Main reasons of Slow XP startup - Best tweaks?
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 8 replies

Hello, Although my startup programs/services/hardware configs are the same, day by day the start up process of XP becomes extremely slower than the first day it was installed. What are the best XP tweaking websites and the most effective tweaks? There are some but i don't know which websites and tweaks are the most popular and efficent. Is it about system restore points, "current control sets", registry changes, desktop icons.... What? Thanks...

cant uninstall
by Guest Dan Cardin- 3 replies

pretty much since before a certain point(i dunno the exact point...maybe a month and a hlaf ago) i cant uninstall things. if something was installed before that point i cant uninstall it. I have quite a few things that take up a lot of memory that i cant uninstall. First it was just not showing the uninstall options for programs on the start menu(for example-i have photoshop and there is no uninstall photoshop exe). Then i tried uninstalling things from the "add or remove programs" icon in the control panel. That worked for a while then somethign changed(example-photoshop cs3 extended was one item in the list on "add or remove programs" now it is over 10 a…

Partition full - but it is not
by Guest Heinrich Wolf- 9 replies

Hi Between 2 pc's I want to switch images of the system partition, i.e. copy the notebook's system partition image (4-5GB) to the desktop. The transfer by Windows Explorer progresses as expected, but towards the end I allways get the msg. "Volume full", in spite of some 20GB free space in the receiving partition. I tried it both ways: desktop fetching from notebook and notebook sending to desktop - no way. Most remarkable: the other way aroud - transferring an image from desktop to notebook - it works flawlessly. Any suggestions? TIA Heinrich Wolf

Hi. I wanted to set up a guest account to enhance security when others ask to use my PC. I have Windows XP Home SP2 installed on a Pentium 3 PC. I turned on the guest account and it somehow corrupted the NTUSER.DAT file which I was able to restore using Windows Disk Checker. The file had developed bad sectors which WDC fixed. While the file was corrupted it threw away my user profile - I have the administrator account. Has anyone had this problem and if son, how did you fix it? Thanks.

I have a PC that is going into Standby even when all of it's power option have been set to never and "Always On". Hibernation is also disabled. The monitor shuts off but as soon as I wiggle the mouse it comes back on. The unit is not on the internet, and is not part of a domain. I am completely perplexed. Can anyone help?

Force programs to run only in memory?
by Guest oystlars@gmail.com- 6 replies
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to force programs to run and stay in the RAM? Situation: Sitting in the library reading, but I need access to my computer dictionary (Clue 6.4 program). But; that is really the only program I need, and the harddrive makes considerable noise (and uses a lot of battery) when running. So: - Is it possible to force programs into and run from RAM? And turn harddrive off? - I have no CD-drive so running a live-cd isn't an option. Thanks. Øystein, Norway.

Hard disk not turning off when plugged in despite power options set accordingly
by Guest gerhard.miller@gmail.com- 7 replies

I am setting "Turn off hard disks" when "plugged in" to "3 minutes" in power options. Problem: Hard drive never turns off -- only when system goes into standby (obviously it turns off then). Further background below. Any idea what might cause disk activity? Any idea how else to force the harddrive to spin down and stay off until I access the server? Thanks for any and all pointers. -Gerhard Further Background: =============== * want for the laptop to act as my music server, i.e. be always available and on when required, but spin down harddisk to consume less energy and prevent harddrive from failure for longer time period (since I only listen to…

Running WinXP Pro SP2 on Pent4 1.7GHz 512 MB RAM. System keeps on an un-ending re-boot loop. LBC does not work, however SafeBoot w/Network goes well. In that mode it allows me to activate all s'wares even burn CD's... Amazing ! I ran the Repair Console, changing both Make Boot adn MakeMBR, same problem remains. Would anyone have had similar experience and wld like to share how to overcome this annoying situation. Thanks a lot.

firewall popup warning, but firewall is ENABLED!
by Guest Ogg- 5 replies
I always get a firewall warning popup even though the firewall (via System Security) clearly indicates that the firewall is on. I am using dialup for internet. The warning popop only occurs after I boot up the computer and use the dialup service the FIRST time. Until the popup actually displays, the dialup session stalls and doesn't proceed. After the popup balloon has reported "no firewall", only then the dialup proceeds. What could be causing this problem, and can it be fixed?

taskbar looks strange and speaker was deleted/disabled overnight..
by Guest colneriver- 1 reply

Hi. I turned on the computer this mornig, and I found the task bar at the bottom looked strange and white. The start button looked smaller. My speaker disappeared too... I didn't do anything new yesterday. I am wondering why this happened... I did Norton scan and there was no problems found. Eventually, I managed to do the system restore. Now the task bar looks as before. The speaker cam back too. I am not very computer litelate, and this kind of thing/sudden unexplained change spooks me... Does this has anything to do with recent Office 2003 update ??? That is the last change my computer had. Thank you for amy comments and help !

Win XP 802.11 maximum throughput?
by Guest PaulH- 0 replies

I have an application that sends 200 byte frames at 50 frames per second for 10 seconds to an 802.11 client. If I use a Windows LAN sniffer (Wireshark) to sniff the wire, I can see all 500 frames go out and 500 responses return. However, if I use a Windows 802.11 sniffer (like Wildpackets Omnipeek or Wireshark with the CaceTech 802.11 adapter) I will only see 450-480 frames and about the same number of responses. I've used 3 802.11 adapters with the same results. Sniffing 802.11 with Wireshark under Linux, however, I can see all 500 frames and responses. In my application, if I reduce the packet size to 10 bytes or reduce the frames per second to 10, I ca…
