XP Home SP2 hangs during restart, but not reboot
by Guest Gregg Cattanach- 0 replies

It seems whenever I use the 'Restart' option to reboot, my desktop system hangs up during the reboot, always during the screen with the WindowsXP splash screen and the little blue dots that scroll from left to right. However, when I then reboot by pushing the reboot pencil switch on the front of the desktop, everything comes up fine, even when I select 'Start Windows Normally', (instead of 'Last good configuration'). Any ideas what's going on here? I thought I might have a bad sector that's only accessed by some system driver during reboot, but then the Start Normally shouldn't work. If it is a bad sector, is there some utility I can run to check for…

mplayer2 and Remote Wonder
by Guest George Valkov- 0 replies

Remote Wonder 2 seems to work now in mplayer2.exe (the old Windows Media Player). Thanks Microsoft! Someone may ask why I use the old mplayer2? Well, it starts instantly and is almost the ideal tool for previewing rendered audio and video video materials after authoring. It would be the ideal if I could use "left arrow" and "right arrow" to skip back and forward 10 seconds. I wonder if the source code of that player is available somewhere on the net... <-- Sounds too good to be a true ;-) I'm curious if this came as a Windows Update or if it came as a feature of some new ffdshow codec weekly build? Cheers!

XP backup
by Guest Terry- 0 replies

I have never used it. I just installed XP on a new computer and have it set up like I am used to it like switching the look back to Classic. If I do accessories/tools/backup and chose "my documents and settings" can I assume that it saves all program information. I know it does not save the actual program, but does it save settings I have made to change the program defaults? On my computer I have only one user and a guest. What if I want to restore this backup on another XP machine? Can I just install the backup and have my username added to the users on the computer? If a hard drive crashes and I reinstall XP, can I add the backup file first thing.…

DVD-RW drive only recognized by XP as a CD drive
by Guest Jim Helfer- 16 replies

I just have a user a new PC which I had performed a "Repair" install of XP SP2 (because of a change of motherboard). The machine has a Lite-On DVD RW drive, but XP is not recognizing it as a proper writeable drive. I can't open the CD folder to add files to it, or use send to to add files to it. Basically all the built-in CD burning functionality is missing from XP, and I'm not sure how to get it back. I have installed a OEM-Nero Express suite, and that functions properly, so I am confident that the drive is good. Windows just doesn't seem to recognize the drive as a writeable drive. Any suggestions apreciated. -- Jim Helfer Computer S…

Dear University of Manchester Admissions, I am currently a student taking up space at Whats-a-Matta-U University located in Nervous Sheep Scotland. I am considering continuing my studies by entering a doctoral program at Manchester University leading to a PHD degree in Internet Based Linux Trolling. I understand that you have an intensive program at Manchester which is targeted directly at my field of choice. If I can be Frank for a moment, I'll reveal that I am interested in a program which puts as little demand upon my free time as possible. I understand you have a student registered in the Internet Based Linux Trolling program who goes by them nam…
