System Restore Questions (3)
by Guest JCB- 3 replies

1) Does System Restore make a copy of all of the same files/settings as the System State? In other words, if a System State backup (Ntbackup.exe) were made does the resultant .bkf file have all of the same information as a System Restore point? If not, what are the differences between the two? 2) System Restore points are linked such that if one somehow becomes corrupt, all of them are useless. Is this because the initial point is a "Full" snapshot of the system and subsequent ones are "Incremental"? 3) Between a System Restore point or an Ntbackup of the System State, is one preferable to ensure roll-back capability in the aftermath of undesirable …

Re-routing spool files

This is gonna be a strange one Guys Thing is, I'd like to use my favourite wordprocessor, Lotus' AmiPro from way back in 1992. Does all the things that Word does and more, all at a fraction of the overheads. Unfortunately though, the idea of USB was just a gleam in some developer's eye at the time, so when wanting hard-copy, the program looks for either LPT1 or a COM port. for some reason, in the printer set-up within the program, it reports the printer connected to Ne02 (whatever that means) and printing documents brings up the message "couldn't open spool file" and bizzarely, my realtime virus protection pops up simultanuously with the message it has bl…

how to "re"-activate XP Home
by Guest RJK- 7 replies

Since moving to a new system box, and reactivating my XP Home ed. in it, a couple of months have gone by, and my "old" / relegated system box has been out if use and just sat there doing not much - just waiting to be zero-filled, ...and now instead of finally getting around to that, I would like to let a friend have it. So, he will be relegating his "old" system box, and I want to get his licensed copy of XP Home ed. (poss. SP2) into my old system box for him, if you see what I mean, ...which would of course save me a significant amount of time having to reinstall from scratch, e.g. if I could "repair install". If I run a XP repair in my old system box…

Cached File Behavior
by Guest Kevin Nechodom- 1 reply

I am running Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003 SP2. In my startup script, I have a batch file that copies an Access MDB file from a network share to my local file system. Because it uses Oracle, I turn the Read-Only flag off, copy the file, then turn the flag back on. It appears to be holding the previous copy of the file, even though it shows the fileinfo of the new file. If I manually delete the file, when I refresh, it shows the older file with its older fileinfo. If I delete again, it seems to to work, and the copy is successful. I thought it might have something to do with the Indexing Service, but I turned it off, and I continue to have the same…

Stress Testing on Windows XP Professional

Hello, I need to stress test one of the new computers that I built. It is running Windows XP Professional SP2 and the user is complaining of slowness after it has been up for several days. It has 2GB of RAM so I wouldn't think it'd be a big issue. Can anyone recommend some free programs that can perform CPU/RAM/Disk/ Etc... benchmarks and stress tests? Thank you. Sincerely, -Richard

I am using Windows XP Home SP2 and have a problem when opening one specific program - Regseeker I get the following message: Windows - No Disk Exception Processing Message c0000013 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c The Options are: Cancel; Try Again; Continue. And, it does no good to click on any of them. I have discovered that if I continue to Click "Cancel," this warning box will finally go away and the program will open. I have tried to search for information but could not find anything which helped me. (partly because I didn't really understand what I was reading Any information on how I can stop this would be appreciated. - - - - Dave

Can not remove Internet Connection Sharing with Windows Mobile Device
by Guest Eric.E.Swanson@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hello, I used to share the connection that I received on my laptop's WiFi to my local lan; this allowed me to get a network connection on my Desktop without installing a wifi card in it. However, I've recently have not had a need for this setup. I disabled ICS by deselecting "Allow users to use this connection..." in the WLAN properites page. I've also removed the static IP from my Local Lan 1. But now I have a Window's Mobile device (Local Lan 2 -- HTC Mogul) that I use as a modem. However, when I use this device, the IP address that the laptop pulls from the Mogul is 192.168.0.*, with a 192.168.0.1 gateway and a Comcast DNS server (the Mobile device …

Windows XP Activation - VMware Fusion and Boot Camp
by Guest Macnlos- 2 replies

I have a full purchased copy of Windows XP from Microsoft that I was using on a real PC. That PC is now gone and I have purchased a new Intel iMac. I have installed Windows XP in a dual boot mode using Apple's Boot Camp and activation works fine. I purchased a copy of VMware's Fusion for the Mac and what I'm doing is using this product to virtualize the partition that Boot Camp uses. I'm not installing Windows XP twice. I can either start the partition using Boot Camp or I can start the same partition using VMware Fusion while my Mac is running. The problem is that VMware implements its own hardware so Windows thinks it's on a new machine. So if…

.dat files
by Guest Patrick- 3 replies

Hello: Need a little help... Whenever I have a problem with a kicked-back email, I am provided with .dat file, for example a ATT00128.dat. I have gone to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types but I am unable to find a .dat file, therefore I am unable to open the file. I'm currently having a problem with email and would like to be able to read that file in order to provide whatever info is contained in it to tech support. Or, is there some reason why I shouldn't be opening a .dat file? For some reason I am drawing a blank... could you be so kind as to provide me with direction -- what I need to do in order to read these files, or, if I shoul…

What is the effect of the /3GB switch on physical memory?
by Guest jeff.burbank- 6 replies

I know this topic has been touched on several times before, but i was looking for some fresh information. I work in tech support for an Autodesk reseller. One of the products we support is a RAM thirsty application called Revit. In one of our recent support cases, Autodesk suggested that we have a client upgrade to 4GB of ram and enable the 3GB Switch. i have been doing research into the 3GB switch, and have been unable to determine what the effect of the 3GB switch is on PHYSICAL memory, all the documentation i have found details what the 3GB switch does for VIRTUAL memory. So my question is two fold, 1. How does 32 Bit Windows handle 4GB of ram…
