just purchased a digital camera that requires WIA to run properly To rectify the problem, I borrowed a friend's XP sp 2 disc, hoping it would be more reliable than my disc. I performed a repair install, but when the computer rebooted, WIA was still missing from the system. When I go into "services" and double-click on WIA, I get the message, "Unable to open service Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) for r…

Harddisk after power failure
by Guest Stu- 9 replies

I experienced some power interuptions at my home and now my main computer doesn't boot up (I'm using the laptop now). It gets to the piont where the Wondows Logo is on the screen with the moving bar under it. About 10 seconds into that, it shuts off and starts over. I disconected all the external hardware (printers, scanner, modem, etc.). Still nothing. I attempted to reload windows XPpro from the CD and it went through the start of the setup routine, loading files. If I press enter to set up XP, all it shows is a partition1 [unknown] of 131072 mb. ( I don't remember the size of my hard drive, but I know it's around 40gig). If I press enter, it wants me to…

Re: XP - multiple installations with same licence?
by Guest James from Canberra- 0 replies

Re: XP - multiple installations with same licence? I was looking through my old postings and found this one. I may as well give an update. I never did install the second copy of XP. The video card was second hand, and the seller explained it was my problem -it worked OK under SP1. The $350 (second hand!) video capture card sat in its box waiting for new SP2 drivers. They never happened. Life moved on. I bought a USB video capture box. It works fine. I gave the capture card to a friend who uses Linux on the of-chance there are Linux drivers for it. It still leaved a bad taste in my mouth. That was a lot of money. "HeyBub" wrote: > Jam…

User questions?
by Guest Pheasant PluckerĀ®- 3 replies

Hi there, Has the behaviour of creating users when installing XP changed somewhere along the line? I mean *I think* when installing XP some time ago I used to setup without first creating a user - everything was under Administrator but the last few times when installing XP I was unable to proceed without first creating a user other than one called Administrator...or am I going mad? ;^) Secondly, and probably connected to the above I now have a selection of computers on my home network with various user names, Administrator, Admin, my own name etc. and it is getting more than a little confusing when I want to access a machine over the network having …

MP3 Players and Viruses
by Guest lindalbo- 9 replies

We have 2 MP3 players, an iRiver IFP 795, and a newly purchased Sansa Fuze. We use 2 different computers, both with Windows XP Pro, one has Norton Anti-virus, and one has BitDefender Anti-virus version 10. Neither one will give us an option to scan our MP3 players. After dealing with viruses and cleaning them up twice, we discovered that the viruses evidently were still lurking on the Sansa Fuze. After plugging it in again, I once again had the same viruses on my computer. We don't know what the source of the viruses was. But since the Fuze was still new enough, the store replaced it. Our question - since it seems that they are capable of becoming …
