Windows Update nearly kills my computer
by Guest TrevorJ- 15 replies

I have XP SP3 installed and when (I think it's) Windows update accesses the internet just after startup, the rest of the computer almost comes to a standstill. If I start Task manager > Processes one of the several svchost.exe is taking 98-99% CPU time for about anything up to 4 mins after startup. I have 'Download updates and let me choose..' set. If I select 'Turn off Automatic Updates' my computer starts normally. This has developed lately, but I cannot deffinitely associate it with the installation of SP3. System is Athlon 3200, 1GB ram big HD and a 6Meg broadband connection. Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Internet connectivity before XP password prompt?
by Guest Alf- 3 replies
I access my compter remotely and use an XP password to provide at least minimal security. If there is a power outage, I have the BIOS set to start the computer when power is restored. I also use a program to force a reboot if a program hangs which results in my not being able to access it. When it reboots, either after a power outage or a forced reboot, it stops at the password prompt before it loads Internet conectivity, which means that I can't access it remotely. Is there any way to get it to load Internet connectivity BEFORE the password prompt? TIA. -- --------------------------------- --- -- - Posted with NewsLeecher v3.91 Beta 2 Web @ http://www.ne…

Re: synchronize windows xp clock I have had this problem for years! Courtney's answer was so totally simple and IT WORKED! Microsoft did not have a working answer in the multitude of places I looked. Microsoft should send out an "all points bulletin" to all the frustrated users, giving Courtney credit and a monetary reward. -- Buck in Lees Summit, MO "Courtney" wrote: > I solved the problem by going to another time server: tick.usnogps.navy.mil. > > courtney sends.... > > > Now & Forever wrote: > > I've got similar problems. HP dc7800 unable to wake using USB mouse
by Guest fatal.lordes@gmail.com- 1 reply

Hi I have a very frustrating issue. I've got a HP dc7800 which I would like to be able to wake from sleep using a USB mouse - It's just a standard two button scroll mouse that came with the PC, nothing fancy. It's running Win XP Pro. I've looked at both the mouse and usb properties in control panel and device manager and nowhere is there any option to tick to say "use this device to wake from sleep" or similar. I've also looked in the BIOS and theres nothing there either. Infact the only things mentioned in the BIOS under the Power option (but I've looked in other areas, too) are: Runtime Power Management - Enabled Idle Power Savings - Extended ACPI S…

Getting log files for a single programme...
by Guest Sonnich Jensen- 0 replies
Hi all! We have problems with a programme, which at one customers site crashes. It has its own logfile, but that does not tell us much. I recall win98 having separate log files for each executed prg, which could be usefull now. The prg just dies (closes without anything so they say) and the *.evt files and our logfiles does not tell anything. The only thing I can see is that our "end marker" is missing, but our "start marker" is there, some minutes after the last action (which is normal action), so we are missing that in between. As I understand it, there is not even a window asking "this prg needs to close". Can I get other logfiles, as I could on W98…

I have the license sticker on the PC, which CD should I use?
by Guest Gianni- 2 replies
An _OLD_ Fujitsu Siemens PC in my office has two licenses sticked on it. One is a windows 2000 Professional OEM which is actually installed. The other is an XP-Professional; apparently a Retail one. (there are no OEM markings on the sticker). The sticker is different than any other on the microsoft "how to tell" site, but I think it is genuine. The code on the sticker (VFGQ3-BC9PC-TPFQP-TPKTX-4J4W6) won't work with any media I tried. The original media is lost and Fujitsu won't replace it anymore. Can you tell me which media do I need ad if I can get it from Microsoft EMEA? Can you also tell me if this code will allow the upgrade of win2000 or if I ne…

Adjusting Start menu Size
by Guest Danger_Duck- 3 replies
I'm not sure what the name is, but I'll describe it the best I can. When I click Start->All Programs, a three columned menu pops up on my computer. Now, I feel like that these three columns are too wide, and the icons are okay, but it would be nice if they were smaller too-that is, so that if they were downsized all the program shortcuts could fit on 2 rather than three rows. Where do I adjust the settings for width and height of this menu and what is it called? I didn't find anything in Right click->properties of the start menu. Oh, and also, in the bottom right corner (taskbar?) many applications load up on startup. So many, in fact, tha…

Accessibility using NNPT based Newsgroups. 1 2
by Guest Ibex- 37 replies

My OS is WinXP Pro SP3. I reside in a less developed part of SEAsia. I used to be on a dial-up connection but about 9 months ago changed Internet Service Provider (ISP) who is providing me now with an ADSL connection of variable speed. Since about 3 weeks or so, all of a sudden I am unable downloading/sending messages from various NNPT based Newsgroups. But accessing (browsing) the Internet and e-mail facilities is not a problem at all. The ISP technicians came to my place 3 times but could not find the problem, in fact they knew little about Newsgroups. They finally suggested replacing the router which was provided by the ISP. Well, I purchased a 'Lin…

Windows uses 4 GB? Really?
by Guest Canyon- 13 replies

I’ve done a lot of research regarding this issue and frankly I’m getting a migraine in the heat of the Southern Oregon 110 degree days! So I quit!!! I bought 4 GB of RAM because I thought it would speed up my system a bit. My motherboard happily stated in its manual that it supports 4 GB of RAM. This crazy issue regarding more than 2 GB of RAM wasn’t readily available I had no idea about it. So… I happily bought 4 GB of RAM and was proud of it! My system seemed to boot a bit faster. Microsoft Office seemed to load a bit faster. Games seemed to run even just a tad faster. I was happy though not ecstatic. But I was shocked when I noticed that My Computer/Pro…

Mapped drive showing *NT5CSC file system
by Guest Ken G.- 1 reply

I have a desktop running xp pro and NTFS file system and a laptop running XP MCE and Fat32 file system in a network. The desktop sees the mapped drive on the laptop as always disconnected and unavailable to connect and with a file system called *NT5CSC. I believe the different file systems are not a problem in a network, so why is the mapped drive on the laptop always disconnected, and where did that file system come from?

First, I apologize for cross-posting, but didn't realize I was in the "Media Center" forum before I hit post. So, here it is... ---------- Windows XP Home SP2 Broadband Internet I'm setting up a Windows XP Home computer. I have several users on already and all is working just fine and dandy. My issue is this...I would like to enable the Guest account, but can't figure out how to get internet working under that account. So, I figured I'd just create a new user with admin access and simply restrict that individual user to suit my needs. However, as there is no group policy editor, I can't figure out how to do that. Any ideas? Thanx.

I'm running xp pro svc pk 2, on a standalone and it appears that I am hosting a domain that I can't admin. I cannot download, update, install, etc. When I try to update I'm told I don't have admin permission to do so. I cannot get this out. My whole system is running on logs and manifests and my bios and root have been changed. Help me please! I've been working on this for a while, Seagate (my harddrive manf) seems to think that somebody with a wireless router took over my sys. Any solutions? Advice? I thank you in advance for any assist you might provide. kind regards Jean

howto get key window robber/thief?
by Guest Philipp Ott, Wien- 1 reply

Hello! I got a strange phenomen running wild on 2 PCs. PC#1 is a real PC (XP up2date, with some Norton AV guard running) and the PC#2 is a virtual (vmware) PC (xp up2date as well, with AntiVir protected). PC#1 uses remote desktop to work on PC#2. So far all is fine and pink. However, often it happens that when people work remote on PC#2 keys get swallowd invisibly and the foreground window is lost, and then a split-second later reactivated. For example: you type a sentence in Word and suddenly the blue title bar starts to flicker blue/gray - and while you continue typing every other character is lost (due to the fact that Word is no longer the keywindo…

Profiles Loading Slow - Need help with advanced logging
by Guest Luke- 1 reply

Note: Not sure where to post this, but I've also. posted under server 2003 with no response. I'm using Mandatory profiles on PC's in one of my labs on Server 2003 network. The profiles load very slow and I can't figure out why. I don't see anything abnormal in the event viewer and was curious of other ways to do some logging. When I log on, the "Loading your personal settings" is very quick < 5 seconds "Applying your personal setting" is the slow part >60 seconds Logging off also takes significant time also. "Logging off" >40 seconds "Saving settings" <5 seconds The reason I believe this isn't normal is because I have other PC…
