Explorer issues

XP Pro. used machine, the OS looks like a original default setup. I used XP for about 2 hours, so a few basic questions: I have selected Show all folders 1.In Explorer, even though I selected Details in View, and no partitions, I don't see the Desktop icon. Also, I don't see the Recycle Bin. I want to drag a shortcut to the Desktop, see no way to do it if I can't see it in Explorer. 2. In Explorer, opening Windows folders, I don't see the Start Menu. Where is it? 3. In Device Manager, XP Pro is listed as Version 2002. Did XP Pro have different versions? ms

Re: Screen flipped sideways - update
by Guest Steve H- 1 reply

Re: Screen flipped sideways - update Thread followers may remember I found my screen would not flip sideways using the ctrl alt up etc. Following up, I found that we had updated our graphics card driver, but this had been to a version with a glitch which prevented some of the monitor configuration settings showing ('Can't find requested string'). Correcting the update, I then found that I had a 180 degree rotate with the up/down arrows, but oddly, the left and right rotate options remained greyed out. Turned out, that, following earlier advice to maximise the screen refresh rate as better for the eyes, I had changed this to 75Hz. Changing it back …

'Can't find requested string' ?
by Guest spamlet- 1 reply

All right: so what is the point of XP(Pro) telling me this without telling me what string it is looking for?! There is an icon which I do not recognize in the Control panel - sort of a blue lozenge - alongside which is 'Can't find requested string'. A similar symbol appears with the same epithet on one of the Display/Properties/Advanced tabs. 'Can't find requested string' also appears three times in the right click screen dialogue. The advanced tab version seemed to be monitor details, so I reloaded the monitor driver, but this has made no difference. How do I trace these faults and correct them? Thanks in advance, S

Windows browsing Issue
by Guest hollisorama- 1 reply

I have a client who had a severe virus infection last week. I ran AVG AntiMalware edition and it found many files that it wanted to put in the virus vault and could not repair. Many of the infected files were from the system32 folder. Because of experience with this type of infection, I recommended that my customer have me use the computer manufacturer's factory restore feature to reset the computer back to factory. He declined that option and wanted me to go ahead with the cleaning knowing that there could be resulting errors in the OS. When I finished, some of the issues he was having were resolved but there were new issues. He would get messages a…

Reclaim a partition?
by Guest Tony Meloche- 12 replies

I purchased Acronis TruImage today, and things didn't go well after installation and first attempt at a backup, so I decided to start over from scratch. I removed Acronis successfully, and System Restore took me back to yesterday's settings fine, but SysRestore will not,of course, give me back the partition I created. Is there a way to return the hard drive to "before Acronis"? The program comes highly recommended by many of the MVP's, and it's perfect for what I want, but I think I'll really woodshed the User Guide before trying it again. Thank you for any help! Anybody come across this weird defragmenting situation?
by Guest monty1945@lycos.com- 3 replies

I defragmented two computer, both have the old kind of hard drives, which are both 20 gig. The older computer, which is P2, 400 MgHz, with less RAM, defragments faster than the newer one, which is P3, 700 MgHz. Both are XP Pro SP2. I defragmented the more powerful computer, then spent a couple of hours on it, but didn't do anything different than I do on the other computer, then I defragmented again, and it took longer to do than the less powerful computer, even though I spent a lot more time on it, and certainly did more. Is it possible that the ways the files are organized on the more powerful computer makes it more susceptible to file fragmenting, and if so…
