XP Not Detecting Internet Connection
by Guest Link- 5 replies

I recently switched from Linux Ubuntu 7.04 to Windows XP on my Desktop computer. I believe my motherboard has a built in network thing, that aligns with the back of my computer. My internet (directed through a router) worked fine on Linux, and prior to that fine on Windows XP. However, now I go to Network Connections and there are no connections. I have tried all my re/installing all my drivers, powering down, reconnecting the mobo, and re/installing Windows XP numerous times. I would be led to assume it was my mobo, however, it worked fine half an hour prior to installing Windows XP on Ubuntu and nothing happened to the computer in that time.

Parenting issue.

I have just supplied my 13yo with a you-beaut XP with a good graphics card, and the lad is having a great time, his games are whizz bang and chatting on Messenger is intoxicating. Me, on Win98 have been consuming about 5mb a day on ADSL, now the child from hell is racking up around 100Mb a day. Now the initial terror has subsided, can anyone suggest a reasonable download quota, for a child of this age? I need to build my Phone budget scheme around dowload expectations. He is a good kid really, does not game on line, and will curtail his music downloads. If I say sign up for 1Gb per month, is that reasonable for adequate usage? Does chatting (with sm…

No Need to Reboot - Really?
by Guest Bob- 3 replies
Since Windows 2000 was released, and even more so with Windows XP, it seems like I am prompted less and less to reboot after installing new software. IIRC I can install .NET Framework, MS Office, and many others - with no prompt to reboot after the installation process is completed. Why is this? I tend to reboot anyway just because I got in the habit of it so long ago. Is is *really* unnecessary to reboot - with absolutely no benefit to be realized from rebooting after installing new software? Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks!

CD-Roms/DVD-ROMs not showing DATA CD's recorded with other softwar
by Guest Jonathan- 0 replies
Hi, after a recent round of WSUS updates, users are reporting that their CD/DVD drives won't show the contents of data CD's made with apps like Nero. If I create a CD using windows drag and drop it can see the files fine on the burnt CD. If iuse a proper commercial CD, like Office, it can read that too. Just homemade Data CD's do not display any content and show as being empty, despite using some of the CD space. I've been through the KB, tried various ASPI, UDF readers etc but to no avail, changed the DMA settings etc. Anyone got any ideas as to how I can get back to being able to view previously made CD-ROMs... Regards Jonathan

Router's web interface
by Guest dunnoaname- 2 replies

Hello, I am trying to set up a static IP address and I need some help accessing my router's web interface. My router is a D-link WBR-1310 and I was able to get the d-link page by typing in http://192.168.0.1. It asked me to for my ADMIN/password. This is where I have the problem. I am not sure what they are asking me to type. I tried my computer's admin login name/password but that did not work. I am assuming it has something to do with during the setup of the router, but I am not sure how to re-access that information as I did not setup my router. Thanks for your time. If there is anything else that could help you help me let me know :). PS: Also, I was wo…

Delete folders using wildcard
by Guest Muso- 2 replies

Hi people I would like to delete folders using a wildcard from command prompt; but I see that the RD command doesn't support wildcards, and DELTREE no longer exists on WINXP. Specifically, our PC's are very short on hard drive space, and I'm claiming back some by deleting the uninstall files for Microsoft updates (the $NtUninstallxxxxx folders that live in the WINNT folder). I'm not actually uninstalling the updates, just deleting the uninstall files. If the updates cause a problem, we can always re-image that machine. Is there another command or script I can use to delete multiple folders using wildcards? Or is there a free program that can delete the $…

HELP! accidentally deleted Outlook Express folder
by Guest Erhardm- 10 replies
I accidentally deleted the Outlook Express folder that contains all my email files. I could not find the deleted folder in my recycle bin, presumably because it was larger than the recycle bin's reserved capacity. In fact the contents of my recycle bin were wiped out at the same time. Is there any way to restore the folder and all its files? Surely it is somewhere on my hard drive. Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Norton Speed Disk Hang !
by Guest penang@catholic.org- 11 replies

Recently I had a disk crash. So I changed a new disk, re-installed my XP, got all the updates online, and then I went and bought the Norton Systemworks 2007. Installed it, got all the "liveupdate" that I need, and launch the thing. I have been a user of Norton Utilities ever since the DOS era, and have been a very satisfied customer, especially for Norton's Speed Disk utility. However, this time the darn thing just hang ! Yep, it went and did "defrag" for 4% and then stayed there. Nothing. I checked with the Task Manager (the ctrl-alt-del thingy on XP), I was told that SD was still "running". So I left the thing to "run", and boy did it "run" >From S…
