Screen Saver not using password
by Guest Rich B- 0 replies
After a recent clean install of Win XP home, I am trying to set a password for the screen saver. I get the option of "on resume, password protect", but when the screen saver activates, a mouse-move will bring the desktop back - without a password or log-on prompt. There is only 1 user, and I use a password to logon. The windows key & L works to lock the system, but the screen saver won't. What am I doing wrong? I apologize in advance if I missed the answer in hunting thru the other posts. Thanks, Richard.

Shortcut: R-click menu has no "Properties" selection
by Guest Thomas G. Marshall- 3 replies

When I installed an ancient kids game (for win 3.1.1 / 95) it installed properly, and works, but I cannot get properties from the start menu shortcut. It's just not there, and it *is* a shortcut. Is there something I can do to do this, perhaps with one of the windows resource kit tools? I want to set the shortcut to the .exe to run in win95 compatibility mode, and in 640x480. The compatibility mode for this particular game is not that important it seems (this is a lucky one that runs as is), but I would like it in lower res because all it displayes is 640x480 graphics. Thanks! -- Onedoctortoanother:"Ifthisismyrectalthermometer, wherethehell'smyp…

blank screen and blinking
by Guest jay- 8 replies

Hi, This is the first time I am using a forum to try to fix my XP problem. I was running a DVD when the picture froze. I close the DVD, restarted the DVD by popping it in and out. The movie was good for 10 minutes and it froze again. This time I could shut it down. I finally did a hard shut down. After that, I removed my DVD and try restarting. I gave me a blank screen with a blinking cursor. My keyboard, mouse can't control anything. I tried to use my recovery disc and the PC is not reading it. What's happening. How can I fix this? Help Jay

javaw.exe - info needed
by Guest PT- 6 replies
I note that during long boot-ups of WinXP home, the Task Manager shows that the delay is caused by a long running javaw.exe. Browsing the Web, I find that this is a common complaint. But I can't find a definitive answer to these questions: 1. What does javaw.exe do? 2. What would be the likely downside to removing or temporarily renaming it? 3. Would step 2 result in better boot-up time and/or performance? -- PT

Also they have 2 sites 1 in chicago, Illinois and another in Phoenix, AR can we somehow connect two sites simutanously where it is not getting to expensive? Mostly appreciate your thoughts since we are now 2 different sites with different information as well this is for…

How do I rename a windows xp pro home network domain? Have two computers that can not see one another because of this. For some reason, when installing xp on one, I called it something other than the default. Called it MSHOME. So I have one that is called MSHOME and one called WORKGROUP. I can not seem to figure out how to rename one so that I can fileshare across a home network via a router. Any help here please? Also, does it really matter what the name is as long as it matches? Thanks much for your help.

Hi I am looking for some sort of application that can allow me to change title in id tags mp3 files (80 mp3 files). These are audio books files, I just recorded them. I am hoping that I can find some sort of program which allows to add id tags -- say I had chapters' title 01 - 80 in .txt files and program reads it and change them in same order 01.mp3 to 80.mp3. Thanks in advance

Can I delete media control devices safely?
by Guest David D- 0 replies

Have a midi problem with a new audio card I purchased - it does not work with my midi piano. I recently discovered (after testing my midi piano on another computer) that I must have a conflict or something with my new midi card & winxp. * I tested my midi piano works on another older computer, so I eliminated both the cable and the piano as a suspect in this problem. I am trying to clear/uninstall all of the Creative SoundBlaster audio drivers and files (that came with the new sound card) and the SoundMax files/drivers (that came with the onboard audio motherboard) so I can start fresh with this new audio card ** Please note that the onboard audio d…
