Power Schemes and 'Out of Range' monitor message
by Guest Big Al @ RHS- 4 replies

Hoping someone has a bright idea on this one. The school has recently updated the computers in one of its suites with HP DC5800 SFF desktops (running XP SP3) with existing 15" Di-Fusion LCD monitors. In Control Panel -> Power Options -> Power Schemes, the 'Turn off monitor' option is set to 20 minutes. When the monitor has been switched off after that time and the mouse is moved or a key is pressed, the monitor displays the message "Attention. Input signal is out of range. Please change signal timing." The only way to restore the display is either disconnect and reconnect the power cable on the monitor or reboot the computer. But here's th…

External drives not installing or working properly on USB
by Guest Simon- 4 replies

I have a graphics workstation based around an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard with quad core processor and 3GB RAM. USB host controllers are Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family). Only one of the five host controllers is connected to the 6 external ports. This is listed as a USB2 enhanced host controller. I am experiencing problems with a Sandisk ImageMate 12 in 1 card reader modelSDDR-89 V4 and a Western Digital 2TB external mirror raid drive, both USB2 peripherals. Both were bought at the same time and shortly after I had installed XP SP3. Plug and play installation of the WD drive went through most of the automated process before indicating that the drevice had not…

Data Execution Prevention when scanning AVI files in explorer
by Guest eljainc- 1 reply

Hello, I have a WinXP notebook running XP Home SP2. There is a folder of AVI files which causes me problems. When scanning/viewing these AVI files, I often get the following error message popup: Data Execution Prevention To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this application. These AVI files were encoded with DIVX (version 6.1). I have tried changing the swtich in BOOT.INI from /noexecute=OptIn to /noexecute=AlwaysOff This turns off DEP, but I still get exception errors. I have since left DEP on. What causes this problem with AVI files? What is the fix for this? Thanks Mike

Stuck with a random errror message and would appreciate any help/ advice. The error is as follows:- STOP 0x000000f4 (0x00000003,0x89b179e0,0x89b17b54,0x805d2970) I have an acer aspire 5101 laptop. The error occurs randomly and would not appear to be linked to any particular activity. Immediately after, it loads up fine and can work for a few days or as little as a few minutes before doing it again. I have used memory diagnostics (memtest86 & windows memory diagnostic test) which initially detected a whole host of errors which i fixed with a bios update. I have changed the processor, the RAM and the hard drive. The hard drive has been tested with the s…

XP 64Bit.
by Guest MJ- 4 replies

Good day to all. I just found my Windows XP 64-bit DVD. I'm considering dumping my 32-bit and re-installing. Question(s): 1) Will my programs run under it? I realize it's an open ended question, but most of my apps are of the MS variety, some ASP code generators, video editing, Visual Studio 6 and 2K5 as well as Adobe types, 2) Is the activation process the same? In other words; install, configure make sure all hardware is stable then activate? 3) What is the support cycle like? By this I mean I understand that 2K is dead, XP is soon to be. By XP does MS mean all flavors of XP or just the 32 bit? 4) If I run into problems and re-install my 32-Bi…

Script to run at BOOTUP not startup(login)
by Guest tdmailbox@yahoo.com- 5 replies

I have a batch file that I want to run at bootup rather then startup. I know I can make it into a service but I dont want to go through all that. It is a simple one line batch file that just resets a drive that connects to my computer. I have it in in the startup folder now but it waits for me to login and then runs. Any way to get this to run when I fire up the PC?

Can't connect to tunnelled remote desktop
by Guest Robert S- 3 replies

This might not be a "pure" windows question, but here goes . . . I'm trying to set up a tunneled connection to a remote XP Pro computer using openssh. The method is outlined here: http://www.blisstonia.com/eolson/notes/smboverssh.php (using port 3389 instead of 139). Essentially I've created a MS Loopback Adaptor with the addres 10.0.0.1 and I've tunnelled port 3389 to this (using the freeware program PuTTY). I then open Remote Desktop with the address 10.0.0.1. It works on several of my PCs with no problem, but one machine refuses to connect and gives the message "The client could not connect. You are already connected to the console of this compu…
