XP SP 2 and cd rom problems
by Guest Bob- 1 reply

Since downloading SP 2, I have had problems with my d drive (cd rom). I'm logged in as the administrator, but when I try to save an Excel or Word doc to the d drive, it tells me I do not have access to the d drive and to contact the administrator....which is me and how I am logged in. Also, I have cds with home files on them that my computer no longer picks up. I checked the cd driver and that is running fine. I put a third party disc in, my computer read that and opened it, so the issue seems to be limited to my personal documents. Things were fine before SP 2, but I needed Media Plyr 11 and apparently that requires SP 2. Otherwise I would just rem…

Re: Linux Just Sucks.. No Wonder So Few Are Using It. Stephan Will Autodesk Architecture and Revit Architecture work on Linux or Ubuntu? Those are the two programs I make my living with and Autodesk does not support Linux. Do any of the popular FPS games like Ghost Recon, Halo, Splinter Cell, or any of the top flight simulator games work on Linux or Ubuntu? When I am not working those are the programs I like to play with. I am asking because I genuinely want to know why I should ever consider Linux. Most of the software offerings for Linux are pretty lame. I know because I have friends that run Linux/Ubuntu and while there are people trying to develop CAD pro…

Service Pack installation to an OFF-line computer
by Guest Tacklinez- 1 reply

I need to install Service Pack 1 (or 2) to my Fiance's computer (which does not have Internet Access). I downloaded SP 1 to my computer, copied it to disk and loaded that to her machine. When I ran the file, I got the message "The Expected Version of the Product was not found on Your System." Note: I am running Windows XP Home Edition, and her's is XP Professional. This is classic Catch-22 - I need the SP to get her computer On-line, but I can't get her On-line till I load the SP....... (sigh) Thank you for your help and advice.

DVD suddenly PIO (no DMA)
by Guest Lars-Erik Østerud- 5 replies

Suddenly my Plextor 716A got terrible problems and slow writing. After some checking a saw that the max DMA mode (in Hardware control panel) is PIO and not DMA, even if "DMA if available" is set ON. And I cannot change it. DMA is on in BIOS and max DMA is detected right in BIOS. What can cause this? How do I fix this in WinXP? -- Lars-Erik - http://www.osterud.name - ICQ 7297605

Windows Explorer is not reading desktop.ini
by Guest Dave- 0 replies

I'm running WinXP Pro and save all my data on my D: drive, including a folder with my favorite icons. In the past I've changed a large number of folder icons in my D: drive by copying the desktop.ini from one folder into the rest of the folders. The next time I brought up Windows Explorer, these changed icons appeared correctly in Windows Explorer. Recently I had to reinstall my operating system because of a virus that infected all the executable files on both drives. I restored several folder directories on my D: drive from backups. These backups included the original desktop.ini files with the changed icons, but now Windows Explorer will no longer read …

Incorrect network notification icon
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 0 replies

Hi, I have an issue which wasn't solved so i post again. Before upgrading XP SP2 from Win2K Pro Sp4 there wasn't any problem like that with the same hardware config and drivers. But now that drives me crazy: If i logon XP without entering password (auto-logon), always my network cable seems "unplugged", it's not true because i can surf the net "fine." Or if the login process is very fast ("welcome" screen is shown for a few seconds or less), i got "network" cable unplugged notification icon problem. I set up my network properly and both LEDs are lighting up properly (NIC and router). Shortly, although i see "network cable unplugged" i have no problem surfin…

registry revert
by Guest Keith.Van.Wetter@gmail.com- 2 replies

1) I have the same problem, although System Restore is off. I have Docs&Settings on a second hard drive, and used RegCrawler to change the drive letter. I then verify everything in Regedit (ex: search for any entries of C:\Documents and Settings, and if needed, change drive letter to D:\). However, upon reboot, though I have admin rights, the settings revert to the previous! 2) Incidentally, I have been told that it is possible during XP installation to actually choose to which drive one wishes to install Docs&Settings, and yet I have never been able to find the screen that shows this option! Has anybody seen this mysterious option? 3) How does one …

Hope someone can help out here. I re-installed MSN Live messenger V8.1 in order to fix some minor problems.. Now I got a problem. I can run Live Messenger in the admin account.. However, for another user account, the program just hangs. I can see the msnmsg.exe in the process tab of Task Manager for this user but program won't run.. I have deleted some MSN folder/files from this user account before I reinstalled WLM and not sure is this what created the problem.. Any suggestion on how to fiox this ? Thanks
