Command or setting to force monitor on?
by Guest Harko- 16 replies

Hi all, I have two scheduled tasks: One to have wizmo force the computer to standby at 10 pm, the other to start Internet Explorer at 6:15 am to wake the computer from standby. Both tasks work fine, but upon wakeup, the monitor doesn't turn on. I have to move the mouse to wake up the monitor. This isn't really a problem at all obviously as I have to move the mouse anyway; more of a discussion point/loose end to tie up: Is there something to run at the command line to force the monitor to turn on? That way I could put the IE startup and the monitor wakeup command in a batch file and run that instead at 6:15. If not, is there some setting somewhere…

Hi, My computer (with WindowsXP) was accidentally restored. A FPGA simulation software Modelsim PE 6.2c student version, which is obsolete now, cannot removed. It is not shown in Control panel. There is no uninstall function either. The same version cannot be found because it is substitute with the newer version. Could you tell me how to remove this obsolete software? Thanks a lot.

handle of child window with input focus
by Guest Bob- 1 reply

There's a Windows API function that provides various information about top-level windows, but I can't remember its name. I think the first parameter is the HWND of a top-level window, and it fills in a control block structure in return. One of the values it makes available in the control block is the window handle of the child window that has the input focus. Hopefully that's enough info so someone will think of the name of the function and post it for me :) Thanks, Bob

SP3 Installation Error
by Guest RAH- 3 replies
I have been attempting to install SP3 on a Dell 4550 with XP Pro SP2 installed. I have already installed it on two other computers without any problem. I tried it first with the downloaded file, and get an access error. It then uninstalled the attempt. I next tried to use Windows Update. That one failed also. The log showed the error code to be 0x8024402C. This machine successfully updated nine critical updates on August 14th. It just doesn't like the SP3 update for some reason. All three machines run Norton Internet Security, and Webroot Spy Sweeper for MSN. Dick

I have a Compaq Presario that has been extremely slow lately and often gives me the program not responding can anyone help as to where I should begin? I notice that the problems happen most often when I have Microsoft Outlook express open. The primary usage for this computer is web surfing and my children are constantly playing games on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this is very general information to start with but I can always elaborate more with answers once I know what the questions are!! Thank you in advance Chris

Access Denied
by Guest Bruce.- 13 replies

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for this. I have two computers networked together. One can access the resources of the other, but not the reverse. Basically this: USER1 on PC1 does a "net view \\PC2" and it works. USER2 on PC2 does a "net view \\PC1" and gets: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. PC2 can "net view" 2 other computers, just not PC1. Both PC1 and PC2 are is XP Pro SP3 Both have Simple File Sharing enabled. PC1 has both USER1 and USER2 configured and declared as Administrators. Any ideas? Bruce.

file sharing broken on 1 of 4 networked computers
by Guest dandc01- 3 replies

I have 4 computers in a peer to peer network in a small office, all running XP Pro, including the "server". the default "shared documents" is set for file sharing on all 4 machines. For some reason, one of the machines "frontdesk" cannot access some but not all of the folders open to sharing on the "server". The other two machines have unrestricted access and "Frontdesk" can access shared folders on the other two machines without trouble. In what may be a related problem, the printer on Frontdesk is also not accessible via network sharing to the other computers. any suggestions?

OT - Ghost 2003 "Read Sector Failure"
by Guest Gruff the Elder- 11 replies

Double sorry. The web interface fooled me into first posting this in the Media Center Edition newgroup. I know this isn't XP or even MS, but Symantec is next to useless, especially for an 5-year-old product, and there is very little traffic in the symantec.support. ... newsgroup. I know there are Ghost 2003 users who hang out here, so here's hoping ... I had been happily using Ghost 2003 on XP Pro sp3 to make images to a partition on a secondary internal drive. I bought a WD 500 GB USB external drive. It works fine with other apps, including Acronis TI. But Ghost 2003 crashes immediately after starting PC-DOS with Error Number 29004 "Read sector…

not seeing second hard drive
by Guest franko- 2 replies

My daughters old Dell 8200 desktop quit - we dont know what happened but we suspect she left it on during a thunderstorm and perhaps there was a tremendous jolt that the surge protector couldn't handle - not sure though. The original symptom was 'it's dead' - no fan, no hum, no beep, no led, no boot to bios, nothing at all...dead. My suspicion was the psuu so i connected a known good one which provided power to the mb (fan worked but still no beeps, no booting, no anything). So then I reseated all the cards and all the memory sticks. Nothing. I exchanged the display card. Nothing.Removed the heatsink and reseated the cpu . Nothing. We accepted that the compu…

Excel File Extension Problem
by Guest Albert- 3 replies

Hello! I have on my computer Excel 2003 AND Excel 2007. I need to have them both because I'm a developer and I like to try my programs on both versions. However, I prefer to use Excel 2003 as the default option. Since a few days ago, when I open an XLS file from a shortcut outside Excel, it opens the files in Excel 2007. I went to the file manager options to set the default application for .XLS files to be Excel 2003, but I now get a message saying "___.xls is not a valid win32 application" when I click on the shortcut. I can still access the files from within Excel 2003, but its kind of annoying that my shortcuts will only work for Excel 2007. Any tips?…

Multiple setting don't stick after a reboot
by Guest jtpryan- 2 replies
I have been noticing over the past few weeks that many settings I have go away after a reboot. For example, I have the quick link toolbar turned on and ordered a certain way, After reboot it's gone and when I turn it back on, it is ordered in the default, although shortcuts I added to it are there. I just bought a new 22" monitor with a resolution of 1600 x 1050. All is fine, then I reboot and the fonts are odd and the highest resolution available to me is 1600 x 900. If I reload the driver and reboot, it fixes it. It's almost as though things are not being written to the registry. Ideas? -Jim

by Guest Neil- 1 reply

Hi: I am running XP on an XP DeskStation P4 which auto updated tonight. When turned on the xp login password was initially not recognized with several restarts required. On first succesful restart it appears that the system is running on an old IBM preload NTFS partition and not on the old second preload partition. Restore point to last pre-auto update did nothing. How do I restore to the second partition? Neil
