Hello, Using XP SP2 with only one user account member of "Administrator". So, I'm admin and i'm using XP in "auto-login" mode, without needing to enter password. After i put my Windows into hibernation mode, then i press chassis power button to resume, the progress bar advances, at the end of resuming progress bar, i get full black screen with no notification. The optical mouse wasn't recognized. But if i uncheck Power Options -> Advanced tab -> "prompt for a password when the computer resumes from hibernate" the problem goes away and the desktop comes immediately. If not, the desktop does not come and i get a constant black screen at the end of hiberna…

Hi, I have had some issues with a PC logging staright off after login on. Massive amounts or virus and addware going on! I have (thanks to other threads) managed to change the registry for winlogon to explorer.exe from userinit.exe so at least I can boot up. On investigation userinit.exe is missing! Is it ok to straight copy back from CD or another PC so I can change the registery back? As although I can logon the PC most apps aren't working correctly. Cheers

stop laptop suspending when battery gets low
by Guest Andy Fish- 8 replies

Hi, I have a sony TR5 laptop which is about 3 years old now. Although the battery will last a good 2 hours, the battery meter drops to 0% after about 1/2 that time. That's not a problem in itself - I've seen it on other laptops before. I simply went on to the "alarms" section of the power control panel and made sure that it didn't hibernate when the battery level goes below 3%. I have to suffer the occasional unexpected shutdown when the battery actually runs out but I can live with that. That was fine until I reinstalled windows XP and now the PC always hibernates when it thinks the battery is low i.e. after an hour, regardless of how I configure…

I somehow got infected with this browser hijacker/malware nightmare. I read a bunch of what seems to be too complicated for my skill level fixes. Is there a program out there that will get rid of it? I've tried Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, as well as Bazooka and the antispyware program that comes with the Road Runner supplied security suite, and no good, Thanks for any info, Todd McD

USB memory and autoplay
by Guest Stephen- 0 replies

I have a USB memory stick (Kingston DataTraveler 1GB) that I use for moving files between my work and home computers. At work I run Windows XP Professional and at home Windows XP Home, both kept up-to-date with updates. Ideally, when I plug it into either computer I want nothing to happen - I will run my file synchronization program when I am ready. This is what happens at work. However, at home plugging it in sometimes causes My Computer to open. I have tried to disable all autoplay by right-clicking on the drive in My Computer, selecting Properties and on the Autoplay tab selecting Take no action. Several times when My Computer opened unexpectedly, I …
