Hi Can WinXP's built-in FTP client provide a way to quickly transfer all files in a directory? For example: put *.* would be expected to upload all files in current local directory into current remote directory. And how about transfering a directory together with all its contents?

Windows XP Pro with SP1a product key too old?
by Guest David- 2 replies
Hi! Not so long ago, my teacher signed us up for the ELMS program that allows you to get a new copy of windows. Unfortunately, I lost the cd she had given me. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but she gave me the cd of 'Windows XP Professional with SP1a'. I can't anyone who might have this exact version of the installation disk that will work with my cd key I was given by Microsoft. So, my question is: Can I use my Windows XP Pro with SP1a product key by using a SP2 installation cd? If not, is there a way to contact microsoft to maybe upgrade my current cd key with one that will work? Thank you in advance!

Explorer showing partitions that should be hidden.
by Guest Emerald Saint- 4 replies

This is a LONG post - please excuse. . . . .. I routinely use GHOST 2003 to write a back up copy of my XP working partition to other partitions on the same HD and also to a partition on a second HD. In conjunction with that back up process, I keep things hidden from my working XP system by changing 'system bytes' in the partition table, or in some situations by changing the BIOS setting for the second HD to 'Not Installed'. To make everything work the way I want, I may also need to I hand edit BOOT.INI and the 'Mounted Devices' registry key. I've been doing this for years with no problem - until just recently when my system started working differentl…

Minimized Applications
by Guest Curt Christianson- 1 reply

A very good even all, This may qualify as the *stupidest* question asked in this group. Way back in my WFW 3.11 days, people would tell me that minimizing an app to the task bar required far less resources than if simply left full-screen, and perhaps switching between maximized spplications. I'm embarassed to say, but *I* certainly don't know. IF this is indeed true, would it be to my advantage on this old machine to do just that? Just in case someone would like the vitals on this box, here they go: Monday October, 08, 2007 11:06 PM [ Windows ] Version = XP Professional SP 2 Installation Date & Time = 07 / 04 / 2007 11:30:36 Curre…

Just checked some items saved in my documents and lots of the icons have changed but the saved documents per these diff. icons are still readable/openable and says their " photoshop images" -this is what they should be with the photoshop icon being displayed. Many are showing up as zone alarm or ad aware icons, just recently added ad aware. any ideas how I can get them back to where I can readily id them and/or what causes this to happen?

How to invalidate licenses on stolen computer
by Guest Jeff Hill- 7 replies
Is there any way I can have Microsoft invaldate the licences for XP and Office on a computer that was stolen? Ideally I'd like to be able to locate the machine, but at least I don't want the thief (or his buyer) to be able to get support or updates. Thanks,

Removing Norton
by Guest ms- 8 replies

I want to totally remove all references to Norton or Symantec from the hard drive on this used machine. Norton (System Works?) had apparently been partially uninstalled, as it does not appear in Add/Remove, not in Start Menu Programs. But in Search, there are Norton files all over the hard drive, including Norton Antivirus. Based on the above where it does not show, is it safe to just delete all Norton entries, and go into registry and delete all Norton keys? ms

Powerdesk 6 Filefinder problem
by Guest aaronep@pacbell.net- 1 reply

I have Windows XP with SP2, Powerdesk Pro #6. I have installed and have been using the File Finder function of Powerdesk without problems until yesterday. Now when I attempt to search for a file using Filefinder, after accessing TOOLS, FILEFINDER, and then typing in the name of the file I am searching for, the program initiates the search, and then, & this is what is puzzling, after finding the file, it shows the file name and location for the briefest of a second on the screen, and then quickly reverts back to the original Powerdesk window. I am unable, therefore , to now access the searched file. Does anyone know what is causing this? Am I ziggi…

Upgrade XP Home OEM to Retail version of XP Pro
by Guest Geoff R- 15 replies

I have a OEM version of home on my PC, and recently, the Motherboard fried due to a problem with the PSU. I learned that the HDD cannot boot up on another machine via say USB unless the chipset is identical to that which XP was originally installed on. Eventually I managed to source a direct MoBo replacement and all is well again (at the moment)! I am now slightly bothered that if I lose the MoBo again I am unable to access everything on the HDD including installed programmes so........ If I upgrade the OEM version with a retail UPGRADE version of Professional can it then be booted up in another PC either as an installed HDD or via USB without any problem…

Where is "Boot.ini"?
by Guest Don J- 3 replies

I;ve got a program called "Restart" that uses "Boot.ini". At the moment it can't find it, so it does't work. For some 12 months it has been working fine. I do a search over all partitions for "Boot.ini", and nothing is found When I do a search with "Ransack" I do find it. It is located on a crazy partition, "Drive I": I am usmg an HP computer and Drive I: contains some presently unused files that came with the computer. The directory has not been used for as long as I have had the computer. If I use "Windows Explorer" to do a search for "Boot.ini" on Drive I: I can't find it How do I make "Boot.ini" available to "Restart"? …
