windows explorer

I still like using Windows Explorer as the main list of folders. I finally updated to IE7 begrudgingly and now the cursor does not stay active from the left panel to the right and back again. In other words, to have the cursor active, I now have to click somewhere in, say, the right panel to use the scroll wheel, then to scroll in the left panel, I cannot just move the cursor over the left panel, I have to also click something in the left panel. I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology but with IE6, the cursor could be brought from left to right and back again and wherever it was, that side would be active. Seems like a little thing, but so annoyi…

Re: Linux Just Sucks.. No Wonder So Few Are Using It. "Rick" wrote [..] > "You really do need to go take troll lessons." (in one post) (and in another) > "Why are you that stupid.. or dishonest?" You seem to specialize in pre high school one line put-downs. But, do you actually have any cogent arguments FOR Linux? Just wondering . . .

Computer Freezes with ScreenSaver
by Guest gbfanmn- 1 reply

In the last few weeks, our home PC with Windows XP often freezes when left for longer periods of time, say several hours or overnight. The screensaver is active, but I doubt that's really the problem as we've used this for a long time. Not sure where to start with this one, anyone have any good ideas?

USB socket problem. Devices not recognised.
by Guest Mike Arnold- 1 reply

Is this the right place to ask for help on this issue? I’m using WinXP SP2. When I connect a new plug and play device to a USB socket I get the warning “Found new hardware. A problem occurred hardware installation. Your new hardware may not work properly”. And indeed it doesn’t work. Specifically this has occurred when attaching a new Logitech web-cam and now when connecting an Epson scanner (Perfection V350 photo). This problem does NOT arise when these attachments are to my laptop; everything then works OK. So it appears there’s nothing wrong with the hard ware nor its associated software. Other devices such as the mouse and keyboard which are also…

I have installed ms office 2007. When I tried it, it was fine. But today when I use it again, it has gone loco. When I type anything at ms word, what I type doesn't show up. It always says "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked." and also with the other ms office programs. When I try reinstalling it, it says "Setup cannot continue because a required file is corrupted or not available. Run setup again from the original source disc or download location." Before when stating windows installer shows up and saying windows is configuring microsoft office 2007, but it now it ain't. Note:I accidentally deleted its cache. Any help …

which ipc system do i use on windows?
by Guest Frank- 2 replies

This is a development question, but I don't know where else to put this, so here goes.... I basically want to register my program as a listener for changes in the network configuration. I could poll for the change I want to observe (say by searching the output of ipconfig every 5 seconds), but listening for an event generated by the source of the change would be more efficient. This is usually provided by an IPC subsystem of the OS (examples linux/unix would be dbus, dcop or ice) does such a subsystem exist on Windows? If so, what is its name so I can look up more info on it? Thankyou, Frank

Re: DVD suddenly PIO (no DMA) Didn't get it work with only deleting those keys MasterIdDataChecksum SlaveIdDataChecksum" Had to delete these too to make it set mode right: MasterDeviceTimingMode MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed MasterDeviceType UserMasterDeviceType SlaveDeviceTimingMode SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed SlaveDeviceType UserSlaveDeviceType Then I had to set my user overrides again (disable auto-detect on non-existing channels). Non a must, but I usually do that :-) -- Lars-Erik - http://www.osterud.name - ICQ 7297605

These Linux nutcases get stranger by the day. This one tops the list! http://tinyurl.com/38e9u8 http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.advocacy/msg/5aa9bbd2a2ac3bf2?hl=en& http://groups.google.com/group/24hoursupport.helpdesk/msg/58ff4550dccedfb3?hl=en& http://groups.google.com/group/24hoursupport.helpdesk/msg/de0dbfe7ce049fa2?hl=en& Why would anyone take such a drastic step just to protest DRM and Microsoft's domination of the market? Seems a little extreme to me.

by Guest Robert- 1 reply

I have a peculiar problem. On start up everything looks ok and my browser and email work well but whenever I try an open a different program such as Excel the splash screen appears announcing it and then it sticks, same with other unrelated programs. Norton says there is no virus but Prevx 2.00 seems to go wrong at this point and not respond. Any ideas please?

Windows XP Outlook Express Message Rules Specific Words
by Guest TeeVee- 2 replies

When I use Outlook Express message rules for the Subject line containing the specific word 'Read:' , and action 'move to the Read folder', this rule takes no action. However, another specfic word in the Subject line list, 'Read' works fine. The only difference is one of the words ends with a colon and the other does not. It seems that Outlook Express message rules cannot handle a "specific word" in the subject line that ends in a colon. Is this true ?
