clean installation problems
by Guest Pamela G- 4 replies

I finally got my bios to recognise the new HD by disabling the Promise drivers and making sure the SATA drivers were loaded. I am trying to load Windows XP on it as a clean install. But I am running into a bunch of errors that stop the installation and cannot find them discussed in the MS knowledgebase. I have both an OEM version of XP Pro, and aftermarket XP home and Pro. I have tried using both, with similar problems. It would make more sense if I got the same error message each time, but no! Ideas please? With the OEM disc: 1st try: File pci.sys is corrupted 2nd try:File intelide.sys is corrupted 3rd try: File \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. …

Desktop theme - icon back color settings
by Guest WinXP-pro- 3 replies

Once upon a time my desktop icons had no color background for names so the text appeared to be floating on the wallpaper, rather than on a solid color (Appearance/advanced/icon - both item and font color were grayed out) I only want a color back for selected items. Is there a reg key that will reset it? Thanks

Icon Problems
by Guest Kieron Capehorn- 1 reply

The file types of media files on my PC have got mixed up. Most media files on my PC now have the Winamp filetype as their icon in Windows Explorer, even though they do not open in Winamp when you double click on them by default. In addition, in the 'File Type' section of Explorer, all of these files are listed as 'Winamp Media File', even though they are associated with other programs, such as WMP9 and flvPlayer. How can I put this right? Thanks

How to Print a .gif file From a Batch File
by Guest Steve Behman- 7 replies
I have a .gif file which, when "dragged", to a printer prints correctly as an image. When I attempt to get the same result from a batch file using: "print /d:printername file." I get garbage output. When I omit the printer name argument I get a dialog asking several irrelevant things. What I want to do is accomplish the same result as the drag-and-drop operation did in a batch file (i.e. the correct printing of the .gif file as the image it represents).

Can ping default gateway but cannot access internet
by Guest Anosh- 3 replies

Hi, I'm stumped by a networking issue I'm hoping someone can help with. I have a Windows XP Pro (SP2) computer connected to the internet via a D- Link 524 Wireless router and a cable modem connection. I also have a VoIP phone adaptor connected to the same router. Here's the problem. For some reason the VoIP phone adaptor connects to the internet just fine, however the computer does not. The router's address is 192.168.0.1 The computer gets an IP of 192.168.0.100 (assigned by DHCP). I have verified that the computer's default gateway is set to 192.168.0.1. If I ping yahoo.com, it resolves the correct address 206.190.60.37 but is unable to ping yahoo.com …

Lost access to "welcome screen" and "switch user" features
by Guest Re-enable Welcome Screen & Switch User- 4 replies
- 236 views
With help from a Dell telephone tech, I repaired my system with the OS CD, safe mode, and running chkdsk/r after a power failure. But now when I turn the computer on, I do not get the Welcome Screen; instead I get a box into which I must type the user name and password. I called Dell again , and they looked at various items that I do not understand, but they have no idea about a solution except to wipe the hard disk and reinstall everything. To switch users, I have to log off entirely and use the box, which is annoying since the first user must reload everything. When I try "switch user" from the start tab or from the task manager, I get the sign-i…

Does XP need another patch for this??
by Guest Paul- 4 replies

Hi all, I'm not too sure if Avast (ashserv.exe) , is causing this prob, but it happens sometimes, when I open some folders in my computer (XP x32 SP3). The error in event viewer is the same as this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891608 However, as above, I'm not using the OS's on this site The above site points to this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841356/ Which obviously I dont need (and it probably wont work) since its only for SP1. I'm also getting this error Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. I see Uphclea…

Cannot change display settings on Win2003Srv
by Guest Ton Hamil- 7 replies

Power (230V) down during a thunderstorm. 2003 server machines power supply damaged. Rreplaced it and rebooted machine (first time in >3 years). Noticed that display settings were down to SVGA (800 x 600) and could not bee changed. Replaced video card (same model) and rebooted. No success. Settings dialog will accept moving the slider to a higher res (e.g. 1024 x 768) but the screen stays att 800 x 600. Same thing with screen saver and energy saving options. Dialogs accepts new option but no change in machine behavior. When coming back to dialog the previous values/options are still there?!? Other than this 2003 server works like before. Up time is …

Replacing C: Drive - Again
by Guest Dave- 17 replies
Two weeks ago I posted a question about how to replace my C: drive with a larger one. I got many good replies (thank you), one of which was to go to the mfg's website and download cloning software. Since I wanted to install a Western Digital (which I already have, and have been using it for external storage), I went to the WD website and downloaded their Data Lifeguard Tools. After unzipping and reading the tutorial/info, I'm not sure this is what I want. It never uses the word 'clone', the nearest thing is 'Drive-to-Drive Data Copy' It would seem I need to do a little more than just 'copy' my current C: drive onto another HD. Am I missing somethin…

Unable to install XP Pro - BlueScreen! 1 2
by Guest Doonie- 28 replies

Hello I need to reinstall my OS so I removed the HD from my fairly new HP Pavilion and attached it my notebook via an external USB enclosure. I then combined several existing partitions using Norton Partition Magic. Tested for surface errors, unhid the drive, formatted it and reinstalled it in the Pavilion. Using an original XP disk, no SP I attempted to install the OS. Just after all drivers, etc are loaded the screen turns blue with a halt error specifying pci.sys. I have removed every PCI component including memory and tried again with the same results. I am looking for instructions for 2 things. First to solve the problem, can I remove the HD, at…

I have a Dell Dimension with on-board NIC. I was having network problems and added a new Linksys 10/100 NIC. All of a sudden I started getting the Windows error screen indicating the system had recovered from an error. When I click to find out more about the error I get a screen that tells me the problem was caused by a 10/100 Ethernet Adapter (an983.sys) by Infineon - AMDTek. I have two choices: - Run Windows Update - Fo to Infineon - AMDTek web site and up drivers I've done both, Windows Update finds nothing. I went to Infineon website and downloaded AN983 drivers and ran Update Drives from Device Mgr on Linksys card since that is the one I just insta…
